Obviously 2009 comes foremost to mind, but given that Roddick couldn't beat Federer if Federer gave him the paddle (which Wimbledon 2009 should have aptly demonstrated), was his failure to win it the next year in wake of Federer's freak loss to Berdych the biggest miss of his career? Obviously beating a hot Nadal was no guarantee, but bowing out to Lu of all people on grass? This would be like if Goran had lost to Safin after Roger took out PETE in 2001.

So was Wimbledon 2010 the biggest miss of Roddick's career? What were his chances of winning compared to Fed-final years?

Roddick, by his standards, was not at his best in 2010 on grass. He had a freak loss at a grass tune up before Wimbledon and had some really patchy performances against Llodra and Kohly prior to facing Lu. If he had managed to beat Lu, I'm pretty sure Novak would have been the end of that road in the QF.
But was not showing up at a high level at that Wimbledon in and of itself a missed opportunity?

No. Roddick had no way of knowing Fed would lose to Berdych.

Also, even at his best form, would Roddick have been able to beat, in order, Novak then Fed then Nadal? Assuming none of them lost before Roddick faced them?

What about the 2001 U.S. Open? He blew break points and had that bad call against Hewitt in the fifth set of their QF. If he had won that, Kafelnikov played terribly in the SF, and Sampras was out of gas in the final. Sure, Sampras probably takes down Roddick in the final, but if Andy had won the 2001 U.S. Open, I wonder whether his career turns out differently.

Was it really a bad call? It was a Hewitt's kind of match, i.e. a scrap against a hostile night crowd. Hewitt was also more experienced and battle hardened than Roddick at this point, and it was a big factor. I thought Hewitt was zoning in the semi and final. That whole racism controversy just fuelled Hewitt's defiance against those who were against him. If Hewitt back then was around today, he'd wind them up even more, and he never forgot that competing in tennis was the most important thing, not the trash talk.

The line judge called it in, and "[t]elevision appeared to confirm the ball clipped the line." The chair umpire overruled the call on the far side of the court. Raging Roddick loses quarter-final cool

Roddick is not as great as Goran to get a 2001 moment as late as 2010/2011.

However Roddick came closer to win in 2009 than Goran did in 1998, that was Roddick's missed chance.

Safin in wimblefon 2001 was very good, goran needed to play/ serve his best and he was suoer clutch. it was still a very close match, with goran winning the biggest points.

Nadal was peaking in 2010 at the slams, I don't give Roddick much of a chance. Even his best 03-05 form couldn't beat 2010 Nadal. . Nadal was too good that year and damn near in unbeatable form. 2009 was Roddick's chance with Fed in poor form in the finals and he blew it. Nadal would just attack Roddick's Backhand into oblivion. And Roddick sucked at the net, so even if he wanted to come in, Nadal would pass shot him all day

Marat Safin actually said afterwards that he would be "pissed" at Goran if Goran didn't win the title. Goran didn't let him down ;)

He was being coached by the vampire that is Larry Stefanki so while he had a much improved 2009 and an excellent start to 2010, the vampire curse came knocking and by Wimbledon his blood debt was owed.

This thread is pretty ridiculous. Nadal was in great form at Wimbledon 2010, he was not losing to Roddick in the unlikely event Roddick somehow made the final. Roddick himself was not in good form by that point. His form somehow collapsed after Miami 2010 (where yes he beat Nadal and some others to win the event). And a draw of Djokovic, a very in form Berydch who beat both Federer and Djokovic so it was a career tournament for him, and then Nadal, would likely be too much for even a good Roddick, let alone the subpar Roddick of the time of Wimbledon 2010. Glad to see nearly all the responses are basically just laughing at the OP.

Roddick's biggest missed opportunity was Wimbledon 2009, as others have said. Wimbledon 2010 wouldn't even make the top 20 missed opportunities in his career of something.

The thread is neither ridiculous, nor is anyone laughing at OP although most disagree. Please join us back in reality, where insults are not needed to make simple points

Well my point is that if Roddick had shown up to 2010 W in form that was close to 2009 - which imo is a reasonable expectation imo as he wasn't having once in a lifetime Kracijek-esque form in 2009 but playing at a sustainable, high level within himself - had he shown up with a similar level and Fed had crashed out, I think he'd have had a good chance to get through Novak and into the final. Who knows, with 2009-ish form, which was some of his best, he may have foiled Nadal (pausing to give space to hyena-esque mob picketers to attack) and won the title. Roddick was never a straightforward match-up for Nadal the way other, greater players like Fed and Wawrinka were.
