Wertheim: "Mary Carillo will be conspicuously missed at ESPN"

What a relief, Carillo was exasperating. I so wish they'd get rid of Cliff and Dick as well. They are SO annoying. Cahill, Gilbert and Fowler are perfect. I like Mary-Joe too. I haven't seen Johnny Mac yet. I hope he's still around. I like him better than PMac. Navratilova is great too, I always enjoy listening to her comments. Too bad Agassi doesn't comment, he would be amazing.

It's easy to confuse Mary and Pam if you go by looks, swagger and popularity (lack thereof).
But Mary's much, much smarter, and her ease of delivery is really impressive.

Though she is outspoken to a fault, Mary is way more self-aware, too. Not safe, but savvy. She would never have gotten into it with James.

As much as I don't like Mary, I respect her knowledge and commitment. She's got a lot of Frank DeFord in her, and I only mean that figuratively.

EDIT:
You guys think The Tennis Channel will offer her a job?

You are spot on. Carillo would have never done anything that would literally disrupt a match, as Pam Shriver did. Mary obviously loves to hear herself talk, but I don't feel that she is mean spirited or craves negative attention(like McEnroe and Shriver).

Carillo is professional, does have a lot of knowledge and people might be surprised that she has been a tennis commentator since the mid '80s. She has put her time in and continues to be someone that is proud to represent the sport.

Don't get me wrong, she gets on my nerves. But, I have respect for her ability and professionalism.

I have no doubt that she will work for the tennis channel.

Mary Carillo is not a racist and has never exhibited any hatred or intolerance towards other races publicly or otherwise. Mary Carillo was not fired from ESPN. Mary Carillo continues to enjoy success well-beyond ESPN.

Stop race-baiting and using it as a battering tool during honest and open debate. It makes you look a little cuckoo.

Amen. Its one think to not like Mary. I can see how she's not everyone's cup of tea. But calling her racist is way offside and a total lie.

-Enberg is really embarassing sometimes, not sure why he's still there.

-God help me, I'm starting to like Brad Gilbert (never would have thought that would happen). I think he's calmed down a bit from when he first started. And he definitely seems knowledgable about the players and tennis.

-I'm really liking Mary Joe. She's doing a great job and really seems to know her stuff with the women.

But as that article earlier pointed out, there are so many conflicts of interest with all these commentators. How are they supposed to air their opinions freely when their husband is an agent, they are in charge of USTA player development or they are coaching or have coached some players? Its so true what Wertheim wrote about it all being a little too incestuous.

First of all, Pam Shriver got into it with James Blake, not Mary Carillo. Second of all, Carillo wasn't fired; she asked ESPN to let her out of the last year of her contract, and ESPN agreed. Please get your facts straight next time.

Meanwhile, back on topic.....I somewhat agree with Jon Wertheim. In an industry with a tradition of professional incest (agents' wives commenting on matches involving their husband's clients, Davis/Fed Cup captains commenting on matches involving team members), Carillo was one of the few truly independent voices in the game. The only problem was, that independent voice was often heard while the ball was in play.

What did James B and Pam Shriver arguing over?

The networks need to take this opportunity to get rid of all those old windbags: Drysdale, Shriver, Enberg, etc.

Start bringing in some new talent, especially the color commentators. I'm sure there are a lot of younger, former tour players who could provide more insightful and up to date commentary than this group that played in the 60s and 70s. Seriously, how many times do we have to listen to one of Drysdale's anecdotes on playing against Rod Laver?

You mean like Gimelslob? But...we do need new voices. There are plenty of former players out there who would be good a this job. I guess they just don't want to do it.

Pam was commenting courtside how James' game had sort of gone downhill while James was playing a match--near where she was. James got tired of her talking and told her to be quiet.

No question they were kicking Blake while he was down and they repeated themselves way too often. Just switch to another match already, we got the point.

However, none of what was said was inaccurate. Blake is one of many athletes the world over who were pampered quite a bit growing up and therefore the hunger to win never really developed properly. He had his moments, but anyone who has watched him over the years knew that this was a guy with skills who simply wasn't hungry to win.

it's funny as I came across this thread, as I have just tweeted yesterday that now that Mary is gone, how can we get Pam Shriver off the air. I did not know about the Shriver/Blake fiasco until now. That is very unprofessional of her.

And I hate whenever a top player plays a player that is outside of top 50, Shriver always belittle the upcoming opponent, does anybody else notice that?

I apologize for the lack of references, but I've felt that Mary was being 'pushed around' in the commentary booth for a few years. as a result her opportunity to make insightful comments always ended up, unfortunately, running in to the points themselves. Say what you want, she always had worthwhile points to make, enough insider information to make things interesting, and a real passion for the game. I am interested to see how she will handle herself in a match when she isn't playing 'second hog' to Mac.

