Wawrinka + Federer = Davis Cup 2009?

With Wawrinka on the rise (possibly top 15 by the end of year?) and Federer returning to the Swiss team for Davis Cup. Will Switzerland become one of the favorite to win Davis Cup 2009?

Wawrinka has beaten many quality players the last two seasons both on clay and hardcourt (Berdych, Nalbandian, Ancic, Murray, Safin, Baghdatis).

Warwrinka, despite the progress, is still a world class choker. He'll double fault on match point down quite often and needs to diversify his game, mix things up and no be afraid to come to net.

The Swiss need a quality third player, Allegro is good in doubles but to be a contender you really need at least 3 quality players.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but Fed ain't winning the DC with the current selection.

The Federer of 2004-2006 could win the Davis cup on his own.. This one needs backup, I agree. But they sure would be a contender. As long as they don't draw Spain away..

On clay they can be a danger to anyone except Spain. Well that being said, they are not in the world group at the moment and Wawrinka needs to step up with consistency for them to be a threat.

No they won't. France is another story. If Tsonga and Gasquet play their best tennis; they will make a really good team.

An exception does not a rule make. Plus Ancic and Ivan are a better doubles parring than Fed and Warwrinka. Seriously, Stan sucks at net, and I'm a huge fan of his.

Wawrinka is not a doubles player.Federer usually plays with Allegro in doubles

yeah and federer doesn't really play that much davis cup, granted if he actually played every tie, and warwrinka really dedicated himself, and through allegro in there, they have a chance, but it looks grim as of right now

yeah i would agree up there

stan isn't too comfortable at net

and i believe he is still a bit on the choke side as he failed to close murray out earlier in the 2nd set

but def. he is improving and i love to see him play his 1hb is a thing of beauty =]

Yeah, Wawrinka just broke into top 10 after his win over Roddick in Rome.

But I don't remember SUI having solid Men's Doubles.

hurrah! Full props to Wawrinka for exceeding my expectation already!

Federer and Allegro has always been a good doubles pair, they won some doubles titles together a while back.

if wawrinka can pull them through the first couple rounds and then federer sees it as convenient enough to play, they have a great shot, who knows though federer may not be the same player at that point, it would be over a year away and given where he is now compared to last year and the year before that...

If Switzerland doesn't draw Spain away, they got a chance against any team in the world. Wawrinka's been impressing me

Federer + Anyone = Davis Cup 09 title

Fed + Anyone vs :

Serbia on Hard. Chance for Serbia for sure. 30%
Spain on Clay. Chance for Spain 90%.
USA on fast hard court, chance for USA 45% ( due to fix doubles with Bryans, you guys need couple of wins over Wawrinka on HC where both blake and roddick can take him out, and most probably would )
Russia anywhere, Andeev, Safin ( whole different kind of anymal in Davis cup ), Youzhny and Davydenko, doubles would decide this unles Wawrinka surprises one of the guys, 35% to Russia.

Not a fix by any means.

Nope, yet the only time a switzerland with Roger Federer is the underdog would be Spain on clay. Even argentina on clay switzerland would be the favourite I think.

Jorel, thats how I rated it. If I say Serbia has the 30% chance, then Swiss are the favourites correct ?
