Does anyone use any type of video editing, or video analysis software that they can recommend?

Something that is freeware or opensource (for Windows) would be best, but if it's not too expensive, that wouldn't be bad either.

Basically, I've taken a look at some software, such as Motion Pro, and a couple of others (their names elude me at the moment) and it seems like a good idea, but I don't want to invest money (avoid it if possible) just to be disappointed.

I guess that most beneficial feature of the software would have to be split screen. The ability to add notes, etc. would be great too.

Thanks for any help anyone can provide.
