Well done Naomi

Naomi Osaka seems to be worried about her state of mind and what she could say if she did not like a question which is why she does not want to talk. If she does have a doctor's note that she is mentally unhealthy, she has a point. However, should she be allowed to participate as a tennis player even without the pressers? I know she's to play tennis but so are the others who will give pressers.

Naomi puts tennis in the main news section of the UK's Guardian newspaper. You don't see tennis much on their front page in the sports section.

Well yeah shes right. Shes a tennis player so she can just play tennis, and get paid for it. So young but already makes a lot of sense. Unlike most of her pathetic male counterparts

Let’s see if others will follow suit. I know some players have an excellent relationship with the press, such as the big3, and understand the importance of PR, but I suspect most players must loath this part of their duties as participants to tournaments. If she remains alone in this new anti establishment political movement, it will reflect badly on her image as being not mentally strong and her opponents might feel emboldened.

Made 50 million last year off endorsements alone, probably why she realizes she can do this and get away with it but never tried before.

I don’t understand it, personally. If you fail to perform in your job, you will get hauled up for it and people will ask you what went wrong and why. Why should it be any different in sport?

These press confs are probably getting in the way of her posting her 5th daily picture on Instagram.

in terms of paying the fine to avoid press conferences, i don't blame players if they choose that route. most of the questions are so mind-numbing, it is a waste of life to sit there. i can't believe how some of the journalists have their jobs.

in terms of mental health, it reminds me of a group of high schoolers who wanted to make class presentations optional for kids who struggle with anxiety speaking in front of others. there's something to be said for people who have actual mental health issues that need to be sorted out, but for most, it is a skill and a necessity to practice overcoming that. reducing mental health stigma = good. generalizing every problem as a legitimate mental health issue to avoid bettering yourself = bad.

People think that just because someone can do one activity: play tennis for example, in front of crowds without anxiety doesn't mean that same person can do another activity: talk to reporters in a press conference without anxiety.

I'm sure Naomi can do both, because she has. She's saying she's choosing not to do the latter - at least at RG. Whatever. I kind of liked her pressers because she seemed pretty genuine compared to many, but it doesn't matter much to me.

Lots of big statements from people on this thread about her mental fortitude. Lol. 95% of the people on this thread would **** their pants if they had to be on TV doing anything. Fortunately for their pants and laundry situation, they can just act tough on a keyboard anonymously...

It doesn't reflect her lack of mental toughness but rather a brattish streak to demand and get what she wants couched in mental health word salad to sell it to the media. Brilliantly done, has to be said.

I'm pretty cool with the idea of the trade-off...meet your commitments or get fined, and accepting the fine...could do without the drama queen pretentiousness, though. She probably believes she's making some really "deep" statement, but it comes off fairly puerile.

What they don't realize is all this pressure is why you get paid the big bucks.

CEO's should stop doing shareholder meetings because it is undue pressure on them...
Professional tennis players get money for winning tennis matches and tournaments not by answering usually stupid questions after a tough match, especially one you have lost. IMO, answering questions after a match should be voluntary.

Not really. The reason they get money is that people are interested enough in tennis to throw money in its direction.

And the press is part of that publicity/hype building machine.

It's the same for all pro sports (and more generally, the entertainment industry), and it's very much part of the job.

it shouldn't be voluntary, it's also part of their job, and what if everyone doesn't want to answer..what then?..ask yourself

Can you not live without them?
I have been a die hard tennis fan for 20 years and I believe I have watched maybe two press conferences in that time. The best of Roddick jokes and the one where Murray was in tears and retiring for the first time.

* And Djokovic: "Not to bada."

cha cha cha, it's not about me at all:D, i can, of course

cant she just go to the press conference and not answer any questions that she doesnt want and give a simple yes/no for the questions that she does answer

basically do what Gregg Popovich does during his press conferences, which is understandable because reporters are annoying and ask the same pointless questions over and over

But then she wouldn't be making a statement, I think is the logic (?) at work here.

