Video Camera Sony HDR-SR11 ??

I figured this would be a decent place to ask this since this is where
so many people post their videos.

Anyone here use the Sony HDR-SR11 ??

I am thinking of getting this camera and was wondering how
good the video quality is when you record your tennis.

My other question would be, when you transfer these to your
computer, is it easy to convert into different video file formats?
It would be a plus if its easy to upload to youtube or something
of the sort without the video quality going to hell.

I know virtually nothing about camcorders, but want something
high quality that can record my tennis matches the whole way through
without having to touch it. Thanks!

From what I can tell this camera does have the 240 fields per second record for three seconds. However as far as I can tell it does not have manual control of the shutter speed and does not have an auto setting shutter that will freeze the motion of a tennis stroke. Sony provides conflicting information on different web sites, so if you can get your hands on the camcorder, check to see if it has manual control of the shutter speed. Most of Sony’s consumer line camcorders do not. Is there a reason you selected this camcorder?

The manual states that this camera has manual control of the shutter speed up to 1/10000 of second. It however does not say if the manual controls apply to the smooth slow motion record. That is something that should be verified. I believe Jeff from Hi Tech has used this camera so you might drop him an email.

I recorded this clip last year with the DVD505 that has not been made in a couple of years and was one of the first cameras to have the smooth slow mo record. If you freeze the clip you will see some blur and that is what happens when you can not set the shutter at a high speed.

I have not used the camera you are asking about, but most likely is the same as mine. My camera I can download videos and they are in MPEG format or I can put the DVD in my computer. I use all freeware software to edit my videos.

Record time is not as much, but should be enough to get one set before touching the recorder.

Thank you for your help Mike. One of the main reasons I was looking at this camera was because this is a joint purchase with me and my girlfriend. She wants the hard drive aspect because of not wanting to have to change tapes or dvd's when we are on our vacations. Price is still somewhat of a concern and just today I found a Canon HG10 in more of our price range thats on sale this week. The HDR-HC9 does look like an awesome camera but I can't convince her on the mini dv.

This is some of the information I found on it. Do you know if the info below means I can do the same thing you showed me with the DVD505? I know it doesn't have the 1/10000 speed but I'm hoping it means it has the slow mo feature playback you were talking about. Thanks so much for your help.

Shutter Speed (7.7)
Adjusting shutter speed is very similar to adjusting aperture. First, put the camcorder in Shutter Priority mode via the Function menu. In this mode, the aperture will be adjusted automatically to correct for exposure. The aperture and shutter speed cannot be adjusted independently. When the HG10 is in 1080/60i mode, shutter speeds include: 1/8, 1/15, 1/30, 1/60, 1/100, 1/250, 1/500, 1/1000, and 1/2000.

As far as I know Sony is the only consumer camera line that has the 240 fields per second recording that is used in the clip: http://www.hi-techtennis.com/serve/martin_serve_open.php

The Canon has manual controls to set the shutter speed. 1/2000s should be fast enough to stop motion blur for tennis. Most of Hi Tech videos are configured like this. Canon is a good option as they have nice selection of manual controls. http://www.hi-techtennis.com/ and that clip of Fed was taken with this type of setup.

Yes, I took that slow mo video with the DVD505 in Dallas. I have others of Martin, Courier, Korda and Pernfors. I was going to take some of Val and his doubles partner last weekend but he canceled do to injury at the Clay 45’s .

i use the sony hdr-cx7 which is also a good camera. supposed to have the 240 fps feature as well. around your price range. transporting it to comp is a different story.

If you want to transfer your vids to your comp, you will probably need to buy some seperate acessories, as is with all the other newer cameras these days....

If you want a much equal but much cheaper option go with the canon zr 850 mini dv camcorder. although bigger in size than sony hdr cx7, its just as good with manual shutter option. ofcourse no 240 fps or hd function
