Greater is an easy question IMO. It's Wawrinka. But I don't think he's much better, if at all. Simply because even the Stanimal of 2013+ never would've won slams in Federer's prime years because of a bad match up. And he wouldn't have a RG either. He only won one of those when a relatively old Nadal was in a slump which never happened to young Nadal. Plus, even if by a miracle the young Nadal stumbled ala 2015-16, a younger Federer would still be like an 80/20 favourite on clay.

In hindsight, the Wimby 09 Final loss hurts Roddick a lot here. With a 2 slam gap it's basically impossible for Roddick to win the greatness stakes, but a second slam and a win over Federer on grass and still pretty much in his prime on top of it would've tipped the scales quite a lot.

Thanks to Djoker not being able to handle wawa in finals. Take away those two matches and Roddick is on another level.

beat Murray at 2013 UO
beat Nadal at 2014 AO
beat Federer at 2015 RG
pushed Federer to the 5th at 2017 AO
beat Murray at 2017 RG

Wawrinka faced more of Djokovic and Nadal though.

Hewitt-Murray-Grasserer sure isn't less tough than Djokovic-Berdych-injured!Nadal or old!Clayerer-Tsonga-Djokovic. Potential USO 2007 was even tougher, Federer-Davydenko-Djokovic. Of course lost to Fed straight away, but ya know, fedr goat etc.

3 slams to 1. It's pretty obvious isn't it? Besides... Roddick went out like a punk. Retired way to early. Federer destroyed his mental state with those three Wimbledon Final wins. He completely broke Roddick. Sad.

Talking generally not just a select few draws. Roddick was unluckier in his greatest forms at slams sure.

take away all of wawrinka's epic slam runs and what are you left with but a glorified dan evans

think about it
I thought about it. Evo did not convert MP vs Slaminal and thus allowed the legend in slam finals to progress. Slaminal>>> Evo.

Wawa only leads in the slam count, everything else A-Rod is ahead....so they're pretty even in my books.
Now just waiting for Lew to post their overall H2Hs vs the Big 3.

In H2H it is 3:1 for Wawrinka. It seems that Roddick retired 2 times against Wawrinka as he was unfortunate to simultaneously suffer from common coughing cold, anthrax and SARS. As someone said "He's either quick to call the trainer or he's the most courageous guy of all time.”

Slam R16/QF/SF/F against Big4 --> Roddick 12, Wawrinka 24

Roddick wouldn't even make 4 slam finals in the peak of Big4. He'd be another Berdych/Tsonga/Ferrer.

Hmm, on one side you have one of the most useless players in the history, the serve and push kamikaze approach choker, and on the other side you have the CYGS disrupter, Germanic hero who managed to prevail over the tennis Goliath, the Stanimal himself. What a dilemma! o_O

Two of those wins Roddick withdrew with injury, so go figure. Anyways I meant Wawrinka's H2H vs Big 3, and Roddick's H2H vs Big 3.

It's all about the Slams. @Mainad

That seems to be the consensus on here as the numerous ATG threads make clear. For the Slams-Are-All brigade, Stan is halfway to being an ATG whilst Roddick is barely out of the blocks. Stan wins hands down.

For the Whole-Career-Matters believers (which includes me), Roddick's many more overall titles and consistency of ranking especially reaching #1 points to him as having the greater career.

Given Stan's remarkable Slam achievements versus Roddick's overall more productive career I voted for them as being even in the greatness stakes.

Don't see either as an ATG as I believe you need to at least reach number one at some point in a 15 year career to be considered an ATG.

However, slams are needed, and I think 3 slams puts you in that category if you have reached number one... hence, Murray.

Roddick got destroyed. I'll apologize to him later for creating this thread.