Does anyone really care about these press conferences? I watch clips occasionally, but if you said there would never be another player press conference - except maybe after a final, I would shrug and move on.

I don't really get why they exist.

Love them, but they can be hard to find. A lot of questions can be stupid, but when players are able to break down matches and points, it´s super interesting! FAFFA for example, seems to be able to remember and analyse every single point played in a match!

OT: Can´t stand Cowsaka!

I am curious to know how this links into her mindset when it comes to approaching clay this year. Her form hasn't been great and I wonder whether she feels the press conferences will make her doubt her abilities on clay because even if she wins R1 and R2 there will be big Qs around how she has adapted to clay and whether she is ready this year to go deep.

As of now, she knows the rules and those are that you get fined when you miss press conferences and she has accepted that - I see no issue with this. She is in a position to sponge this up easily as she has earnt so much over the past few years, so I appreciate the argument that lower ranked players likely couldn't afford this.

I think some of the venom in the comments here are really holding this up to be a bigger controversy than it actually is because they have issues with Osaka that stem from insecurities of their own. So much language showing distain for Naomi cause she actually stands for something that isn't the status quo - I am not 100% clear on her aims here but she's free to do as she pleases on these matters which affect her. Perhaps she will regret it in hindsight? Or maybe it'll get the organisations to consult with players and improve things for those involved - we shall see.

I now wish Serena “I’m a mother“ Williams double bageled at her at USO

Wouldn't go that far lol, but yeah she's being stupid. I honestly don't know what to say here. It doesn't surprise me coming from her, but it's disappointing. She's always been a little strange. You're not allowed to say strange anymore though. It's unique now right? Whatever.

And I don't think this is a hive mentality TTW thing. I really don't. I think there's many more people even outside of TTW that don't understand this in the least. I get not liking the stupid reporters and their questions, I dislike tennis reporters in general and I think they're all stupid AF, but this is extreme. She doesn't even get truly berated in 99% of her press conferences. Not like an ice hockey, basketball, or baseball player after a horrible game just in comparison. She doesn't even get mean things chanted at her in the field of play.

And I sympathize with legitimate mental health problems. I know people that have legitimate problems, but this seems like a defense mechanism. It's like she's being overly protective of herself because she's afraid of what she might hear, not what she actually does hear.

So you dislike tennis reporters and think their questions are stupid, but you'd just leave it be? She's decided to make a stand - correctly or incorrectly the outcome may not be made clear, but she's decided to try and change something she doesn't agree with. I'm not 100% clear on what's going on and why suddenly at RG but she will take the fines which is what the rules state.

I'm sure that Nike and her other sponsors will be thrilled that she won't be doing any press at tournaments... Funny though that I bet she'll be there when its a press conference for her line of self designed Nike clothing... I get that its tough to have to answer questions after you've lost a hard fought match, but she makes MILLIONS of dollars a year, the press is part of her job, and losing matches is as much a part of her job as winning!

I for one agree with Osaka............ but only because I never want to watch another one of her “ummmmm, errrrr, uhhhhhhhh, (looks at phone ), ummmmmm, errrrr, uhhhh, ummmmm (puts music on phone)” filled press conferences ever again.

I would take it one further though, she doesn’t get victory speeches either.

Folks, this is a win/win for human civilization.

It's still going on.

To whom it applies, because there are some decent people here. I'll tell you one thing: I love watching you clowns eat crow. You squids think with your bleeding hearts and clam up like it's a horror flick every time the simple reality smacks you awake, "Hello!" Been telling you know-it-alls since I joined that this generation was lazier and led by the laziest frontrunner we've ever had.

But no. You cried and cried and called me racist and sexist for saying this woman wasn't committed to anything. Another wake-up smack: she doesn't care about you toads. She's rich as hell, you aren't, and suckers like yourselves are the suckers she thrives on for her $40+ million endorsements in 2020 after winning ONE tournament that year. Suckers are abundant, eating out the palm of her hand, and they love it. They absolutely adore getting whipped by her mood swings.

