Wanted to share this. Amazing:

Guess everyone has their Vilas stories-remember Kooyong back in 1979/80 & Blinky Bill Vilas in the gym benchpressing ridiculous weights, all the qualifiers terrified of him -hitting next to him, he was with Tiriac & the entourage!
we hit for 2 hours, went to have a drink, downtown in the city, got back & he was still hitting after 5 hours!
I think personally he overtrained but if anybody could do it, he could.
The guy was a rockstar, poet, tennis player, bushlawyer (He had to be later)...
legend!
I was in awe because he could work so hard & for so long.
Borg had him on the dirt & most other places but it didn't stop Vilas trying..warrior.
Rafa is getting there...hoping he doesn't need Tiriac!

Madrid 1982: Wilander,Noah and Lendl in five sets ( trailing 0-2 ¡¡¡)
I would also consider the 2 AO wins, although the best players were not in the field in 1978 and 1979

Curiously enough, when I think of this Australian, I think of his solid doubs team with Mark Edmondson ( top 5 for a while) but seldom as an AO runner up.Fact is that there were many unexpected finalists in the AO in those years.Guys such as Teacher,Sadri,Warwick,Denton,LLoyd and John Marks.

I give importance for the Australian Open victories because Vilas went there "for the glory" To win other Grand Slam title. He was very happy to win there. And in part he took it like a preparation for Wimbledon.

Yes, I wonder if John Marks tried everything to continue with a succesful career, or if his career would have been different if he had won the title!

Also there were unexpected finalist or champions in the women side, no? Seems the most surpresive were the protagonist of 1978 and 1979 finals: Chris O'Neil, Betsy Nagelsen, Barbara Jordan and Sharon Walsh. Interesting to investigate about their careers.
