The field is highlighted by Andy Roddick and Tommy Haas, the top two seeds. Roddick's side of the draw is quite weak. The only player in his half who might give Roddick some trouble is Vince Spadea. Haas' side of the draw is slightly more interesting, with Marat Safin, Gael Monfils, and a first round match between Tim Henman and John Isner.

Seems like a bit of a weak field. Did it just seem better a few years ago when Agassi was playing D.C. or was it stronger. I noticed guys with rankings in the 60's getting bye's.

I think there are a few reasons he is playing an event like this:

1)He is worried about his ranking, right now on the edge of the #3 way ranking, but alot of points to defend later this summer. Djokovic in particular does not. So he is looking to collect any points he can.

2)He is looking to take advantage of fields depleted of real top players and win tournaments to build confidence. He has not had alot of success vs top players this year, so playing events with depleted fields to potentialy pick up wins he might feel is a good way to build confidence before matching up against top guys again.

No Babe...it's actually better than usual....no one wants to be in DC in 100 degree heat...Agassi only came here because it was such a weak draw he was a practical shoe in....unfortunately, our little tourney is pretty far down on the food chain...I'm pulling for Tommy Haas

Honestly, after today's match, I hardly think Roddick is a shoe in anywhere.

Ah man...I thought I might get to see Gonzo:-( sorry his back is bad....
I didn't mean Andy being a shoe in...I meant Andre Agassi being the shoe in while trying to rebuild the career he almost threw away..he would always come here and almost always won

Safin had a great run in Washington last year making it to the semis but losing to eventual winner Arnaud Clement. I'm not sure if Clement was playning amazingly or if Safin gave up. I really hope he repeats his success again this year though, maybe even winning, but that is a big thing to hope for when we're talking about Safin. :?

I guess that would be the joy for anyone who is a fan of Safin, you never know what your going to get with him. But he might put in some effort and win a few rounds.

I was there, and in my opinion, it was Clement playing great. Safin played well, it was 7-6, 7-6 if I remember correctly (or was that the Safin-Blake score? Not sure!).

I would love to see Safin make a run this year, though, he is so much fun to watch.

i was at Legg Mason this am. I watched Henman practicing with Karlovic. Watch out for Henman, seems like he's back. He was cracking passing shots left and right. I saw Benjamin Becker too, although he seems like he's underperforming these days. Wanted to see Grosjean too, but rain came and everyone bolted quick.

But I saw this blonde E. European or Russian girl practicing on the side court with an old Yonex racquet (silver) practicing with a couple of Asian pros. If anyone was there today, anyone know who she was? I know I saw her play before on TV. Forgot her name...

Coolblue...I was there, too...until I gave up waiting for the rain to stop. I didn't spend too much time on the practice courts, but on the way out I did notice they had a practice court schedule posted on the fence. If you see her again, maybe that can help you out?

I know I saw Paes and Kunitsyn on the practice courts, anyone else I didn't recognize.

Andy Roddick should win that, i think he lost last week because of the heat, he went in the lockers couple of times and the commentators said that LA had alot of heat. He wasen't accustomed and prepared to all that heat, all his matches were night matches wich is pretty cool. Hope DC will be better.

I'm going out on a limb and picking Monfils to win. The guy is just full of talent, and he loves playing in the heat.

And also, if Roddick plays at or near the level he played at in Indianapolis, he'll lose to Stepanek in the third round.

I just checked and the final score was 76(5) 76(4), talk about close! I like watching Clement, I hope he does well too!

The rain was infuriating! Me and my friend arrived, watched Benneteau practiced for 5 min and then it started raining....for a few hours. :mad:
I hope it doesn't rain tomorrow.

If Henman wins his first round against Isner I will be surprised (although Isner should be fatigued after winning a challenger today)

Roddick has always played a heavy US summer schedule whenever he could (last year he had an injury I believe) without any detriment.

Like I said for Indy, Roddick shouldn't have a problem getting to the Finals with his draw, and should have a very good chance at winning the tournament altogether. But again, like what happened in Indy, I'm sure Roddick will find some way to disappoint.

Andy had an abysmal showing, and even his trusty serve was letting him down. How well he does here in DC is basically contingent upon his recovery and if he can regain his serving prowess. No one on his side of the draw should really scare him.

I'd like Safin to make a run as well, although you never know with him these days. Thus, my side pick goes to Haas.

It's a damn shame Murray pulled out. It's been a while since I've seen him play, but I guess he's got to do what's best for himself and make sure that wrist is 100%.

Hewitt isn't here this year? DOn't know why, he always does well every year. Does he have an injury?

He has been playing pro tournaments but may still be an amateur, I dont even know how to find out. He has done well though so should have some prize money and a great shot at a US Open wildcard.

Your right about Safin being Safin when it hasn't mattered. Also, with his track record and you as a fan, do you know when it matters with him?

I picked Safin to win the tournament, but let us face it he is consistently inconsistent. I am hoping that his new coaching relationship will show some positive signs this week, and equal to a few wins and then the title.

But I agree with some of is fans that he has the game cause a lot of damage on any given day, but even he it seems doesn’t know when those days are… :confused:

haha i like the consistently inconsistent part which im with you..and for some reason even though hes got the draw to win the tournament i see him losing to someone like monfils..no offense to him as i like to see him play

If Isner is serving well, I do not think Henman is going to be able to break him. If this is the case, Henman will have to beat Isner in two tiebreakers! I do not see that happening. I think Isner will have his chances to break Henman, and he only needs to convert on one of those break points in each set in order to win the match. Not to mention Isner is pretty damn tough in tiebreakers. So I am predicting Isner over Henman in the 1st round!
