Wertheim Removed From TC

Ok then Jon Wertheim needs to accept that saying negative and insulting things in a bully manner has repercussions. Maybe next time he should keep his thoughts to himself.
So the idea is, it's OK to think (and truly believe) negative and insulting things about people so long as, when you speak, you say the exact opposite of what you think. That makes sense. And seems very healthy for the community and culture.

I have to say, you are the most beautiful and intelligent poster on TW.

Read above. If you have nothing nice to say - we don’t want to hear it. Being a bully isn’t ideal.
Twisting my words into saying “thinking that “ is okay. Never said it. Never thought it. Don’t encourage it.

Enjoy.

But aren't we assuming Wertheim actually thinks and believes the comments he said?

You seem to only be worried about the fact that he said what he believed. Not that he believes it. Am I misunderstanding you?

Otherwise, I'd expect your comment to be something like "Werthheim should be fired because he has negative thoughts and beliefs about (female) athletes". But your comment only focused on the fact that he said it. In fact you go so far as to say, if he has negative thoughts, he should just keep those to himself.

We probably aren't going to come to an understanding on this (much less agree). Which doesn't really matter to me I guess. I just thought the implications of your comment were strange. Having said that, I think you represent the majority view. Everyone values a polite hypocrite. It's the height of good manners.

In fact, all of the comments on this thread are only concerned with the fact that he "got caught" and most recommend that he should "just stay quiet". Nobody actually seems concerned if these are his thoughts and maybe how he judges people. They are only concerned that he said it out loud. A few bring up the fact that many of his past actions suggest that what he said isn't actually his true beliefs. But most (including you) don't care what his true beliefs are. Your only focus is on the appearance (and what he got caught saying in one brief moment).

Look, I'm not an idealist. I know the rules. I know how people judge others. Nobody has time to worry about "facts". Which is why you'd better mind "appearances" and keep a good reputations, no matter what kind of a b@stard you truly are. In fact a good rule of thumb is, the folks that seem hyper concerned about their image (and always say and do the right things in public) are almost always the ones that have the most to hide (and probably shouldn't be trusted).

If everyone told the world their darker thoughts, then all the jails in the world would not suffice.

If Wertheim were a judge on America's Top Model, however, then his views on foreheads might be relevant.

Given that he is there to comment on sport, he would be wise to stick to what is within his professional jurisdiction.

But aren't we assuming Wertheim actually thinks and believes the comments he said?

i cant stand when people say things are “soft”….but damn, no one can make a joke anymore? im not an old timer and im not even a big JW fan. guy made a silly remark, made fun of himself, and a bad angle of another person, how insecure is everyone and everything? if the player in question was cool about it and said my forehead is the size of the moon ha ha ha, would he have been let go?

Some jokes are best made far from microphones, so he forgot the first law of broadcasting. It seems likely that he will be back soon enough so this is a slight reprimand.

Well, that's the ultimate problem isn't it? Our society is going to hell where a few misspoken or even intentional 'bad' words can get you cancelled. It's ridiculous that such power is now available to the masses. Things need to be righted and the woke minds need to be extinguished, lest they lead to the downfall of society as we know it. This is unnatural. and frankly scary. You should be able to say anything you want and no one should have the power to ruin your life for exercising your right.

Actually, we now appear to live in a world in which the slightest disciplinary action directed at any public personage (especially if he's a man) is mischaracterized as being "cancelled." Come back in a year and see how Wertheim is faring. I doubt that we'll find him on skid row.

It's ridiculous that such power is now available to the masses. Things need to be righted and the woke minds need to be extinguished,

I'm not sure what you mean by that, but it certainly sounds sick. Congratulations.

That's a ridiculous, childish view of the world. No one has a "right" to say stupid stuff and insist that everyone else just ignore it. Being an adult means understanding that actions have consequences. Being an employed adult means understanding that if you shoot off your mouth and publicly embarrass your employer, those consequences may be unpleasant for you.

JW situation has zero in common with the JG situation. You should run the new Cancel Commission in the Harris administration.

How do you figure? He had multiple issues (calling WTA players beached whales) that never got addressed and they did nothing until after he got arrested. Do that at your job and see what happens? You won't get canceled, you get FIRED and in some states you can be sued personally for harassment. In the state I am from, you might get punched in the mouth.

I didn't even know what an "8-head" meant until I just Googled it. It's a joke off of the word "forehead" meaning that someone's forehead (4-head) is so big, it's twice the size as normal, so it's an 8-head. This actually made me chuckle...

In this case, JW was comparing the view of his forehead in the monitor to BK's forehead when he made the joke. It was self-deprecating because JW does have a large forehead and a receding hairline, and to be real, BK's own hairline does accentuate her forehead. In terms of put-downs, this was pretty tame.

