Well done Naomi

I think pressers are mandatory for the players
I am assuming that Naomi has got some sort of "Mental Doctor's Note" that the French Open organizers have accepted. If so, those ambitious doctors are about to set a new precedent in tennis and for pro athletes in general.

I think she just doesn’t like doing press events and the “protest” aspect is just cover to skip them whilst indulging in some virtue signaling.

It's pretty normal to have to give press conferences after matches in any kind of sports. Also outside of sports. Think of politics. Or in the movie business where actors give press conferences. It's also a very common thing that the person giving the press conference is annoyed by dumb questions from the interviewers. It's all part of the game.

I do think it's cool that she's doing this. I like how she does her own thing, and doesn't seem to give two sh1ts about what others think of her. She does it in a classy way as well. But, I just don't agree with her that there's anything inherently wrong with press conferences.

She's not good on clay and does not want to answer uncomfortable questions.

Linking her petulance and self entitlement issues to 'mental health' concerns demeans people with real issues. Even those with mental health issues are advised and counselled on how to handle pressure/trigger situations and it's NOT by avoiding the so-called trigger

You get fined if you give an honest reply to a reporter. Everyone says the same bs. Complimenting their opponent instead of saying I should have beat this guy easily, etc.
You should be able to say, that's a stupid question and i refuse to answer it. So yeah, she's not agreeing to the spectacle. The players should be given the list of questions in advance and be allowed to say no comment if they so choose.

The big bucks are for me training and busting my butt on court for your entertainment. Not for the interviews!!!

"I hope the amount I get fined for this goes to a mental health charity."

So she is equating taking lame boring softball tennis questions from the media to mental abuse.

That is an insult to true victims and to the press.

Made 50 million last year off endorsements alone, probably why she realizes she can do this and get away with it but never tried before.

I don’t understand it, personally. If you fail to perform in your job, you will get hauled up for it and people will ask you what went wrong and why. Why should it be any different in sport?

She is a liar. There is zero mental abuse during these kissy-face softball interviews. All the questions relate to the tennis match. And if anybody by chance does ask an off-topic question she can just say, "Sorry. I'm only here to talk about the match."

How is she not able to deal with a softball 10 minute press conference?

I have to wonder if she is taking the hit that many players feel after they lose..... To come out and get dinged. I find it so offensive when a player loses and they are asked if they plan on retiring. That is wrong. I also see many moronic questions asked, where I'm sure players just roll their damn eyes. I wish the press would ask interesting questions instead of "Retirement questions prior to a retirement announcement, or non-thoughtful questions." I have heard players mention specific points and specific games. I haven't checked to see if they are just screwing with the press to see if the press actually picks up on either BS and calls them out, or just looks for some fluffer or gotcha questions.

I am also noticing how some feel anger at something where there should be none.

I like her game on the court.
She is basically spoiled cause she made 55 million this past year other players can't afford to skip and pay fines.

Its to promote the game!!

Anyway she's just gonna miss one after her first round loss.

Unsurprising to see so many people here triggered by her decisions. Calling her a snowflake when you’re getting outraged about a decision by someone who doesn’t even know or care you exist. Y’all are the snowflakes triggered by things that don’t impact you.

How will the media deal with not having such a charismatic interview????
How will Osaka's sponsors deal with not having their logos in front of cameras? How will her peers, the opponent players, cope with the player who does not have to do what they do?

I believe she has the right to do whatever she wants. She’s accepting to pay the fines, and that to me closes the subject. However, I don’t understand exactly the logic behind the decision. First, the uncomfortable press conference after a loss happens only once in a tournament. If someone is winning, I imagine doing press conferences about it every other day shouldn’t be that painful. Some players might actually enjoy them. And, as pointed out, she does a lot of political activism both on and off court, so why can’t she use the press conferences to further her causes? This said, I personally understand why would someone dislike journalists. I used to be one myself, and I do not hold this profession in high esteem. In fact, journalists are one step below lawyers in my eyes, and here I’m being kind to them.

I am super proud of her to stand her ground. I bet if tennis players were polled, she'd be popular for what she said.

She and her vulgar rapper boyfriend disgraced the sport by giving everyone the middle finger on the court of the U.S. Open.

She is an embarrassment to the sport.

Highest paid female athlete in history. She’s what the sport needs now that men’s tennis is heading off a cliff since nobody can take over from the big 3.