Murrayfan31: You're an *** for making such a comment. Are you homophobic, transphobic or sexist? None of those traits are worthwhile. Just asking you to grow up a little.
Mary Carillo has been part of the tennis fabric since the mid-70s, including her 1977 mixed doubles victory at the French Open with John McEnroe. Her commentary has been insightful over the years, and I hope that it will continue.

Be nice to Mary. Her and Bud Collins are two of the greatest friends tennis has ever had. Mary is one of the few that is actually honest anymore and loves the game. Most of the others just say what they are told to say.

Mary for for Serena being banned from the sport after her fiasco at the open.

Mary is the only one who talkes about the dangers of overmarketing the game.

Mary is the only one that talks about good growth over bad growth (which is what we have) for the game.

You better appreciate Carillo now because she is the last of the great commentators. After that its going to be corperate commentators only. Tony Trabert was in this realm as well but he has been gone for a long time.

^Bud Collins rocks!!!!! He's the reason I watch tennis. Mary may be knowledgable, but she is SOOOOOOO boring!

I like Mary Carillo. I think she brings a great deal to the table. Sure, she's said some things she probably regrets, but that's just part of the business.

With regard to Robbie & Jason, it doesn't get much better IMO.

I miss Tony Trabert at the Open with Pat Sumarall and <insert former pro here> as well.

My biggest miss is the dynamic duo of Cliff Drysdale and the Fiery One along with Mary. I thought that was the best threesome of commentators ever.

Mary Carillo is a nice person, and you'd hate for something bad to happen to her, however her commenting left a a fair bit to be desired. May she enjoy commenting dog grooming shows.

Maybe they could move Bud Collins up to a nice cushy exec job or give him a nice retirement package. They need someone sharp and very knowledgeable in the game yet with the quick wit like the hilarious new anchor from tsn sportscenter Jay Onrait.

Obviously Djokovic would be a hilarious commentator. Too bad he has those restaurants, he won't be going into commentating post career. Listen to a few of his Arthur Ashe day appearances. He completely keeps the show going inspite of the lackluster attempts at humor from Roddick, zero attempts from Nadal, former (previous years) facepalm attempts from Jim Courier, other miniscule attempts from other stars.

I tend to like knowledgable adults who care about the sport. Not clowns like Djokovich that want to appeal to some sort of mass audience by acting like a fool to get bigger contracts. If that was good for tennis the Jensen brothers would be running the show.

I like Pat Cash as a commentator as well. Hes not like Mary but he says it the way it is. If a player has a history of being lazy or whatever....Pats not afraid to say it. Almost to the point he is abrasive. I was always surprised they let Cashy commentate. He is almost to the point of being dangerous in the booth the way he lets it fly.

McEnroe has become a sell out. As have most commentators.

Mary was unbearable to listen to unless you like commentators that only talk positively about the Americans in the match. Listening her call one of the Williams sisters matches was brutal.

Professionalism & Carillo? Not Often in Same Sentence!

I hadn't missed her these first four months of the '11 season. Knowing she will invade FO coverage makes me cringe and search for the mute button. Her true lack of professionalism was displayed on air at the USO ('08?) when calling a match involving Eduardo Schwank. She must have goofed on his name at least 6 times before someone whispered in her earpiece to stop ripping on his surname. Thoroughly juvenile!

I actually liked Mary early on in her career of commentating. At some point, I felt like she felt she had to "play up" everything and started saying way more than needed.

I think Tennis Channel will pick her up at some point. I don't think TC has the funds right now to pay Mary what she thinks she's worth.

Did you really not see posts #65 and #66 of this thread, on the same page as your post?

mary imo is not bad.
dick enberg is the one who should be eliminated. he talks too much. sometimes, i would have to turn off the volume so i didn't have to listen to him talk while the point was in play.

"Oh My!"

.......

haha. he was ok when he was a side kick for bud collins at NBC
but when got to espn he would talk a lot more than any other commentators there.
while the players were playing he would read to the audience titbits about them. he has ruined many of the matches for me.

Watching tennis with Enberg is like watching tennis with your favorite grandpa in the room. He never bothered me much.

Shriver- Terrible. Just to witchy

Austin- The absolute worse. I think she is a very nice person but shes like a gossip columnist. Its like shes just a guest goofing around in the booth.

McEnroe- Too Fake. He used to be great though

Vitas- He was awesome. I miss him

Jensen- Terrible

Cahill- used to be good. Have not seen him lately

I can't believe Tennis Channel could pay Mary Carillo near what she made at ESPN. Why did she make the move? When she left ESPN, it was announced that she had asked out of the last year of her contract. Was she pushed out? Is there more to this story than meets the eye?

I'm sure TC is not paying her near what she made at ESPN simply because its not the same type of contract. I doubt she was pushed out, I think she got tired of working so much for so many networks and opted out of the biggest obligation she had.

Jim Courier all-time guy in the booth. Knows the game and pulls no punches!
