Was... Was that Ultron in USO2018 finals?

There are more than few series of games where Novak showed some serious ultronian play. Could Ultron be back before this year ends?

Yes, he will be back. Not only at the end of this year but next year as well in hunt for CYGS and GOAT status.

The SFs and Finals were excellent matches from Nole especially and along with the Wimbledon SF, are probably his best matches since the injury, along with maybe a handful of other not so big matches.

Del Potro was serving 125-135 mph bombs and Novak was able to deflect and return nearly ALL of them....

I would say that Del Potro and Kei were playing pretty well against Novak too...
Novak’s level just steadily rose since Wimbledon and hes probably back to 2015 level.

His ground game and even his volleys are pretty solid now.

I’m most impressed by his improvements on serve, he seems unbreakable at times.

I just want Djokovic, Federer, and Nadal to have titanic matches again

It's the best I've ever seen him play ever. Previously I put his clay 2011 form against Nadal ahead of anything else. No longer. That was world class tennis today from Djokovic and his ROS was absolutely and without question, the greatest returning I've ever seen.
I think it was the first point of the second set where I was thinking, how is he returning all this??

del Potro tried hard and gave it all and I believe he would have beaten anyone in that final except for Djokovic at that level. Tough, tough, crazy tough..

Djokovic has made great improvements to his game. This is as good as you'll get. Scary stuff

He is now Vision, no more robotic Ultron, plays with infinity power. Can we get Thanos mode?

He was actually mad he got broken. And for a moment I thought he might melt with that hit to the head he did. But, he didn't, which is impressive. Del Potro plays awesome tennis, I mean really, really good. But, Ultron is just like a wall. Slight, should gain some weight brick wall that somehow hits deep almost to the baseline balls that few could even get to. I am impressed. And he didn't really whine at all.

I can't say his serving was that impressive, but maybe the stats don't back up my impressionistic viewing.

Mats said after the game (Eurosport) that peak Djok is higher than peak Fedr or peak Nadal. Those words from him surprised me, I must admit. Almost no fault.
But, you must not have heard Mats talk in person? He is always talking about Nadal and Fed being scared of playing Djokovic. Since 2011 he has had a thing for Djokovic. Which is fine, but bias.

Pretty close to full Ultron mode. The only thing is his backhand is not quite back to that 2015 level and he made a lot more backhand errors this tournament than forehand errors, and his serve dropped off a bit compared to Wimbledon. Other than that, yes. His forehand is immaculate right now and so is his returning and defense, as well as controlled offense.

It's amazing how quickly things can change in even one season. He was hitting such weak and awkward shots during the AO and the clay season and his FH was barely making it to the middle of the back court in some of those matches. Then at Wimbledon, he was getting closer to his best form but barely made it past Nadal (I believe Nadal was owning him off the ground in most rallies). This USO though, he is back to beating world class players in straight sets.

This was a nice statement from Novak and a clear result of his perseverance and hard work. Ultron is back!

Let’s not overlook the grainy court that helped blunt the effect of those bombs.

Slowest USO courts since??

Djokovic nearly unbeatable on slow HC when he’s in a groove.

Yea he was struggling with his game earlier this year, still with the nagging injury, and through the clay season. It was at Rome where his game showed life and then once he hit the grass he looked like a totally different player. He barely made it past Nadal but Nadal played the best he's played in at least 7 years on grass and Djokovic played very well too. It wasn't his very top level but still very good. He had a little letdown in Canada and struggled in Cincinnati but showed great mental toughness. It wasn't until the Cincinnati final that he took his game close to what it needed to be and he carried that form into the USO. I think he got better in each match at the USO.

What is amazing for Novak - it's fact that he is not declined much from 2015 level. At age of 31 Federer was far away from his best, so was Nadal. But this Djokovic guy doesn't feel any effect of age.

He is moving as well as he did in 2015, just the backhand isnt quite as good especially DTL. Return might be BETTER, at least today

I expect 2019 to be the transition year. Between Thiem, Pouille, Zverev, Tsitsipas, Shapavalov - one of them may break thru. Nadal and Fed can be upset by a bunch of players including Delpo, Stan, etc which would mean the main obstacle is Djoker. If Djoker is upset by Kyrgios or someone, then like WTA -one of Ostapenko, Osaka, Halep , Wozniacki - winning - same thing will happen in ATP.

I think we are just 2 majors away from ATP becoming a WTA

Oh I so hope so! I want a real changing of the guard even though Nole's a fave! Congrats to him for taking his 3 USO and 14th MAJOR overall! :p ;)

Well, as far as I could hear the words Mats was using to critique Djokovic were not that positive, many times. So, certainly he is not bias. Not one bit. I reckon if you dig deep you will find that he might have said something nice about him only on a very few occasions.

Mats and Agassi both claiming Ultron is back and stronger than ever - is there any weight to this statements?

Fed in 2012 was just as good as Djokovic is this year. But he had actual young talent to compete against.

It's easy to look at 31 like you're 25 when you are only facing fellow oldies.

So where did he go after RG 2016 for 2 years then? Injured, perhaps, but that's the same as being affected by age is it not? How come Federer was never injured for 2 whole years?
