The thing is, he's actually very analytical and has interesting things to say. TC or NBC should get him on and have him commentate. He's played all of these guys and Courier + Gilbert haven't. I'd love to see him and Gilbert go at it.

is he actually retired now?

maybe i should use my twitter account to link him to one of Chopin's Spadea V Laver threads and see if we can get him in here to weigh in. lol

What does a guy like Vince do when the tennis career is over and the rap album never materialised?

He's a funny guy, I wish him the best.

Why is he not playing in the Champions tour ??? I am sure he needs the money. I hope he isn't on Welfare.

Vince did win a tournament in ATP tour so that qualifies him for the champions tour automatically.

You feel sorry for him when he tweets

"Vince Spadea

And no one replies!

I've got inside info that he's training for a challenge match against Rod Laver. Check it out:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWnx-WXq0T8

Note: If you're one of the multitude of 4.0-5.0 players who can whup Lendl in a challenge match you can skip this post. However, if you're not...

A lot of you might look at that video and think, "Vince Spadea, former ATP touring pro, hitting on a wall at some schoolyard, all by himself. How sad."

I look at that video and see great footwork, tiny little steps, always moving, to get into position to hit those smooth, grooved strokes. I took that mental image of that footwork with me when I had a hit with a friend today, and the results were good. Thanks, Vince.

Love him or hate him, Spadea played with the big boys for many years, and deserves a little respect!

Vince Spadea does run after tennis ball........Tennis balls run away from Vince Spadea.

The hell with Rod Laver he is not worthy of Vince Spadea.

Agreed! I've been playing tennis, and hitting against walls, for over 40 years, and neither I, nor anyone I've ever seen, could keep the ball alternating b/t fh and bh continuously like that. It's not just his footwork, it's also the precision of his hitting - keeping the ball coming back to nearly the same spot over and over. That's impressive. It's obvious he's a World class player in that vid. I was just making light of Chopin's past comments that Spadea was better than a prime Laver.

Not really

To be eligible to compete on the ATP Champions Tour, players must have been either a World No. 1 during their competitive playing careers, a Grand Slam singles finalist, or a singles player in a victorious Davis Cup team; and they should have retired from the ATP circuit

The one Courrier runs has slightly less stringent requirements- but Spadea wouldn't qualify for that either.

The reason he isnt allowed on the senior tours is because Spadea aint a fraid a ya.

Everyone should be affraid of Vince.

Read his book, he's very entertaining. I would rather have him in the booth than BG.

Yep, he's working really hard, because he knows that even post-stroke and at age 73 Laver can still bagel him.

Was surprised to find out that Vince Spadea had a very nice career as a pro reaching a high of #18 and a win over Federer, Agassi, Roddick etc. Recall he had a sister who was much more touted that he was (forgot her name :)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vince_Spadea

Saw him along time ago on the satellite tour, had metronome-like consistency on the groundies, but wasn't too impressed by his overall game (no real weapon). Think he grinded it out on the tour long enough to position himself as a top level journeyman.

Wish him the best in his post-career! :) (sorry, rapping is not his forte')

Vincent Spadea had two sisters who played tennis, Diana and Luanne.

Spadea had a career high world ranking of number 18, and his best match victory has to be his 6-1, 7-5, 6-7, 6-3 win over Agassi in the R16 at the 1999 Australian Open.

He just said that(with the exception of the score)...you even quoted him saying it.

It's not a competition, for goodness sakes. I mentioned Spadea's career highest ranking again. So what? I also said the names of Spadea's tennis playing sisters and specifically mentioned Spadea's win over Agassi at the 1999 Australian Open.

Read his book, he's very entertaining. I would rather have him in the booth than BG.

That book was insightful, but also, a bit bizarre and sad in a way. The awkward segues into his "white boy rap," that supposedly impressed Serena Williams (really!), that he should have outgrown 15 years earlier ("Spadea ain't afraid-a-ya" would be an apt exemplar), the advice on how to dress to pick up girls (that he never seemed to go home with because of his putative moral values), and the promising wins in his successful comeback to the top 20 that always seemed to be overshadowed by heartbreaking losses that kept him from achieving his ultimate goal of a top 10 ranking, all combined to make some of the strangest non-fiction reading I've experienced in a long time.

Its all an act. Vince is a jokester. He is not really like that outside his alter ego. Vince is actually a very nice and down to earth guy. His dad is a real hoot as well.

Actually Spadea had two sisters, the older one was named Luanne, the younger Diana. They both played tennis at Duke.

I like Spadea's ATP Tour record---21 straight match losses, set in 2000. Who will break this record? Donald Young? (Sorry, I see Young is improving now....)

I think Courier mention you need to either be in the top 10 in the world rankings or have won a GS to qualify.

Still, someone should really help him clean that up! Yikes!

More to the point, here's an interesting snapshot from this blog (great read, BTW) from a few years ago...

Throughout his lengthy career, Spadea has appeared in 52 grand slam tournaments as a singles player, has represented the USA in Davis Cup and in the 2000 and 2004 Olympics and has earned about $4.9 million in prize money. In addition to the aforementioned victories over Agassi and Federer, he has also defeated Pete Sampras, Rafael Nadal, Jim Courier, Gustavo Kuerten, Michael Chang, Patrick Rafter, and Andy Roddick. To date, Spadea has won 309 career matches, one ATP-level singles title, three doubles titles and eight challenger tournaments. Spadea, currently ranked No. 81 in the World, spends time training in Los Angeles, as well as in Boca Raton. Next week in Melbourne, Spadea will start his 2009 season by playing in his 12th Australian Open.

A career a lot would love to have (had)!

And I still think that little youtube video of him hitting against a wall is a great tennis lesson, for free, for those with eyes to see!