This would have been the better approach

This makes me wonder though...if she's going to make a fuss about "mental health", imagine some of the players trying to use that to their advantage. Think Mladenovic level of bitchiness. Wonder if it would throw Osaka off. Imagine if she had a Jimmy Connors like rival.

Will be interesting to see how FO reacts to this... let it go and set precedent or get negative press from taking a stand.

she just needs to watch a few of Belichick’s pressers and she will have all the answers she needs.

no on court interviews either? i suspect she'll be booed off the court after every match

She most certainly is not. She is a wonderful trailblazer, so proud of her. Embarrassed by the same trash that trashed the Williams sisters for INdian Wells.... FYI, I am not claiming that is you. Just remember how many folks trashed the Williams sisters over the years.....

Players don't get paid for playing tennis, being good at tennis has zero economic value, they get paid for drawing fans into stadiums and in front of TV. Media is part of that circus.
Considering she’s the highest paid female athlete in history, she’s doing a lot for tennis.

Well I for one am just glad that it was not Novak who made such a statement...we all know the same media and posters who are praising Naomi on “taking a stand” would have ripped Nole to shreds calling him arrogant and whatsoever.....

#Doublestandards

Seeing as barely anyone here is supporting her decision I think you’d find yourself wrong.

FYI Folks.... She is considered a hugely bankable star these days.... So, folks that go for anger and hate need to realize they are not on the same side as Big Business..
Folks should realize there is a reason why she has the comfort zone for speaking her mind. She's taking a stand on issues and can afford to take the hit.
Players that either don't make the bank that she does or are nearing retirement appreciate the cover. J

ust waiting for the hate aimed at reporters for harassing Federer over retirement...... and the anger towards the media for those questions....

Oh gee hmm probably this when Serena broke down and left her press conference after losing in Melbourne. Do you think before you post?

The drama queen Serena left after three minutes. There was absolutely nothing inappropriate with any of these questions.

Just take a look at these easy softball questions!.

Press Conference
THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.
Q. Were you nervous during that match at all?
SERENA WILLIAMS: I wouldn't say I was nervous, no.
Q. What do you think was the difference today?
SERENA WILLIAMS: The difference today was errors. I made so many errors today, so...
Honestly, it was opportunities where I could have won. I could have been up 5-Love. I just made so many errors, so...
Q. Could you have imagined, you had not a single forehand winner the first set?
SERENA WILLIAMS: Yeah, but I had a lot of forehand unforced errors. It was a big error day for me today.
Q. How did you feel this morning? How was your warmup? Did you feel like you were hitting the ball well?
SERENA WILLIAMS: Yeah, I felt well. I felt like I was hitting well. I was hitting well this whole tournament. Even the first couple games I played well. Even then I had so many opportunities.
Yeah, so it was just -- I don't know. Yeah, just made too many mistakes there, easy mistakes. Not like I was on the run or anything, they were just easy, easy mistakes.
Q. What do you take away from the experience of the last few weeks in what's going to be required of you personally to pursue tennis over the next six months, and also in terms of the sport in general, the complications of everything?
SERENA WILLIAMS: Yeah, I feel like I haven't really thought about that so much. But I think going through last year with the pandemic was definitely interesting. So I have a little experience under my belt with that, I guess.
But, yeah, those are things that I haven't really thought about.
Q. There was a really poignant moment when you walked off the court. You put your hand over your heart. What was going through your head in that moment?
SERENA WILLIAMS: I don't know. The Aussie crowd is so amazing, so it was nice to see.
Q. Some people wondered if you were almost saying farewell.
SERENA WILLIAMS: I don't know. If I ever say farewell, I wouldn't tell anyone (smiling). So...
Q. The unforced errors through the match, considering how well up you played to get to this stage, what do you feel caused that? Was it just one of those bad days at the office?
SERENA WILLIAMS: I don't know. I'm done (tearing up).

That’s not what you said. You said what in the world is she talking about and I showed you. Players have broken down before in interviews.

Who fines them? Bart says these players are independent contractors.

I think the WTA fines her (or) the French Open does... not sure but she will get fined. Its good for the game for players to do these interviews; it gives fans insights. I'm interested since this is a pre announcement of non compliance if the tour will do something about it ahead of time. I know players skip them sometimes but that's usually due to a harsh match (joker at the open) etc.
