Water Bottles and Security at US Open

Just wondering if you guys have any insight on this. US Open security does not allow water bottles, specifically the metal ones, into the event. I went to the qualifying rounds this week, and I had to throw out my bottle before they let me in. Are sporting events like airports now?

Just curious cuz I can't see any reason why a bottle is a security risk. And it's not the liquid inside that concerns them. It's the bottle.

Thanks.

Notwithstanding the USTA desire to sell water at the event, there's no way for the security people to know, short of tasting it, whether your bottle contains water or something more flammable/explosive. If you emptied the bottle and they still refused to let you have it, I suspect they're just looking to sell water and not have you keep refilling your vessel in the mens room. Or perhaps now that a tournament ref is suspected of having bludgeoned her husband to death with a coffee mug, your thermos looks a little more omenous.

So I can't even bring my own clear water bottles? Since I'm not a fan of $5 water, I'll hydrate before going.

Because it might be alcohol?

I remember while getting on a cruise ship a group behind us got busted for having two cases off water bottles that they had refilled with Vodka.

^^ they have no qualms about alcohol -- there are cocktail bars on the grounds -- but they'd certainly rather be the ones selling it to you.

so can i bring an unopened bottle of poland spring water? each person is allowed to bring one bottle right? or can i bring in my own plastic bottle? i have one of those plastic camelbak bottles with a filter. are those ok? if i can bring that then i dont even have to buy water at all.

i couldn't bring my bike bottle (in plastic) at the madrid open last year: they told me i could throw it on the players (and the nadal wasn't even playing that day !). but of course, throwing 5€ water bottles on the players is fine...

i hid it in a flower pot in front of the entrance while i was watching the matches.

Look, most restaurants (and the US Open is most certainly a restaurant, with tennis going on) won't let you bring your own food or beverages in. I think if people want to bring their own beverages in, there should be a corkage fee.

The comparison is not correct.

At the US Open the main product is the tennis. That is what they sell, when you buy tickets.

In a restaurant the main product is serving you food and wine.

If you bring your own wine in a restaurant, you are messing with their main product.

And, the restaurants, that allow their guests to bring their own wine, charge a cork fee, because someone is actuallly serving you your own wine and there are also secondary expenses, related to that.

Why is it OK, that they are forced to buy things outside the main product? What next? People being forced to buy sunscreen products at the venues? Or sunglasses?

^^ thanks for sharing. Try bringing a pizza into a movie theatre sometime. The theatres I go to stop you if they see you bringing in food or beverage, yet their "main product" is the movie, right? Wrong. They make more money from refreshments than they do from the movie. Likewise the US Open where someone spending a day there will likely spend as much on food and beverages than the cost of admission. If you think the US Open is not in the restaurant business, you are unconscious. (P.S. they're also in the clothing business. Have you seen the 60 dollar tee shirts they sell?)

I am well aware of the business logic of selling food, bevarages and fan paraphernalia on the grounds.

However, the reasons for not allowing you to bring your own water, are nothing short of shameless.

The food analogy is not relevant either. Water, especially in a hot weather, is a must. It can cost someone dear, if he refuses to buy water on the grounds, and is not allowed to bring his own.

I cannot relate to your example, as I do not go to movie theaters with a food in my hand.

Look, they are not allowing you to bring in water for your own saftey and the saftey of others.

Do you think they should risk you bringing in the wrong water? Perhaps sparkling water (which is dry and not thirst quenching).

If you just drink US Open approved water, everyone will be safe.

Nobody will die at the US Open for lack of water. You
can always suck on a spigot in the restroom, though I prefer to cup my hands, as you never know where that spigot's been.

Do they allow you to bring in your own shirt?

("Hey Mindy, I got us tickets to the US Open tomorrow. Now they have this weird policy, but I'm sure you'll be cool with it.........")

US Open security can't hold a candle to Disneyland. They let me bring in water, juice boxes, sandwiches, baby formula...you name it. 'Happiest place on Earth', indeed. :)

so...i guess that's a "no" then on bringing in water...

i'm gonna bring in a small bottle of poland spring water either way. i'm gonna be going to a night match on friday night so i guess i won't need that much water but still wanna have something to drink in case. if they make me throw it out, at most i'll just lose a buck.

Did you know that morocco was the first country in the world to recognize the independance of the USA?
The first drafts of the us constitution were written on morrocan paper made from canabis