Here's some news for you duped peeps who think I'm only here to spread the Armageddon: when Hingis was sucking in '98, I talked bad about her. When Kournikova was sucking, I talked bad about her. When Serena and Venus weren't ever playing full schedules early on, I talked bad about them. I talked bad about Dementieva's lack of serve improvement. I talked bad about Sharapova's lack of improvement against Serena. I talked bad about Ivanovic's falling for the fame. About Majoli's falling for the fame. About Vicario and Pierce's failures to take over after Graf faltered. About Dokic's unwillingness to separate herself from a negative situation that hurt herself and her tennis. About Seles' goofy attitude towards Garrison. About Garrison's phony lawsuit.

I talked bad about everyone when they deserved it. So just because I talked bad about this girl and the rest of her half-popped corny peers, guess what? I didn't burglarize their homes. I didn't hit you clowns with a bat. So grow some damned skin for a change. Quit acting like everyone's out to get you because we don't like everything about these far-off women you're dedicating your lives to. You've got the whole internet at your fingertips, and everything that comes with it, and you're using it to get upset over what some anonymous people say about a lofty millionaire you've never met. What kind of childishness is that?

Not sure if anyone already mentioned it but I wonder if she just doesn’t want to deal with questions related to the Olympics and whether they should still be held. A major Japanese newspaper just came out with an article saying they should be canceled. She’d lose either way she answers.

It’s obviously a major topic over there now with the vaccine issues and steady, if not rising, COVID numbers. Some major cities are under emergency situations. She’s already expressed doubt holding the games but maybe wants to avoid it altogether now.

If she starts doing interviews again after the Olympics timeline, I guess that would answer that.
That’s actually a really good point, didn’t think of that. Hard one to answer cause you’d be attacked by

Literally look at the countless pages. Nobody cares about Hurkacz winning a Masters and the failing ATP heading off a cliff one the big 3 go while Osaka delivers mammoth headlines and attention to the sport. All these salty snowflakes just getting triggered shows how popular she is for the sport. Global headlines this one is. I know nothing about the ATP except Nadal has already won and the next gen are failures.

Cut it. If she didn't want to answer about the Olympics, she'd decline to answer just that. She's not a little baby anymore, Darcy. She's a grown-ass woman. She knows what she's doing. You all get way too attached to these peeps.

...for free. At least Hingis is paying me to shill.

Martina Hingis will never know you exist despite your obsession. And Osaka is a grown ass woman who can do as she wants. She’s the highest paid female athlete in history (way higher than Hingis). She is doing amazing things for the sport, your disturbing hatred of her aside. Look at the attention this gets vs anything on the men’s side. It’s hilarious seeing how triggered you are by this decision.

You joker, it's because there's no one else that's marketable as an ATG of anything in this current generation. As much as you online fans wants Swiatek and Andreescu and Bouchard and Barty and Sakkari and Halep and the rest to be the next big thing, no one outside of your 'Create an Account' circle knows or gives a damn about these people. Not a single damned person. They aren't household names. How much is it going to take to get that through your head? Osaka won one tournament in 2020. One tournament. Guess how much she's won this year? One tournament! You think that minimal s*** would fly in any other era? From the '70s to the early '10s?

Come the hell on, man. She's a marketers dream because she doesn't have to have a firecracker personality. She has the ethnics covered, and all she has to do is win a slam or two to get people interested because no one else on the tour can even win a slam or two consistently. Even a Masters 1000. Even a 500. You're incredible, pretending as if this girl's competing against a powerful field of personalities or talent.

Who cares that she can only play who's in front of her? That's the whole problem with her generation- there's nobody in front of her!

It’s cause she’s amazing on and off the court. Known for the quirky personality and activism she attracts so many to the sport despite the ******** you post. So funny seeing how upset you get about her. Highest paid female athlete in history. Amazing.

The rest of the stuff you posted is hilarious nonsense since you’ve got Barty and Swiatek winning big tournaments as well as the slam. Stop embarrassing yourself. It’s really sad :/

But you don't represent the entire tennis watching Universe... Its common understanding that 70-80% of the tennis watching people prefer mens to womens tennis!!!

