We have to adjust Major totals for analysis since the AO was hardly played in the past

The Big 3 and Sampras have accrued lots of Majors, but we forget that most of the greats pre-1990 didn't play the AO much at all. Removing AO titles from discussion actually creates a much better list of greats:

Men's Greats including AO:
  1. Rafael Nadal: 22
  2. Novak Djokovic: 21
  3. Roger Federer: 20
  4. Pete Sampras: 14
  5. Roy Emerson: 12
  6. Rod Laver: 11
  7. Bjorn Borg: 11
  8. Jimmy Connors: 8
  9. Ivan Lendl: 8
  10. Andre Agassi: 8
  11. John Newcombe: 7
  12. John McEnroe: 7
  13. Mats Wilander: 7
  14. Stefan Edberg: 6
  15. Boris Becker: 6
Men's Greats minus AO:
  1. Rafael Nadal: 20
  2. Roger Federer: 14
  3. Pete Sampras: 12
  4. Novak Djokovic: 12
  5. Bjorn Borg: 11
  6. Rod Laver: 8
  7. Jimmy Connors: 7
  8. John McEnroe: 7
  9. Ivan Lendl: 6
  10. Roy Emerson: 6
  11. John Newcombe: 5
  12. Andre Agassi: 4
  13. Mats Wilander: 4
  14. Stefan Edberg: 4
  15. Boris Becker: 4
The second list feels pretty accurate, aside from Agassi and Laver being underrated, but the CGS for each makes up for it.

Women's Greats including AO:
  1. Margaret Court: 24
  2. Serena Williams: 23
  3. Steffi Graf: 22
  4. Chris Evert: 18
  5. Martina Navratilova: 18
  6. Billie Jean King: 12
  7. Monica Seles: 9
  8. Evonne Goolagong: 7
  9. Justine Henin: 7
  10. Venus Williams: 7
  11. Martina Hingis 5
  12. Maria Sharapova: 5
Women's Greats minus AO:
  1. Steffi Graf: 18
  2. Chris Evert: 16
  3. Serena Williams: 16
  4. Martina Navratilova: 15
  5. Margaret Court: 13
  6. Billie Jean King: 11
  7. Venus Williams: 7
  8. Justine Henin: 6
  9. Monica Seles: 5
  10. Maria Sharapova: 4
  11. Evonne Goolagong: 3
  12. Martina Hingis: 2
The second list for the women also feels pretty close, whereas I'd say BJK and Venus feel slightly overrated while Margaret Court and Monica Seles feel underrated.

TOTAL NONSENSE! The AO and FO have been just as competitive as Wimbledon and USO since the mid eighties. The French, long before the AO. I would discount the men's amateur slams before 68 but not the women's as there was no pro tour for the ladies before 68

Also do without Wimbledon since many players used to skip and even boycotted it.

Let’s really adjust and focus on the one truly important slam.

Men’s greats

1. Federer: 8
2. Sampras & Djokovic: 7

we can ignore the rest

Lol. This is the perfect response to a thread like this, plus it's true. Djokovic, Serena and Steffi all have something in common looking at this. I wonder if anyone else noticed it...

What a sadly transparent attempt to lower Djokovic to Federer's level.

Seems right to me.

Sampras, Federer, Navratilova and Serena are the Apex Predators on the fast courts.

I wish people would quit with the “AO isn’t up with the other 3 Slams” mantra when that’s just completely untrue unless you’re talking about the 1980’s. The top players all go there now, the prize money is actually respectable, etc.

I would actually put forth an argument that it’s generally had the toughest draws of the four Slams over the last twenty years.

why not add in the WCT finals and the grand slam cup - if you are taking out the AO

In truth the AO only had a weak field - 1970, 1972-1982. That is only 12 times out of 52 years. Hence 40 were ok.

We should add YEC. We forget that all the greats since early 70s valued it highly.

Federer: 26
Djokovic: 26
Nadal: 21 + *
Sampras: 19

This list looks very accurate. Sampras may be underrated a bit, but the ownage of the whole 90s tour makes up for it.

Def or about 0.75 a slam for sure 1 YEC.

More like "we have to adjust majors totals for analysis because AO was hardly played in the past" because I'm a Nadal fan and I dislike Djokovic and Federer. Am I right?;)

I think the 2nd list of both ATP and WTA are spot on. The Australian even as recently as the noughties didnt get the same strength of field as the other three. I have always felt Graf and Evert best female players i had seen
Sampras and Agassi skipped Australia numerous times. Not sure Borg ever played it.

