Mixed doubles match yesterday. Weather was darn near perfect, save for a little bit of gusty winds from time to time.
Start off playing okay, lost my serve at 5-4 due to two dumb shot decisions and going for too much on a second serve at 15-30. Lost that one in a tiebreak. Bah.
Got it together in the second set, took advantage of a late break at 5-5 and took it 7-5. Both of us were playing pretty well, and things were looking up for the third set.
Oops. Next thing you know, we're down 0-5 in the third set. My shots are landing 2" out, opponents are hitting some ridiculous lucky lunging shots, etc. It's just not working for us. Then it happened. Something clicked (and un-clicked) for both teams at the same time. I won my serve to make it 5-1, we hit some good shots to break, then my partner held to make it 5-3.
At this point, I knew we had a good chance to win. Our opponents had stopped talking to each other, and I could tell they were not happy with the way things were going. Another break and hold, and we're dead even at 5-5. Egad.
My partner held to take the lead at 6-5, and we had a relatively easy break to take SEVEN STRAIGHT GAMES IN THE THIRD SET as our opponents' wheels completely fell off. They didn't play terribly poorly in those last games, we just hit smart shots and didn't do anything stupid (like earlier in the set).
To rub salt in the wound, my female opponent was a big New England fan, evidenced by her two kids who were there in their Patriots jerseys. I whispered to my partner "She's gonna beat her kids something fierce tonight if the Patriots lose too."
Twas a nice turnaround to my 0-2 start to this season. Whew.
