Venus Williams withdraws from Australian Open due to injury

Shame for her, but she needs to retire IMO.

She has nothing left to prove, and honestly, she is a zero factor now in the sport as far as title contention goes. A 1st/2nd round attraction.

I understand she loves the game, and can play as long as she wants, but I also think she is a bit delusional here in not wanting to face up to reality...Heck her younger sister is done and retired.

I got a kick when a British commentator said yesterday during a match:

"Serena evolved away from the sport."
WTH?
Why not just say "Serena retired"???

It was a she.
You seem to know Serena said it.
Do you remember where/when?
Fair enough - yes, in the Vogue article where she announced her decision, she said "Maybe the best word to describe what I'm up to is evolution. I'm here to tell you that I'm evolving away from tennis, toward other things that are important to me." - it was very widely reported

It is what it is, when you get older you have more injuries and you take longer to recover. You can always try your best and see how you go though and the pro tour is a grind where even the younger players struggle.

She's a 5x Wimbledon champ. I think she should play Wimbledon and then retire, or at most play the US Open as well as a proper goodbye tour. I had a feeling V&S may want to play doubles at the 2024 Olympics but isn't selection the year prior? They'd probably have to play a full doubles schedule this year to qualify.

I do hope she gives it all she has at Wimby and USO (in both singles and either dubz or mixed dubz) and has a proper sendoff at the USO :D I'm gonna miss Venus so much.

Her and Reilly would be a fairly formidable team and he might want to do it to beat the (in his mind) "worthless doubles players"

Good. It's about time she faced the facts and retired.

I've said this for some time; she can love the game, but her history and competitive nature keeps her in a similar position to someone trying to climb a mountain wearing oil-slicked sandals. She is never going to have a Jimmy Connors/USO '91-type run at any major, and what were once supreme advantages over other players are just average play that will not magically defeat current opponents.

It’s nonsense celebrity language. Like when Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow divorced and called it a “conscious uncoupling.”

Let it be known, that with very few exceptions, I don't want to see any more threads announcing players retiring from the upcoming Australian Open.
I can't stand them anymore.
