Sideline coaching in Tennis is like pulling shirt on a football field. I just don't know why the governing body bothers to have rules if they don't enforce the rules.

Personally, I don't like grey-shade rule like illegal side-line coachin in which the crime is debatable and is left to the umpire's discretion. They might as well legalize coaching (like Davis Cup) to remove the distraction. Legalize coaching might increase quality of match play but might also decrease the character of the player.

How much coaching can he really donwith hand signals to give him an advantage. Wawrinka dominated him and still lost won 83 to 80 and had almost double the winners

How many buffoons in this thread saying Stan is a sore loser?

He complained about it during the match, and was later asked about it.

A sore loser wouldn't tweet congratulations to his opponent for becoming the year end no.1.

Second bold part gives "good" credibility to your post.

Match result notwithstanding, coaching is not allowed. And if a player raises it during the match, then it certainly was beyond reasonable tolerant proportions.

This match was extremely important for your boy - it sealed YE no. 1 from him. Hence, Tony was desperate beyond doublt in this match and it showed up.

A guy who is charged in his own country for tax fraud.

And the funny part is, half of massagers from mallorca are saying "it does not matter" or "who cares" or best of all attacking Fed for illegal coaching - funniest of all actually. BlunderTrolley asked Stan to "grow a pair".

Where there's smoke there's fire. This issue comes up too much from too many directions...opposing players, fans, commentators, etc. There is something to it.

Does it diminish Nadal's accomplishments? Not really for me, but I think it perhaps does take a little away from him in some way.

People can say all they want about Stan manning up, but he was simply stating a fact and how he felt about it. From what I can see, he wasn't trying to make an excuse. And, despite what people want to say or believe, it could be an advantage for Nadal. In the heat of battle, an extra set of eyes that is getting a great overview of the match could give some key advice or remind you of something you were neglecting in the moment.

It shouldn't have to be excessive. It is against the Rules of Tennis! If it happens once it should be punished. If it happens excessively it is cheating, plain and simple. Cheating. Rafa Nadal is a cheater. What difference is there, really, between this and doping? In both cases, a player breaks the rules to gain a competitive advantage over his opponent. This is horrible. Look at Wawrinka, playing his heart out today and losing to a player who he sees, over and over again throughout the match, cheating in plain sight. Why is this allowed? Why is Toni Nadal allowed to continually break this rule, one of the oldest in our sport? Why is it that he can publicly confess to doing this, as he did a couple months ago, and the authorities not stop him from continuing to do it?

Imagine Laver, Rosewall, Sampras, any of the former greats, looking to their coaches for help during their matches. It's inconceivable! This is a sport for sportsman who can stand on their own two feet and defeat their opponent, all alone, with no one to help them. This is a sport for men, men who would die of shame to cheat, to show such weakness, such lack of character, simply to win a tennis match. Rafa Nadal, by continuing to allow his uncle to coach him from the stands, is proving himself to be not a man, but a babe, lost without his surrogate daddy to handhold him to victory. Mental toughness? That's what Rafa is most known for. But does he really have it? Or is he getting it through the coaching he receives? How soothed he must feel to hear his uncle's voice in the tensest moments. Other players falter on break point, but not Rafa. Why would he, with his uncle and coach there to tell him just what to do when the pressure is at its greatest?

I remember Wilander once saying that Rafa is the smartest player on tour, based on the evidence that he changes his game to win matches more than any other player. Is he the one who really so smart, so shrewd, such a cool-headed tactician? Or is it his uncle, continually whispering in his ear?

I like Rafa, and felt proud of him today when he clinched #1 after being out with injury for so long. But after reading these comments by the opponent he beat to accomplish this feat, I feel ashamed for him. The ITF and ATP need to put a stop to this. Through their cheating, Rafa and his uncle bring shame to the entire sport and history of tennis.

30. COACHING
Coaching is considered to be communication, advice or instruction of any kind, audible or visible, to a player.

Case 1: Is a player allowed to be coached, if the coaching is given by signals in a discreet way?