Personally, I think BK is cute in a natural girl-next-door kind of way. Her forehead is fine as far as I'm concerned. I'm the kind of guy that looks at the whole package, and with BK, I see a successful world class athlete, millionaire, and somebody who seems like a nice person. If I were single and she was interested, I'd date her in a hot minute. The fact is that some people have long noses, some short, some people have a weird chin line... there are always imperfections we don't like about ourselves. It sounds like BK is sensitive about this topic, but if JW apologized, that should be the end of this tempest in a teacup. At the end of the day, BK has a few Grand Slam trophies and JW doesn't, so she wins!

How many women do you know with full-on widow's peaks? It also appears that she's losing it a bit too. She has a man's hairline and it sucks for her. Don't blame her for being sensitive about it.

Lucky for her there are a giant pair of honeydews to take the focus off the hairline

You’re repeating my point re JGs multiple issues culminating in violence. Then oddly you seem to suggest it’s an appropriate or inevitable way to act.

No, I am saying they had to take some sort of action for an employee or contractor joking about a contractors looks because of how they handled incidents int he past. I don't think either is an appropriate way to act at a job.

Well then I think we both agree that with JGs multiple incidents and violent Top Gun attack that he had to go. With JW you think “some sort of action” had to be taken. I thought you advocated for firing him so if you did not then I misunderstood that part.

I don’t think it’s an appropriate way to act at a job either. Nor do I think punching people in the nose an appropriate reaction to it off the job. In any state. No need of course to agree with me on anything but please don’t virtually punch me in the nose.

What was the exact quote for which he was suspended? It is not even mentioned in this thread. Is it forbidden to repeat the quote a public news story?
Or are TTW readers once again opining without knowledge of the facts at hand?

Why can't we simply post the actual quote here? In the very thread that is purportedly discussing the quote that has never been cited.
Google results are still very vague about the quote. Only generally describes it as "inappropriate".
It is like pulling teeth trying to get the actual quote. This is counterproductive as it leaves it to the reader's imagination as to what was actually said.
Therein lies the problem with Cancel Culture/DEI. Extremist ideologues will inevitably eat their own.

Jon Wertheim knows more about the world than almost everyone here and it will be a shame if a tennis player is able to abort someone's career like this. Hopefully a 2 week suspension is just deemed enough.

This culture is really dangerous for the society moving forward.
Who cares? Commentators are worthless anyway. They arnt doing or creating anything productive. Just giving their two cents about people who actually have value. I certainly don’t need to hear his opinions about anything

The comments on this story from female readers are mainly negative:

"Whether he was on camera or off, it was a deeply hurtful and moronic thing to say, and shows his true character. He's not really sorry for what he said, he's just sorry he got caught."

Not clear why a dunderhead announcer that is covering a female sport is risking his job by commenting on a beloved Wimbledon champion's physical appearance.

In a three-part tweet, the Wimbledon champion called Wertheim’s comments “disappointing.”

“You might have heard about the recent comments made on Tennis Channel during the WTA Finals coverage that focused on my appearance rather than my performance. As an athlete who has dedicated herself to this sport, it was disappointing to see this type of unprofessional commentary,” she began.

“This isn't the first time something like this is happening in sports world. l've often chosen not to speak up, but I believe it's time to address the need for respect and professionalism in sports media. These moments distract from the true essence of sport and the dedication all athletes bring to the field. I love tennis deeply, and I want to see it represented in a way that honors the commitment we make to compete at this level,” the athlete added.

This casual off-air remark would not have even been a story 10 years ago. It would have been laughed off.
The response has been hugely disproportionate to the offense.
No need to be disingenuous. Professional standards did not change. The political climate however did very much change.

This is Krejcikova's statement (posted on Twitter). She's not calling for his career to be "aborted", she's just expressing her disappointment in a fairly civil tone.

Who knew eight-head was an insult? It was originally used to denote that the best length of the human body was eight times the length of the head.

The fashion/artistic use then transformed into a slang insult against people with foreheads double the normal size.

If Brad Pitt made a comment like that, his flunkies wouldn’t dare make it public. If anything it would be edited to have him saying something that would endear him more to his fans. It’s good to be the king

The question with Wertheim is, who leaked this and why? It wasn’t done by accident

But if it's someone they want to keep around at TC, then I doubt this goes public. It didn't get released by accident (nothing happens by accident).

Jon must have made someone at TC mad so they gave the green light to releasing this to the mob (public) with the predictable outcome.

The responses on this thread are pretty funny. You get the feeling people think this whole thing wasn't managed by those in charge / power. It doesn't take a conspiracy theorist to understand that those in power control the narrative and nothing happens without their approval. Sure, there could be an exception here and there (things that they can't fully control, only manage after the fact), but I think the other way is more common.

Krejickova and her team are obviously insiders too. So they were taxed with crafting the appropriate response. It isn't like Krejickova just jumps on social media and types out whatever comes into her head. Although TC probably took the liberty of writing her response themselves to make sure it fit the narrative.
