Video of *proper* 4.0 level tennis - complete set on perfect camera with EDITING

This is not 4.0 tennis, this is 3.5 at the very best!

(Since no one has made the usual remark as of yet I felt somehow compelled to do it myself this time).

I felt disappointed that no one debated their levels. Either these guys are just too good or these forums have really fallen...

Yes me too. Probably it's too obvious that slicers and pushers peak at 3.5, even to debate.

Solid 4.0 play in the op match.

Solid effort and competing also ... which is always a big part of it (seldom discussed here). Fratboy was all in ... loved it. How long has Fratboy played? He looks like a player with great natural touch on the groundies, and if he can add drives in the mix would be very tough (also add more variety to his quality serve). When that ball sits up shallow in the court on his FH, that ball has to be hit (ditch the fh slice). Actually ... I think that is always a clear dividing line in levels. Do you take control of the point when you get a short FH, or not.

I know a player that plays similarly. If you notice he hit a few forehand drives but he's banking that his opponents have no forecourt game or aren't brave enough to take those floaty slices out of the air even if they can volley. Good stuff from both.

I would like to read @Shroud 's take on this

Yes, briefly saw his fh stroke on first ros add court. Obviously you can't judge from one match, could have stuck to bagging his fh drive this match for whatever reason. But ... not a good long-term strategy on those short FHs imo ... drive those balls to a corner. 8-B(y) I am not talking about their near the baseline hitting. This match is had one player hitting good drive ts FHs and another FH slicing. Ballboy got some pretty fh winners, but for the most part didn't impact 1st set as much as UEs. Run around at the back of the court ... stroke it back, slice it back, chop it back ... point continues. BUT ... if you want to advance, you have to treat short balls as opportunity rather than just point continuation. When I was young and fast  ... my legs were better than my strokes, so my choice was c&c (now it's hit a full stroke to a corner and try and stay in control of point from there ... other guy doing the running). As a returner, I was willing to rope and dope from the baseline (1hbh slice, fh off pace) until you messed up and hit short ... then their passing shot was up to bat. It's a lot of pressure on your groundstroke to know that sucker is coming in on your short strokes. I know ... played against players all the time that did the same thing. It was actually a relief to play full baseliners, because my baseline rope a dope was always good/deep enough to rally with better ball strikers.

Thanks. I m in Melbourne Australia so no NTPR system. Looking at this I m definitely at least 4.0. Same level of play but our rallies go for much longer ie more Defence and more turning Defence to offence. Nice to finally know.

Here's a battle someone posted in the league section showing a 3.5 attacking at net. It's a fun watch.
Just sticking the racquet out in front allows him volley.
I must be easy to impress or something but this is quality tennis. I think if I slapped balls at black shirt he'd be able to get a good racket on it.

@BallBag just watched most of the match. Not much to say really, hard to judge as the opponent was just slicing the ball back, some times terribly, which is uncomfortable but you knew what was coming at you, you just had to get low to lift the ball which you did well but I noticed maybe you hit the ball a little too much with the lower part of the string? So maybe separating yourself a bit more from the contact point.
Against big servers I always drop deep to get a bit more time to react making sure to split step to gain that little bit of time to block the ball back. Also you could have forced a few more errors by pressuring him on his second serve by getting closer to the service line.
The last thing is that you want to put your weight into those shots you should be putting away, I know its a bit hard but its always a matter of habit and making sure you are staying on your toes.
Maybe you did fix these things on that second set anyway but good match and keep strong bludfam.

I agree with the points you made, but Fratbro is literally a nightmare opponent to face in the first round of a 4.0 tournament.

@BallBag was coming off an injury, which is why he asked me to come early to help warm him up. Ballbag came out tight from nerves in the first set, and it was really hard for him to get into any type of rhythm vs. an opponent who hits a huge serve, slices 90% of his shots, and has impeccable touch if you try to rush him at the net.

Fair enough, given the score on the second set I imagine he did fix some of the things he was struggling with.
I'd love to see another video against an opponent with better ground strokes and more variation, you seem to make a good job in editing. I'm going to attempt to record a match this week but I find the editing too time consuming.

When our schedules match up, ballbag and I will record a match vs. each other.

Just like stringing, the more you edit the faster you get, I can edit a normal length set in less than 15 minutes if I went 100% focus.

Both Adam and his partner there were bumped to 4.0, just FYI. But yeah, everyone thinks they need to Bryant Bros the balls when sticking a racquet up will do the trick a lot of time. :D

I wasn't hitting better but making less errors on forhand and volleys. He's a speedy guy and running down volleys I just blocked to the open court. It would definitely be a good practice match because I don't naturally gravitate towards the net and his play was forcing me forward. I didn't feel confident hitting through the ball against him. I don't know if it shows in the video but the ball didn't bounch high or had some junk on it so I couldn't be more aggressive. I also just naturally hit with more topspin than drive.

A lot of the feedback I'm getting is good and sound but I just can't execute it well enough for a match so I take as things to work on in practice.

@BallBag great playing! This was the tournament I was prepping the last couple months for, and I ran into an emergency work coverage situation that I could not get out of so I was unable to participate. Gah, so disappointing!

I was keeping up with the bracket nonetheless and saw the crazy amount of players, did you end up playing 2 matches a day all weekend? If so, it must have been a marathon.

Either way, are you and @TennisProdigy located in the Montgomery County area in Maryland? Would love to hit with you guys sometime!

Unfortunate work emergency... ballbag played two matches Saturday, then I suspect he would’ve played two matches Sunday but he lost in three tight sets 7-5 2-6 10-7 Sunday morning.

I live in Ellicott City so pretty close, I’m free to hit pretty much every Mon., Tues, Weds., and Friday in the morning and afternoon.

If you come to my club I will also pay for the court time. I accept all challengers :giggle:

Lost a tight one on Sunday so that was it for me. Video should happen soon once I finger out how to edit a video.

I think there's a good amount of ttw in the area so a Meetup would be great. Might not be doable untill spring though, you know how indoor court time is around here.

@TennisProdigy Weekday mornings and afternoons are a little tricky, but I might be able to work something out if our holiday schedules line up.

@BallBag I'm also looking at going into more tournaments next year in the area, so at the very least, I'm sure we'll get a chance to meet or play at some point! I'll definitely have to improve and step up my own game to make it a good match.

Some people had 3 matches on Sunday.
