This thread is for those fortunate enough to live (or travel) in the states that are home to the most American of establishments. Yes, the awful waffle better known as Waffle House.
This is not for anyone to be critical, if you don't appreciate the waffle then please move on.
When you see the huge sign from miles away, park and walk in to be greeted often by a friendly waitress with a deep scratchy smoky voice, listen to both types of music on the Jukey (country and western), and then settle up what is always a very reasonable bill it is just a sublime experience.
As a vegetarian I am somewhat limited on my regular visits so always go for the Cheese Omelette (sometimes add mushrooms) and hash browns smothered, covered and sometimes peppered. Maybe you eat meat and therefore can gorge on the pork chops or steak. This is your right.
I have many tales of the bizarre people and situations that have occurred on my numerous visits but let's hear yours.
And again, I don't want to hear how other places are better. Negativity is neither wanted nor welcome.
Open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year since 1955 you know you are planning a trip just reading this.

I love Waffle House! There's no better than you and your driving companion pulling into one, getting a booth or stools, and proceeding to eat, drink coffee and be real. Or, perhaps you're alone with your paper (paper??), coffee and grub. Gimme some grits! There's actually a Waffle House museum in Decatur, GA. But go for the real thing!

Fact #1: This thread kicks arse!
Fact #2: I grew up in VA, interned in SC, spent pretty much my first 30 years of life in the dirty South and have enjoyed hundreds of meals in dozens of Waffle House locations in nearly every southern state.
Fact #3: I have NEVER ordered a waffle at Waffle House. I have tried them from other's plates, though
Fact #4: I ALWAYS, ALWAYS go smothered, covered, diced and peppered (and sometimes capped). Typical order is eggs, hash browns and bacon. Every once in a while, I go for the biscuits and gravy, though I need to be either really, really drunk or really, really hung over.

My sentiments exactly. If you can get over the globs of uncooked food and napkins laying around on the greasy floors, it's a good place to eat. The food is good. The prices low. Use to stop at the Waffle House after a night of clubbing and having a case of the munchies. I usually eat the pecan waffles, Jimmy Dean sausage patties and the hash browns. My cousin got banned from one Waffle House, when he smarted off to a cook that went by the name "Slim". This was like 25 years ago. Friends still laugh about that one.

Use to always stop at Waffle Houses on our family vacations from Louisville to Florida. Still like to eat breakfast there every month of so. Always says I'm never coming back, but always do.

Being from eastern NC, Waffle House was and is a staple restaurant. I'm glad they're fairly common down here in FL.

I don't know if I've ever had a waffle, but IIRC during my last trip to the US (2000), when I was staying at some hotel on Jacksonville Beach, there was a Waffle House on their Main Street just off an intersection.

I often walked down to WH from my Quality Inn / Holiday Inn to have dinner which usually was an omelet with hash browns.

The first time I heard about waffles was when Nike came out with their Waffle Trainer. This was wayyyyy back before some of ya fellahs were born.

Used to work the grave yard shift. Bought beer before 2am. Would slam the beer at 6am, and drive to the waffle house. Order the hash browns smothered and chunked iirc. Repeat the next morning.

That food would kill me no. Yuck

Always struck me as more of a southern United States kind of thing. I've actually never been to a Waffle House as there aren't many in the city here. They're mostly along the highways outside of town. It's mostly IHOP and Denny's here in town and there are a few Cracker Barrel's as well. We also have a place called House of Pies (2 in town) that's surprisingly makes really great breakfast in addition to all kinds of pies - and is also 24/7. Katz's is another popular place in town that is also 24/7, in which you can get breakfast all day every day.

I thought Waffle House (TM) was Hollywood's attempt to adapt the Patrick Swayze's movie Road House into a Sureshs vehicle. The synopsis goes something like: "Sureshs retires from a lucrative career in competitive eating, and is hired by his former rival in the circuit to tame a rough-and-dirty roadside waffle house populated by morbidly obese bikers and fat old ladies burning their Social Security paychecks in a debauchery of pancakes and weenie links smothered in syrup."

Charleston is the largest city in South Carolina, but not the capital, as that is Columbia.

I have never been to Waffle House territory, but have been to a Denny's in Buttonwillow (and elsewhere in California), and an IHop just east of Del Mar. Is Waffle House much different than these franchises?

Yes.

Denny's and I Hop are more restauranty.

Waffle House has a much more basic concept, like they are copying the small counter greasy spoon model.

Waffle House is cheaper and faster and they cook the food behind the counter in full view of everyone. It's just not the same.
