Since I have been watching tennis (not long, 2006) I spend alot of my youtube tennis time rewatching Roddick videos from his 3 final matches.

The Hewitt match is probably the most entertaining, with the highest level being played IMO.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sAPIGOGe69s&feature=related

If you watch the first couple minutes you can hear Hewitt cursing as Roddick nails 4 unreturnables in a row after he was up love-30. As much as people knock Rusty for his drop in play, which is true, in this match he played unbelievable.

Of it's the whole tournament then I would say Wimby 1985, the first year Becker won it.

    Escude def. Hewitt
    Federer def. Sampras
    Henman def. Martin
    Henman def. Federer
    Ivanisevic def. Safin
    Rafter def. Agassi
    Ivanisevic def. Henman

I won't say 09 was the most exciting because the defending champ was not even defending his title. Something was missing.

08 was so-so until the final. But it should be up there.

That win by goran was by far the best:D.

best tennis might have been 08. very tight match and both played very good tennis. nadal just won the french and fed was just on his way to top shape again after his bad first half due to the illness(won the USO later and then of course had his great 09).

very good tennis, fed could have won this one.

08, though fed lose...T_T...but 09 is good too, but i prefer FED vs Nadal, but FED winning....don't like to see Fed loses to Nadal in a GS final

If the semis and the final hadn't been routine straight setters, last years tournament could have gone down as one of the best.

I would say 2001, it had an incredible number of great 5 set matches including the two semifinals and finals. I can think of:

    Hewitt v Dent
    Sampras v Cowan
    Federer v Sampras
    Henman v Martin
    Ivanisevic v Henman
    Rafter v Agassi
    Ivanisevic v Rafter

There were also some good 4 set matches:

    Ivanisevic v Roddick
    Ivanisevic v Safin
    Agassi v Escude

    Plus two great women matches:

    Capriati v Serena
    Henin v Capriati

2011 didn't live up to the hype. Tsonga ruined the epicness of Djokovic vs Federer, and Djokovic and Nadal both played very error-prone in the final.

Nothing beats the year Goran won it over Rafter. Included an epic SF between Agassi-Rafter. The best SF/F combo in history.

I find it a bit weird that people mention 2008 and 2009 but not 2007.

2007 had 2 great matches involving Djokovic (Hewitt and Baghdatis) plus the match with Nadal that he sadly had to retire from. You had Nadal involved in 2 5 setters on the way to the final (Soderling - with added drama! and Youzhny)

The final in my opinion was a better standard from both players than the 2008 final. The 2008 one was more dramatic but patchy. Federer choked many breakpoints in the first two sets and Nadal wobbled himself in the next two, before Federer played a conservative 5th, sort of falling away while Nadal remained solid in defence.

    In recent years I would say 2001, 2007, 2008

Did you not see any of the first week? There were so many good matches last year in the first week. Though the tournament fizzled down a bit in week 2.

Wimbledon is mostly remembered because of it´s second week includign the SF/F.
There are always great matches in the first week of the tournament, every single year.
Still I think last years Wimbledon was awful.

I'll remember a good match whatever the round it took place, last year for me was a standout first week. One of the best I've seen along with Aussie Open 08.

I actually grew tired of how predictable the second week of Slams have been ever since Fed started dominating, so I've got to say I really enjoy the first week of Slams often more than the second week.

Agreed. It was one of the best if not the best first week of a slam I have ever seen as well.
The second week and especially the final turned out to be laughable, but it was one hell of a first week with so many 5 setters, starting with the very first match of the tournament, Federer x Falla. Imagine if Federer had been upset on the very first round there, the maelstrom that it would cause... we would still be engulfed in this mess to this day.

And Isner x Mahut anyone??? :)

Djokovic wasn't error-prone for the first two sets, though! He played unbelievable. Actually, Nadal played very well in the first set, too. In fact, he couldn't have played much better, especially serving.

I think 2008 was the best. I know it is a cliche statement, but that was the best match I have ever seen. I rooted for Federer the entire match and was crushed when he lost, but I was happy for Nadal because I thought his win was very inspirational. I felt bad for him when he lost in 2007 because he looked absolutely crushed afterwards. He went to hell and back just to reach the final and then lost an epic match he very well could have won. I thought (incorrectly) that his confidence had been wrecked.

His performance at wimbledon 2008 was incredible. Unlike the years before, Nadal was not vulnerable at all in the early rounds. He was destroying everyone with ease and as a Federer fan I was getting very worried. I felt that it was Nadal's year, but I was hoping Federer could delay him once more. Sadly (for me), it did not happen. It sucked watching every minute of that match and then watching Fed lose, but Nadal played far better than Federer for a vast majority of the match and deserved it more.

2001 without a doubt for me was the most exciting from start to finish. There has been other great Wimbledons, but this was just perfect. And my favorite of all time Goran FINALLY winning the title.

    You Cannot Be Serious!

Hands down! We have a winner: 1980!!!

    1. Greatest tiebreaker ever. Forces 5th set for 4-time defending champion. He responds with a fifth set masterpiece that featured only three points lost on serve in a 14-game set.

    2. Count 'em: 24 five-setters in the men's singles. These included 9 that went past 7-all.

    3. A women's draw that featured two 3-set semis and a quartefinal epic loss for Billie Jean King, 10-8 in the decisive third set.

^ Yeah, I remember 1980. I was following it on radio -- long before they began telecasting tennis on telly in India.

Did you see it on telly, or in person or much later ?

2007 was the best quality-wise. 2008 was the best drama-wise. 2001 was the only one worth making a movie about.

Stone Age TV Was My Source

I was in New York at the time so my only "live" viewing was NBC's weekend offerings. Also, this was before Wimby shifted the men's final to Sunday so there was little coverage of anything but the finals. With JMac involved, there was extreme hype in the NYC press. I watched every point of the final though.

It definitely did, it was a great final, two amazing athletes at their respective peaks going at each other, can's ask for a better entertainment.

Yes, Jo stopped Fed from handing over yet another slam to GOAT Rafa.

Actually it was one of the finest grass performances in Nadal's career although it obviously wasn't good enough to handle peak Novak, unfortunately hitting CC FHs all day long wasn't enough this time around.

    Why didn´t you include 2008?

2008: HAHA! Suck it dear Fed! The clay-GOAT dethroned you in your own backyard and allowed you to be close just so the loss would hurt even more, no?

Another fanboy arrived here, though I doubt he´ll stay for a long time.
