Virginia Wade is only the 2nd British woman to win Wimbledon in the Open Era and the last one to date. Along with Angela Mortimer Barrett (1961 champion) and Ann Haydon-Jones (1969 champion) she is 1 of just 3 surviving British women who have won Wimbledon. It was her 16th attempt to win the tournament and her 3rd and last Grand Slam singles title (after 1969 US Open and 1972 Australian Open).
Her win over Betty Stöve in the final coincided with a rare visit to Centre Court by Queen Elizabeth II who was celebrating the silver jubilee of her reign that year (1977). She presented the trophy to Virginia.
