wawrinka racquet retail or custom layup

The reason why I think it's a custom layup is because I saw a listing for his racquet and it was blacked out. I'm thinking he was using a blacked put frame to test diff layups like rf. If he was using a retail, there would be No need to paint the frame black.

He has to be using a diff layup right? Why else would he text a black prototype frame?
Not because of that. There could be other reasons why he would use blacked out racket.
With Head, he used 238.3 which was not the layup offered to the public (.1 = MP; .2 = Pro; .3 = Waw).

Did you ever hit with the 238.3? I kind of wondered what the 3 is as I know the .1, .2, .4 and .5. Is it just a variant of the Microgel Prestige?

If I would post pics of Wawrinka's racket (last years), would you be able to know if it is retail or custom? I should be able to take pics in 2 weeks or so!

Warinka's racket is way too heavy for anybody with less than 5.5 rating. so SW of his frame will make you hit late every time.
Better to just buy from TW with stock specs. most amateur's optimal SW is around 320

It doesn't really matter as he has a lot of lead at 3/9 that is visible - probably the Berdych setup with 12 grams at 3/9 so it's not going to play anything near any retail frame unmodified. Given the kind of shots that he hits and the amount of lead there, the SW is probably way up there.

I think I know which listing are you talking about...Listing you saw was for 97tour vcore blacked out supposedly wawrinkas I spoke with the owner and he is basically not even sure and cannot confirm it's his...
...basically whom ever sold him the racquet told him that it was wawrinka test racquet never used in match...also specs were way off from last known Stan specs which can happen when changing frames but unlikely IMHO...

In match play Stan is using 95d mold 100%

right we don't even really know what he has. All these guys that say he has 95d are speaking from 2nd hand information source. They have never really seen or touched or examined his racket 1st hand......LOL

And yes I think that is the same listing, however, he has been spotted using a blacked out yonex for a while. So my idea is he was testing out a layup.

The mold is a 95d forsure

Hi Nostradamus. Do you think sw is important?

Thanks for the pictures and stats. Looks like 5 inches of lead, single-layer for 5 grams total at 3/9. Berdych uses two layers of six-inch tape for 12 grams at 3/9. That makes sense given one-hander vs two-hander. Is there any lead under the bumper at 12?

@movdqa: nothing I can see under the bumper... Any way to know for sure without damaging anything?

@art art: I don't know unfortunately. I will try to figure out the balance point, bug swingweight will have to wait.

@niktub... Will do, when I get around to it

You can lift the sides of sum grommets to see under them. I have no idea whether you can do this with Yonex racquet. BP and SW would be great to know. It would be a lot of fun knowing what Wawa is really using and how it compares to other top pros.

Frinton, it sure looks like a 95D. Could you measure the beam width? An accurate measurement could all but confirm that it's a 95D mold.

@Niktub - it looks to be 32.2 or 32.3...by my not super scientific measuring method :-? I hope that helps

I also added some pics of the grip

...the dark spot makes me think that Stan uses 2 overgrips and they just removed one before adding the signature...so that would change balance and swingweight a bit.

I added some more pics to the album here https://plus.google.com/photos/11177...CIv2kprN2eSkTw

...I will see if I can figure out SW at some point...

He wraps the overgrip pretty close which adds thickness.
Yep thats a lot of overlap and with a second OG to flare up butt. Yonex, please do something to the shape of the butt.

It's crazy, I had to resort using Wilson buttcaps to replace the Yonex ones.

Here we go - some pics of Stan's racket (2013).

The only other Yonex I had that I could compare it to was a RD-8, which is marked as a 95 head size, so Stan's clearly looks smaller than that.

Let me know if you want pics of something specific.

The racket weighs 372g on my kitchen scale. More pics here: https://plus.google.com/photos/111778561398581771386/albums/6006965116448929905?authkey=CIv2kprN2eSkTw
Looks hell lot like the 95D. The microcore bulge is evidently missing.

Since when has he used a second OG? I'm pretty sure that P1 just puts a piece of thin-width medical tape around the buttcap to make it more pronounced.

I matched both Stan's racquet and the actual 95D on Photoshop. They are a perfect fit. Have a look.
Hopefully we can put this to rest. Stan uses a 95D mold, but possibly with a different layup.

Reference photos.

Quick go buy the remaining 95D stock before they all run out.

it may just be me, but does the top of the head of Stan's racquet look slightly more rectangular than that of the 95D? :-?

Just look at the first picture I have posted. I layered them one on top of the other on photoshop. They fit perfectly. The strings, grommets, etc...

That mark doesn't necessarily mean that he's using an overgrip though. I've gotten marks on my grips like that and I only use one overgrip.
I am just basing on what he has said, after all he's the one with the racquet.

And it does look like it.

Well, I do not have any other idea why that mark should be there, but the 2nd over grip was just my best guess. Any other explanation might be as valid.

@frinton: can you try the TW method to check the swingweight ?

Does it feel light/heavy over the air ? Can you estimate only by feeling the SW ?

Thank's

Not a big issue to be honest. There could have been 2 more layers of OG on it for all I care.

The racquet is THE topic here, not the OG. So, did you have a hit with it? Or is that going to be part of your wall collection?

I'm super curious about that swingweight haha. I suspect high 350's low 360's.. he swings it like it's a beast frame.

Hi Corners - 21mm at 9 o'clock, 20mm in the middle of the throat area and again 21mm just where the grip starts. i hope that helps. oh, and my measuring method is not very scientific, I am afraid...so accuracy wont be 100% ;-)

and by the way, I tried to paek under the bumper again and there seems to be something underneath around 12 o'clock.

I have 95d and if you add 2 10in strips at 12 basically along the bumper, add 5.25 in (yes 5.25 cause thats what measures out to be from 5th top to 5th bottom up cross string) lead tape at 3 and 9 swap for leather grip you are exactly at 372 strung ~ 32cm bal

Off course since specs tolerances are what they are your mileage might change so you might need to add some lead here and there but IMHO thats how wawi's sticks are set up

PS In my case I used 16 gauge Cyclone and Babolat leather grip so I cant imagine weight of Waerinkas strings and leather hrip to be too far off...

The mystery remains, though - why discontinue a stick that was very popular and still used by YY's top player? The only thing I can think of is that the 95D, which seemed to hurt a lot of elbows in stock form, needs to be weighted up to truly arm safe.

Call me skeptic but I don't think manuf. take middle age men and women arm safety into consideration when deciding what to keep and what to nix.

BUT I experienced the same thing I felt vibrations from the racquet that bothered my hand not my elbow as much but after lead and leather nothing...even plush feeling coming from something stiffer...

I was told by a rep that it is real stuff except his racket is bit heavier and balance is different than stock
