We are screwed ... the Pickleballers are coming

Doubles tennis is more efficient use of court space than singles. Should doubles have priority?
First of all, multiple people have been quoting that and only that and assuming that my whole argument breaks down if you break that down, when it doesn't. That was just one of the things I said.

And it actually isn't more efficient monetarily, depending on how you charge for court time. If you charge by the court/hour, doubles and singles is the exact same revenue-wise, while pickleball is twice as efficient because there's two courts on each tennis court that you can charge for. If it is free, it depends on the community and the purpose of the courts. If it is to get as many people playing on the courts as possible, then yes, doubles would have priority. However, that is not realistic, so it doesn't happen, even though it is more efficient.

Forget pickleball and tennis, let's just start promoting outdoor table tennis as the space-efficient sport of the future!!! :)

Anyone else see the irony of 60 year old BBP railing against pickleball, and 24 year old Bagel defending it? I'm old enough to get away with playing (or teaching) pb. At 24, Bagel should be so ashamed he is losing sleep.

We should invoke some penalties on young Bagel for his misguided ways. I will go first:

1) for every hour of pb lessons, he (she?) has to hit with a tennis student for an hour for free. I get the first hour ... I want an hour of cc to my 2hbh.

Two solutions to combat the Pickleball invasion:

1. Let seniors play triples. Yes, 3 players per side.
I've seen some super seniors already do this. It is easier on their body and they still have tons of fun.
Plus tennis retailers will be happy, selling 3 rackets instead of 1 or 2, selling 3 pairs of shoes instead of 1 or 2, etc.

If step 1 does not work:
2. Place a ping pong table on every pickleball court. See video below:

You find yourself in my neck of the woods and you got it. The first hour I teach pickleball now I'll give you an hour hitting with me for free.

That will help keep seniors in tennis, but the majority of pickleball players are not being stolen from tennis. While this solves the movement issue, it does not solve the issue of the ease of hitting the ball and the ease of swinging the paddle that makes pickleball a very attractive option for non-tennis players to try.

I have already thought of the solution ... not more players ... anything short of service line after serve is out. We will have to bring tape for alley. :p

I thought of the solution ... get rid of high school football.

High school football $:

90% - teachers
9% - tennis courts
1% - pickleball courts

Problem solved.

Good job ... I did not see it. I was friends with one of John Denver's cousins in college. I lived in a dorm the first two years, and he was on my dorm floor second year. Every Friday and Saturday night before heading out to party, he demanded we all listen to the following (claimed it helped him get into game mode to meet girls :p).

Not much pickleball in Australia here as yet. There's been a little bit of it but it has a long way to go before it has any impact.
That's not to say that tennis people should not rest on their laurels with their own game, and judging by what the ITF have said, the next 15 years will be some changes starting off course with what they are going with Davis Cup for instance.
From a space point of view, you can certainly make a lot more money from this sought of thing because you get more people playing in a small area like you do in futsal.

There is no pickleball at my club. The space that the pickleball people used at my club has been taken over by daycare operations of kids from 2 to 5. That's fine with me.

Watching pickleball is terrible. They have taken all the athleticism out of tennis. To me pickleball is almost like a cross between tennis and pool. It's great for someone like me because you don't have to move. But its not much of a workout and it takes little athleticism. People compare it to ping pong but high level ping pong guys need quick feet.. And you can still smack ping pong balls out of the air and down on the table..

Pickleball is a pastime for people too old and immobile to play tennis. Guess what there are a lot of people like that. Heck almost every person is like that in the US - outside of HS kids and few athletes that can still run.

But the good news - pickleball is hella easy for any even mediocre tennis player.

The people I see playing pickleball are all 50s to 80s.

Yeah its a great past time for seniors. There are tons of seniors. It's a growth hobby for sure. Jimmy Connors could play pickleball and be good at it - even though he can't move anymore..

Never seen anyone play pickleball in the UK, good job because if they were playing that on the court next to me, I would be laughing my arse off. They look f**king ridiculous. If it ever comes to the UK, I am going to have 4 angry pensioners beat me to death with their paddles.

The reason that pretty much only seniors play this pseudo-sport is because their hearing is bad enough to tolerate the loud sound.
Actually, there are now a ton of players in their 20s, 30s an 40s in this (SF Bay) area. The better players were former collegiate or junior tennis players. Not just a game for the geriatric set any more. A lot of the high schools in the area have been teaching pickleball in the past 2+ decades. Much easier to learn than tennis. More of a game for the masses (like table tennis).

Have played outdoor table tennis quite a few times in the past 10+ months. Pickleball, only once. The issue with outdoor TT is that even a moderate wind is too much. Not as much of an issue for pickleball.

They’ve taken over some of the tennis courts near me. Seems unfair as courts are already hard to get. I wouldn’t be able to play frisbee golf on a golf course. I mean the sport looks fun for the older crowd but need to figure out a way to build their own courts.

Pickleball is not table tennis. It takes a lot more skills to play table tennis.

I don't understand why people hat pickleball so much. From what I've seen on ESPN2 the other night, those pickleball athletes looked amazing to me. I am sure most of you in this forum are also tennis "hacks". You don't have to have Djokovic's skill to enjoy playing tennis.

I don't have to have the skill of Brooks Koepka in order to enjoy playing golf.

It is XL table tennis. Tennis would take a lot less skill if you had oversize rackets and beach balls.

Lets see. Annoying sound. Encroaches on tennis court space. Takes parks and rec budget from tennis.

If you want tennis to die, promote pickleball.

I have no problem with pickleball as a game. It's impact on my ears and on tennis is what bothers me.

You should bring that issue to your county or city council. They should 1: build more tennis and pickball courts; 2: raise your sale, property, city taxes.
