Was Nadal simply not motivated enough to break the slam record?

every player is “motivated’. Only a few are good enough to truly join the slam race. It appears only one will be great enough to win it.

Actually this is really damn funny. Because it's true that a new narrative has arisen in recent months about Djokovic supposedly being more maniacally motivated than Rafa during the same period in which it finally looks like Djokovic will win the Slam race after pounding Nadal into dust dust dust dust at RG. I know it originally got legs through some comments Nadal made about Djokovic and himself some months back or whatever.

It's what happens when you rely on just winning RG every year or getting cakewalks at the USO. It doesn't go your way for just 1 year and you start to fall behind.

Keep mind that he's the only one of the 4 who isn't married and has kids. Overall, he's one of the most driven athletes I've ever seen in any sports, what he says in the press is largely irrelevant (actions, not words).
Novak is way more driven than Nadal. I don't buy that for a moment. Marriage says nothing about who is driven or not - it's more about lifestyle and the kids/travel etc.
What hurts Nadal most is his parochial thought process. A Spanish coach ALWAYS, no international guidance, never thinking out of the box - no experimentation with equipment, technical changes, schedule etc.
I mean let's be honest - Nadal is a Spanish clay courter who was talented enough to expand his game to other surfaces. He never morphed his game to become a truly aggressive fast court player or have a big serve. You can't be GOAT with a crappy serve and bad ROS.

Novak tried with Becker, Goran, Todd Martin etc etc and evolved his game with Neo serve+ netplay.. Fed has had numerous international coaches including ljubicic who was responsible for Fed winning 3-4 more slams, neo backhand and beating Nadal.
Against this, what has Nadal done? He's fallen behind. Realistically he will finish comfortably behind Djokovic and Fed in the BOAT/GOAT conversation.

As I said before RG this year... if Nadal didn't win, Nadal and his fans would end up like Shooter McGavin stealing the gold jacket. It was a foregone conclusion to them after waiting a very long time.

That is especially going to be the case if Novak gets to 21 first.

Novak even got the double career slam after Nadal fans hyped up the achievement every Aussie Open for years and years.

He already said he wants 25 slams. Having a rival climbing on his back to take the ultimate prize right on the finish line must be one good motivation also.

Slams won facing big 4

Djokovic - 17/19
Nadal - 12/20

Big 4

You're also missing the point. Nadal has never had a season or multiple seasons without a fellow big three playing at an elite level like Federer and Djokovic enjoyed.

Neither did Djokovic. Not a single year.

Nadal won 2 slams in 2010 and 2017 without facing a big 3. When did Djokovic ever have that easy a time?

I don't discount Nadal from the Slam race, only Federer. Djokovic is more likely to get to 21 first though, so I'm not sure Nadal will ever break the record.

It really just boils down to timing. Federer got to enjoy 2004-2008, Djokovic got to enjoy multiple stretches without serious big three competition. Nadal never enjoyed such seasons.

This is a cope, and a fact ;)

Reality is nobody enjoyed.

What is so hard for you to understand is that your hero did not have the ability to dominate an era.

Being a 1 surface specialist is why your hero is 1 dimensional and lags in all sorts of record ....

Federer and Djokovic were actual talents who dominated multiple surfaces

Even in 2019 it was Federer who challenged Djokovic on grass while your hero was nonsense on grass since 2012, thats how weak he is.

So how can he enjoy when his game is weak outside clay ???

When you are bad at maths then you won't enjoy maths exam and if you are a genius then you will enjoy multiple maths exams scoring high, no use cursing exam paper or teacher because your skills r low .... :-D

In Nadal's case he never enjoyed like Fed's 00s or Djokovic's 2010s because he himself was bad outside clay.

Nadal has beaten Djokovic plenty of times in the biggest matches. More so than the other way round, I'd say. Nadal spent years doing it to Federer, too.
exclusively in clay since 2013. So losing in RG was a particularly harsh blow

Well, like others have said, it is already a HUGE tally for Rafa , given he only won 7 amongst 3 majors and still got to 20.

You can only go so far with one major.

You do realize the topic of this thread, right?

Nadal has equalled the slam record, at 20, so the thread question is an odd one. Also, Nadal's mindset is to stay in the present, not to get carried away with thoughts of "destiny".

Nadal said, “I can’t go crazy thinking about 20th grand slam. I just try to keep my way. I just try to keep enjoying tennis. Of course, I would love to finish my career with 25, if it’s possible. But the thing is… Let’s see… Let’s see… I hope to keep producing myself the opportunity in the next couple of years.” as quoted by Essentially Sports.

Another Nadal quote “I would love to have children: boys, girls… I’m a person who loves kids and I’m a family guy. But also I tell you that the reality is, the years keep passing, I would like to start to do all of this when my sporting life determines it.”

Looks like his sporting life takes precedence over his family life and he would like to finish his career with 25 Slams - let’s not act as if he is not extremely ambitious just like all great champions are.

When is Djokovic gonna start aging bro?

When the energy pyramids stop supplying him power he will start ageing.

He is like Dorian Gray who has a painting of himself built and stored somewhere, every wear and tear he has in real life is reflected in the painting, the painting grows old while novak remains young.

That is his secret, that's his energy pyramid.

Only Srjan Djokovic knows the secret location of that painting, it is hidden somewhere in Serbia in a remote location not known to anyone.

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have reportedly hired a few spies nd detectives to find out about this painting to destroy it but they have failed.

Well, you can bring that up with the OP

Nadal shares slam record with Fed. This would not happen if he wasn't motivated enough to break the record. The same as Djoker and Fed. We cannot judge motivation by what is said or not said to the media.

Some of his withdrawals - USO last year and Wimbledon this year, seem too conservative for me. I get he wants to avoid injuries but these were golden chances squandered when the slam lead was so close. He might regret these decisions down the line when he doesn't end up with the record.

I agree with Wimbledon 2021 (feels slightly defeatist from my limited perspective)

US Open 2020 was simply too much... just look what happened to Thiem. He put all his eggs into one basket and look how well it turned out.