The court is so completely dark durin the match. How could Rafa see what Toni was trying to say. I couldn't see anyone in the crowd during the Games.
Can anyone tell me at what point in 2nd set Stan complained? I think I missed it.

Seriously...how often does Nadal hit more winners than his opponent when it is one of the top guys? His game is defense and consistency, forcing you to hit winners but making the margin for doing so razor thin, which typically means an opponent with twice the winners also has 4 times the unforced errors. Net win for Nadal.

Stan cannot beat Nadal or any of the others because he doesn't believe he can. Simple as that. Ability-wise he has the game to beat anyone, but if you don't believe it it is unlikely to happen. He could win a slam if he more confidence in himself. Lost to Djokovic 12-10 in the fifth...7-6, 7-6 to Nadal today. Pure game-wise, he ranks right there, IMO.

Wawrinka had more tougher losses than this one, including the heart breaking AO against Nole. Why didn't Stan accuse Nole for on court coaching? Because it never happened, unlike Nadal he's custom to on court coaching, and even got fined for it. Wawrinka is not lying...he speaks the truth.

Stan was just mad because he knew he was heading for straight set loss #12 in a row.

Oh, and those inept cameramen who can't ever seem to catch a glimpse of Nadal even glancing towards the stands, or Toni saying anything.

Stan is a big, pouty baby, mad because he can't win.
 
Very bad rule breaking behavior, which we all know is quite characteristic for Nadal and Tony.
It is good that more and more players are noticing and raising voice against it.
It is now up to the officials to stop it. Enough is enough.
 
OMG...I'm watching the match now. I don't know what happened today.....

But the announcers said that warwinka has never taken even one set off Nadal!!???

He sounds a but frustrated.

Most likely the opposite... Rafa got SLAMMED AND BULLIED BAD by Wawrinka's BH in this match, Wawrinka missed more on the FH side at crucial points though, and that freakish stumble that prevented him from closing the second set with an easy volley :-)

I can't remember the tournament, but he went to the restroom during a rain break, and the commentator was saying that he wasn't allowed to talk to his coach. This is what they said on ESPN, but later on the TTC, they were talking about Cahill, I think it was, who they said talked to Federer on the rain break.

That's why I watch both broadcasts, because they cross fact check each other.

Keep thinking that Federer doesn't "cheat," lol.

If Rafa was "cheating" there is no reason on earth that the players wouldn't band together to stop it.

Why on earth would the entire tour give him a free pass?

Look the speed limit is 55 mph right ?

But people drive 65 mph all the time ....so it's in effect allowed.

If the umps don't stop it then it's allowed the same as driving 65 mph .

I know you are allowed to talk to people during the rain break but not during bathroom break.

Wow how typical of bias Nadal fan's defensive response. Do you realize while blaming Stan not closing it out you admitted the mental aspect of tennis? Everyone plays a little bit tennis knows the mental part is HUGE. Yet you say Toni's coaching has no part of the mental game.
 
I can't believe Nadal fans are accusing Wawrinka and trying to justify Nadal's and Tony's inappropriate and illegal behavior.

I think the fact that in 27 sets that Stan didn't even take one set off Rafa is what is mentally bothering Stan......

But that's not only my opinion that's also the sportscasters' opinions .

The commentator said that they talked over the phone. I wish I had written it down, or could keep up with the notes that I do write, but like I said, I listen to both broadcasts and they're worlds apart on many issues.

What was funny was TTC commentator wasn't trying to rat anyone out. He just didn't know what had been said on ESPN.

I'm actually going to make me a tennis journal to keep up with this stuff.

For example, when Sorana played Serena recently, Cahill was caught on tape repeatedly giving her instructions during the match, but he is a good one to try to call someone else out.

I was wondering if anyone would mention it on the board, but they never did, and I just laughed to myself.

If you listen to Stan, it is like everyone except Rafa/Toni is doing 65; and the Rafa team is doing 110.

"Toni is always trying to help Rafa. That's normal. That's part of the game. But when it's too much, it's too much."

I like Wawrinka. He is a solid guy who played great in the USO by beating Murray and pushing Djokovic to the limit. He would not lie after the match.
