That's why weeks at number 1 don't paint the full story in terms of taking into account level of competition. The extra slam and the difficulty of those slams does it for me for Wawrinka. Even though Safin was the more "Complete" player

In between 2013 and 2016 when Wawrinka played his best he lost to one of big three in 6 slams, 3 WTF semis i think and 9 masters. All in later stages.
And he won his 3 slams and 1 master by going through them. In AO he took out Djokovic and Rafa.
And in RG Djokovic and Federer. And in USO Djokovic and Del-Potro. That's beating two event champions for each slam win (including two wins against the defending champion). His wins are very high quality.

Wawrinka has one slam more, but two of his finals were against injured and obviously underperforming players. Safin won one against 4 times champion, number one, still in his 20s Sampras, in straight sets, and the other against peak Roger Federer.

Stan beat 3 time defending AO champ Djokovic 9-7 in the 5th in that thrilla from Manilla heavyweight fight while on his way to a slam
Oh and Djokovic was red hot going into that match on a 28 match win streak(13-0 vs top 10) winning 2 masters, Davis Cup and a WTF

Stan "I'll never beat Fed on HC" Wawrinka is leading this poll now? Ugh, talk about recency bias. I give him full credit for his AO win, but his other 2 slams were flukey. No Ned at RG and no Fed at the USO. He can't even beat RaoMUG at the AO and you think he'd have had a prayer against PETE? Pff. Safin should be winning this easily.

Yes, in the quarterfinals, the other one is also against Djokovic, the no tittle mentally not too strong in finals there Novak at Roland Garros.

Oh and Safin has more masters and the number one position.

???
Djokovic going into that Rolland Garros had won 4 masters already in 2015, was also holding Wimbledon and AO title and after losing to Wawrinka goes on to win 4 slams in a row

While your bud Safin lost to aging Pete who retired soon after
And he held no. 1 in the era when bunch of nobodies held no 1
Pretty good player but Stan achieved more vs greater competition.
Plus won 3 different slams and had many deep slam runs.

Djokovic in Roland Garros finals before that. I hope it is more clear now.

Safin is not my bud. And Pete was playing in front of his home crowd, at the event he won multiple times before that, only a year older than Djokovic in Paris, won the same event two years later. Lost in straight sets. Marat played a kind of tennis that is very, very hard to beat, if you haven't seen the match I am sure there are at least some highlights on YouTube. Stanislas did not achieve more, just one slam more and we explained how. Safin had as deep as semi-finals runs at every slam, unlike Wawrinka.

Djokovic in RG finals faced the grand daddy of clay tennis, Nadal and yet put up decent resistance.
Sampras age can't be compared to Djokovic, Pete got outclassed by Hewitt next year and then had one more memorable run a year later and retired. Djokovic went on to produce best 12 months in ATP history after that loss to Stan. And 5 years later he is still winning slams.

By decent resistance you mean doublefaulting on the match point? Twice.

Sampras got outclassed by Hewitt because of his infamous stamina problems, his schedule was too much for him that year(2001 that is).

Their 2014 match had nothing in quality on their 2013 match, which is a worthy rival to 2005 SF.

Querrey goat btw, stooped ncygsovic no?

Definitely not. First two sets were mediocre at best. 2005 first two sets were very good, if not quite legendary (but still better first two sets than most ATG matches). Sets 3-4 about equal (obviously I prefer 2005 due to styles) and 5th set clearly to 2005.

Stan goated until he had to serve for a two set lead though. Novack doesn't make too much of a difference eh? :p

Can't say 5th set is clear either, at least 2013 didn't feature a DF on BP lol.

Safin. Better career overall. But wawa better peak.
pretty sure its the opposite man. safin's peak is unbeatable. wawa had better career, more quarter/semi appearances, most time in top 10. the fact safin was #1 proves higher peak. fact wawrinka longer in top 10 proves better career

Lets make it simple:
Peak Safin would lose peak Wawrinka only in one GS - its name is Roland Garros.
In Wimbledon Marat would win. In USO, AO Marat would destroy Stan.
Note: we talk about peak Safin vs peak Wawrinka

but it's about who is greater not who had better peak...take a closer look

I don't think that Wawrinka is greater than Safin. I'm just so amazed by his comeback in the poll.

Another measurement of "greatness": Did a player leave any influences to the future generations of players?

Examples: Fed/Nadal/Nole can claim so.

I think there are at least 2-3 future 1HBH GS winners who have practiced with Stan will say so in the future.

OK... What pot am I smoking?? I am way too optimistic :)
