If you take a juicer and mix up Nixon´s centrism, the fab 7 of tennis, the muscled cars, Led Zepp´s genious ( and some 15 more bands at the R&R scene), the great TV shows, the " live the momentum" style and the compromising and uncompromising atittudes of the time...well, who else needs more proofs that we were never closer to heaven than in the early 70´s?

No the 70's were not more or less special than other times. Of course they are special to the generation that grew up to become adults during that time, for sure they have dear memories.

It's a pretty common situation that when people get older they start to live more and more in the past, especially the past when they were between 15 and 25.

It's OK.

There has been good and bad in any decade.I just summarised some things that, at least, made that decade special.

I wasn't born until 78, but the early 70ies sure look nice on paper - no wars, no problems, everyone in the world just lovin' life...

"The Culture of Narcissism" was published in 1979, capping off the decade in which pathologic narcissism was seen as taking over American culture. One of the features of this pathologic narcissism is the belief that one's own decade or period of coming of age was somehow special and unprecedented,"the peak of mankind" if you will.

And so many classic movies, with two all time greats facing off ( Pacino and De Niro, Coppola and Kubrick)

The 70s seems to have been a very good decade. Less money in the wrong places and more opportunity and less destructive practises.Less stress and more room for thought and original design , art , music , architecture and money was money not digital numbers and banks werent casinos, Guess it beats nowadays by a mile and the 80s by another.

Well, you are right about that, society can do a lot more for everyone when the top tax rate is 70% (like in the 70's) compared to 35% (like now).

Yes, and that changed with Reagan. The middle class was stronger in 1970 than now.It has been progressively hampered even if some swifts have been taking part since the Vodoonomics changed the whole thing.

I couldn´t agree more.Globalisation and Internet are fantastic if a balance and values are kept...unfortunately, it is not happening anymore in the Western World ( and it is not happening at all in the rest of the planet)

Nixon made a " big mistake" (which would be laughing matter today, at least in Europe ) but he was one of the best , or at least, smartest politicians the US has had since Roosevelt. No question about that.

His centrism is so much missed in today politics..or do you dare comparing him to somebody like Palin?

Interesting thoughts - though I think we should leave this part of the topic here so as not to get the thread deleted

True, one can see how some issues that arent that crucial get a greatly disproportionate amount of airtime and occupy the attention of too many for too long.
At the expense of the core problems.
Values arent held due to financial favors and it gets messy.

dParis, it seems that the younger posters haven´t had the chance to know different values and different politics other than those they have been raised in.

The 70's were the childhood and the adolescence of the Grand Poobah...i.e. A needed but truly weak era. Post-Millennium is the age of full bloom for our leader. Be thankful you presently live in the age of sureshs!

If by 'we' you mean everyone who has never heard of the Renaissance then I do believe the 70's were pretty neat - not counting oil crisis, Nixon, apartheid, disco and the countless other things that made it one of the worst periods in history. Oh, and not to mention that the 70s was the root cause of the Regan and Thatcher eras. Yep, a whole lot to like about it.

The 70's isn't viewed in a particularly positive light by most who lived through it,or at least it wasn't when they were living through it. The passing of time causes people to paper over the cracks and remember the highlights...

70's was a weak era, kiki.

Back in the Cretaceous Era we had to compete with dinosaurs. Now that was the real peak.

Reagan and Thatcher movements were a reaction AGAINST the 70´s not the evolution of the 70´s.Yes,there were many bad things such as Latam dictatorships ( supported by the Nixon Administration, that is, Devil Kissinger), drugs and violence problems, disasters...but the fun was the funniest ever and the good art and movies among the most inspired.Yes, if any other period can be compared to Renaissance, it is the 1960-1980 period.

When I use LZ as an example, it is the best example.I am not saying they were the best or most liked band because, at the end , it depends on taste. But certainly, their amazing spirituality, dare, boldness, creativity, summons up very well the concept of Rennaissance.Page was a modern Leonardo or Dante and Plant , a modern Giotto_Or Rafaello.

This is actually a good title; Christopher Lasch generally makes good, cogent observations.

The 70s was the last era when there was a balance of power between capital and labour. After that the disaster that we see today began with Carter, before being perfected with Reagan and Thatcher.