Borg played once. He was down there for Davis Cup so played it as a practice for DC I believe

87-89 Miami was 128, all Bo5 matches. Mecir, Wilander, Lendl won.

75-78 USOs were Bo3 for Rounds 1-3 and Vilas won 77 when it was R1-4 Bo3.

Wilander +1 to 8.
Lendl +1 to 9.
Vilas loses 1.
Connors loses 2.

  14. Stefan Edberg: 6
  15. Boris Becker: 6
Men's Greats minus AO:
  1. Rafael Nadal: 20
  2. Roger Federer: 14
  3. Pete Sampras: 12
  4. Novak Djokovic: 12
  5. Bjorn Borg: 11
  6. Rod Laver: 8
  7. Jimmy Connors: 7
  8. John McEnroe: 7
  9. Ivan Lendl: 6
  10. Roy Emerson: 6
  11. John Newcombe: 5
  12. Andre Agassi: 4
  13. Mats Wilander: 4
  14. Stefan Edberg: 4
  15. Boris Becker: 4
The second list feels pretty accurate, aside from Agassi and Laver being underrated, but the CGS for each makes up for it.

Women's Greats including AO:
  1. Margaret Court: 24
  2. Serena Williams: 23
  3. Steffi Graf: 22
  4. Chris Evert: 18
  5. Martina Navratilova: 18
  6. Billie Jean King: 12
  7. Monica Seles: 9
  8. Evonne Goolagong: 7
  9. Justine Henin: 7
  10. Venus Williams: 7
  11. Martina Hingis 5
  12. Maria Sharapova: 5
Women's Greats minus AO:
  1. Steffi Graf: 18
  2. Chris Evert: 16
  3. Serena Williams: 16
  4. Martina Navratilova: 15
  5. Margaret Court: 13
  6. Billie Jean King: 11
  7. Venus Williams: 7
  8. Justine Henin: 6
  9. Monica Seles: 5
  10. Maria Sharapova: 4
  11. Evonne Goolagong: 3
  12. Martina Hingis: 2
The second list for the women also feels pretty close, whereas I'd say BJK and Venus feel slightly overrated while Margaret Court and Monica Seles feel underrated.
Interesting.
You want to make it fair for earlier ATGs when comparing them with Sampras, and the Big 3. But AO or not, the same 4 players are ranked top 4. They just shuffled among themselves. So do you have a different agenda or do you have a different agenda?

but then if you adjust it further like taking into account of a weak current era, roofs on show courts, 32 seeds instead of 16 and court homogenisation etc then Fedalovic won’t be at the top

This whole concept is absurd. It only occurs for about the first 15 years of Open Era, which now lasts 54 years altogether, with all Slams being equally important for decades now. So how long should this "only 3 Slams" view last then? Until the Open Era is 100 years long? Or even 200?

These days the Australian Open often is better contested than the US Open, because it's the start of the season and everyone is fresh and motivated.

I think you meant, Yes, "but then". Thank you for agreeing with me.

The Big 3 are on the very top no matter how you bend or bend the narrative. And I don't believe for a second that you guys have a problem with Fedalovic. You have a problem with Djokovic. And the most convenient way is to trash AO.

Just take a look at what the OP did here. Novak went from 2nd to 4th (although he tied with Pete for 3rd place, isn't that subtle). They are still at the top. But for the sake of Laver and Borg, AO should be taken out when comparing the Big 3. Genius.

Men's Greats including AO:
  1. Rafael Nadal: 22
  2. Novak Djokovic: 21

Hey, it’s not his fault that Djokovic’s resume is loaded with the least prestigious Major (AO) as well as the least prestigious Masters+ event (Paris). It’s a big weakness.

Also Djoko is on 20 slams currently. Wimpy didn't count this year of course since some top players were banned

All things considered you can't put Fedalovic on top. Doesn't matter when Djoko gets his 26th slam. The era is so weak that it devalues Djokos slams, especially the last 14-16 of them

A lot of amazing athletes never pursued tennis:

Bo Jackson -. 0
Michael Jordan - none
Michael Phelps - Zilch ...

A lot of people died without ever playing tennis, but they certainly would have had GOAT potential.

Pottery maker in ancient Rome - 37 slams
Caveman stick guy - 29 slams
16th century peasant - 17 slams