Martina Hingis will never know you exist
And I don't want her to, you clown. Good heavens, it was a joke. The woman still has a better resume than Osaka, as does Serena, as does Venus, as does ASV, as does Davenport, as does Sharapova. This ain't about an 'obsession'. It's about you're a mid-20s man who's throwing out 'haters' and 'triggered' about anyone saying anything negative about this person's work ethic in her tennis profession on a tennis forum. Heaven forbid the goddess face even the slightest amount of criticism!

And Osaka is a grown ass woman who can do as she wants. She’s the highest paid female athlete in history (way higher than Hingis).
I know she's a grown-ass woman, and she's getting criticized like one, so suck it up and stop babying her. They're both rich. At a certain point, no one cares. You aren't making that money, are you?

See, that's the problem with you perpetual shills. You live through everyone else's accomplishments. Her being the 'highest paid female athlete in history' for one year, ain't giving us good tennis. I don't give a s*** how much she makes. I want to see her make it to Week 2 of a clay or grass tournament without embarrassing herself so I can get my time's worth.

She is doing amazing things for the sport,
She ain't doin s***. The WTA is at its lowest in years. Get outta here.

as for osaka she's just pre-empting losing and having to have that awkward interview, except this is the twitter era too so it also has to be a Big Deal Online

other players would do this too, but she's the first one who's arrogant enough to do it preemptively i guess? idk

Without the media and attention, they so not get paid. It is how the sport grows.
You here mr, have hit the nail on its head..... However successful a person may be, without the support of mainstream and social media journalists , they won't get the desired outreach, pr, fame and many more... Imagine the press people deciding to ban her for the forthcoming uso & ao Swing ang giving all the attention to the likes of pliskova, swiatek, barty and Halep!!!!! She winning the uso gsfinals and still if no press people interested in her interview???? She will be crying for months together in the case of a such scenario

I think there was a better way to approach this than mentioning anything to do with mental health at all. Honestly, if she had just left it at "I hate tennis reporters and their stupid questions" it would've sounded much better IMO. But it's almost like she threw some mental health stuff in there to get more people on her side because it's been a hot topic for the last 5-6 years.

And yes I dislike tennis reporters, but I don't know how you get rid of press conferences from every sport entirely either. The reporters have a job too as much as I dislike them, and I'm sure they love getting quotes from the athletes for their articles. She's making a stand sure, but I'm not sure how much traction she'll get doing it this way. Not every athlete is Naomi Osaka. In fact, she is very unique. They won't all stand behind her in 100% agreement just because she mentioned a few things about mental health. I'm sure some (even most) athletes are friendly with reporters.

I also expect to take some heat for this post because it's hard to talk about mental health without even accidentally offending someone, which is not my intention. So that said, my honest opinion in this particular unique case (not every case) is that she pulled the mental health card unnecessarily to get out of taking press conferences.

And one other thing, she'll look like a hypocrite for the first press conference after this that she does. The only way this really works is if she never does another press conference in her career. But what happens in Australia when they're looking for an on court interview after every match? Good luck with that I say.

Calling your own remarks 'amazing' betrays how in denial you are.

Second, no one gives a damn about Barty and Swiatek. Again, you're in your own world. The tennis forums aren't the real world. Keep shilling as the ratings and viewership keep falling. I love seeing you feverishly defending this twerp every other week. She'll keep embarrassing you and raising your blood pressure, and I'll keep loving it because I tried to tell you clowns. But you know so much, don't you. Can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink.

So what? She can suck it the hell up. No one's mocking her. This woman wouldn't have survived a second in Kournikova's shoes. They'd actually be attacking her boyfriend. Saying she's marketing too much and not committed enough. Saying they should break up. She's a marshmallow, point blank.

Osaka matches are watched by millions worldwide and have broken records, stop embarrassing yourself. She is bringing so many to the sport and is the most popular player since Serena. Just cause you get so triggered and upset by her doesn’t make it true. She’s smashing records and bringing people to the sport.
