Wawrinka in an altercation with fan

I still don't get what happened. First of all the tournament director and a bunch of officials were about 10 feet away from the guy. Didn't they hear him? Why did Stan have to ask for something to be done?

When approached, the fan said "I didn't do anything wrong."

However, it seemed to be someone talking/taunting between Stan's first and second serve. If that was the case, and this was the guy, why didn't they boot him?

So lets take all you weekend warriors to the tennis court. Have you play for your months wages. And let fans court side heckle you between serves and see how you handle it.

It's so easy to judge and say that some one should handle a situation differently when you have no skin in the game (emotionally, financially, physically).

The fan should be removed. I'm with Stan on this one. And I think he handled the after match media great regarding this situation. And he didn't let it get in his head and he took care of the match.

please don't make this into a sob story for Warwinka

he's a millionaire several times over. him over-reacting shows he did let it get to him and was not focused throughout the entire match. he should have informed the umpire and let it be handled by officials.

theres been many pros who handled far worse from crowds in a much better fashion!

Good job Wawrinka. He should have added "fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son."

Djoker would have told the entire crowd to suck his trouser snake.

BTW unrelated but from the same match. The chair umpire (Armstrong) was real jerk and quite unprofessional with two really suspicious overrides against Belluci after he run out of challenges in the last set TB. Practically won the TB for Wawrinka - not that he really needed help, but still it was ugly to watch. It really looked like umpire waited for Belluci to run out of challenges and started overriding close balls against hims immediately to rub it off on the two very next points. How can this bad ridiculous umpiring be stopped?

Were you there (seated nearby)? Did you see and hear the ball-busting fan who didn't just start up at that moment but was antagonizing Wawrinka for an extended period of time leading up to the point where Stan told him where to get off? The guy was a know-nothing jerk.

Prior to that, Bellucci made some atrocious challenges to regroup himself and lost all challenges. So, why blame the umpire ? 4 challenges are not enough ?

I don't care if he's a millionaire x time over. Just because some one has money doesn't mean the should have to deal with crap like this.

I'm not making this a sob story for Warwinka. I am sticking up for his actions and effort. It's to easy for everyone else to sit behind their computer screens and make judgemental comments when they know nothing of the situation, the pressures or the amount of dedication these athletes put in to become one of the best at their craft.

Because overrules were ridiculous and unnecessary and likely wrong. He was obviously punishing Belluci and trying to send some kind of message. The moment Belluci run out of challenges in the TB, he overruled two very next points changing linesmen calls to be against Belluci. Umpire should not have that kind of effect on the match and points outcome.

I was there Dedans. The fan was actually TT's very own Amelie Mauresmo just telling Stan how much he loved him.

They showed the hawkeye of both of those points actually (for the audience since Bellucci could not challenge) and both overrules were correct.

Many pros deal with the pressures and dedication better than Warwinka did last night!

wonder what you were saying when Serena had her tirade

there was a better way to handle it; period, point, blank!

Warwinka has alot of endorsements now, he better learn how to deal with situations like these in a better fashion in the future...

Warwinka's situation was hardly a tirade. Way to compare apples to oranges. Shesh.

And so almost any situation can be handled better. Not saying he couldn't have handled it better. And I'm sure he will learn from the situation. What I am say, is that most armchair quarterback have no clue what a player is dealing with under those circumstance. And just because you think you would handle the situation better, doesn't mean you would if giving the same circumstances.

It's easy to critize from from the nosebleeds.

I've been surrounded by hillbillies my whole life and I can tell you that being nice doesn't get through to them. Even when the manager spoke to him the guy just went "what man I didn't do nothin' wrong!"

Wawrinka did the only thing he could do. The guy shut up out of fear of being further humiliated on national tv.

Did Stan just say 'shut up' or used some Novak Vocabulary ?

What doesn't become a headline these days. These guys are under a microscope. Having watched what happened I'd hardly say he did anything extreme. And he handled the media afterwards with humor and basically difused the situation. Calling it an altercation (Like the OP did) is just ridiculous.

I thought the balls were long as shown in the TV review?

Was he the bald guy or the guy next to him?

I am with you! Unfortunately on TV I could not hear what the guy said.
And DRII, telling a guy to "shut up, seriously shut up" is not overreacting in my book.

"Shut up, seriously, shut up." -Stan Wawrinka to a noisy fan. Boos followed, though not clear for whom. #USOpen

Disagree, what if this was a slam final and the heckling was affecting his play? clearly it was tonight to some so at what point do you say enough is enough...I've been to some aussie open night matches where we've been wondering what's taking so long for security to eject some of these losers..
tennis is a unique sport where fans are so close to the athletes....it should be cherished..

if he loses an endorsement..so what..that actually means nothing in the big picture here of how fans can interupt play.

a lot of Europeans hate the NY crowd. they consider them rude, with no manners and more importantly NO culture and class.

Exactly. Stan is far from the only guy (or woman) who gets heckled by some yahoo in the crowd.

That may be true but Stan has done this around the world, not just in NY. He often gets into screaming matches with the umpires, and he has had a bunch of run-ins with his opponent's coaches in the stands. Stan is not some angel who only had a temper tantrum just last night.

That might me an impression, but I do not agree. From what I can say as a TV spectator only (unfortunately), the ambiance at the US Open seems very cheerful, and vibrant. It seems special, for sure rather noisy, but not on a bad way. But the you get the occasional guy that comes into the spotlight for the wrong reasons, like the guy who got on Wawrinka's case! But you shouldn't throw the entire NYC crowd into the same bucket!
