Let's stop talking about tennis, and let's meet up and play! I'm proposing meeting at these public courts (no pass, no membership required):

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&sou...966,-73.847126&spn=0.005121,0.010235&t=h&z=17

Respond if interested, and let everyone know:
1) where you're coming from (Me: I live close to these courts)
2) what ntrp level you are (no exaggerating please)? (Me: 4.5 player)
3) prefered time/date/day (Me: at 7am)

Tentatively I propose Sat July 4th, 7am... trouble with a no pass, no membership courts, is you have to compete with others for courts - but I know at 7am only hard core folks are will to get up that early. If there's enough interest, and varied levels of players, we can start with similar levels (I can even bring out my ball machine if there are odd # of folks), then mix things around. While this is a social event, the main idea is play some intense tennis (ie. be ready to run - or if you're the best on the court - work on the B, C, D game(s))

Bumping this thread, so it makes it to the [New Posts] results... I'm guessing most folks check this stuff at work :p

1) Glenville, Greenwich, CT. I can hop on Anderson Hill Road and be at the Westchester Mall within 10-15 minutes; if that gives anyone a better idea as to where I'm coming from.
2) No idea. Probably a low 5.0 or somewhere in that area. My mental game is crap at the moment, that's something I need to work on.
3) Not July 4th, as I'm away. I leave Wednesday, and get back Monday or Tuesday. The following weekend could work, though.

Come on now, there has to be more people from this area on these boards. I'm sure a bunch of the CT people can make the trip. The courts I assume the OP is talking about is very close to I95 so the trip won't be that bad! And some of the Mass. or NYC people can come as well. This should be fun, there are a few nice complexes around the area that are top-notch.

I'd say that gives people an exact idea of where you are coming from, no?

I'm open to other locations, and times,... but early morning at free public courts is probably the only time we can probably guarantee courts being available...

Heycal, does your response mean you're in? :)

I wouldn't consider playing tennis at 7am unless I happened to stay up very very late... Plus I'm just a lowly 3.5 with my hands full of tennis here on the banks of the Hudson River. You'd probably be better off without me, but should you absolutely need me for some reason, I would re-consider.

The idea behind this meetup is to get tennis addicted folks like you and me (heycal, i see you on the boards commenting all the time - you're either addicted to tennis or you're addicted to tennis forums - i'm hoping the former) out there, to meet up and put a name to handle, as well as get some solid hitting in...

We can set up 4.5's and 3.5's to play together well either through drills, or 4.5's will have to modify their play to play their D game (eg. play opposite handed, only serve to 3.5's strengths, drills on the ball machine, etc...)

Yes, time is a bit early, but unless someone on the forum has a private court we can meet at, I envision it would be tough to secure 2-3 courts on a public facility unless we all got there pretty early. I'm open to other ideas... I'm open to going to a more central locale, though Westchester seems ideal for folks coming from Ct, Manhanttan, Qns, Bx, and even NJ.

heycal, tell ya what: Saturday is July 4th which unfortunately happens to be my birthday (which means that on the night before, I'm hangin' & bangin' playin' jamin' in my basement with my hearing-challenged r&r'ers..till ...er, midnight?,,,or deep into the a..m.?....most likely..) the next morning, will be emerging from sleep out on the lillac-covered back deck at 10:00-ish a.m. at the earliest....

Friday, July 3rd (the "3rd-day" holiday) is a day that I'm hooked up at Armonk TC early in the morning *again* Friday. That said, I'd be more than happy to contribute a "Fourth of July" TalkTennis-Westchester-Basket bundle of goodies for you loonies for your SATURDAY shindig!; say where...when....I'll have it dropped off....inc. champagne, etc....(seriously, where?)....from there, you can pick it up and deliver it to the TW "Westchester" group with my compliments on the 4th. Your call.

I think you're confusing me with someone who would voluntarily play tennis at 7am. Like I said, unless the night before goes real real late, I can't see myself making it.

In any event, happy b-day. Is this the big 39?

You play at Armonk TC? I've played there countless times, and the owner's son and I have known eachother for the past 10 years or so. I live right by there, actually. The outdoor clay courts are top notch.

Where in CT are ya? I only know of one other poster here who lives there, who is up in New Canann. There are a good amount of CT folk here, I think.

For all your CT folks,... I play at Scalzi park often... maybe if the interest is primarily in CT, I don't mind going up to Stamford. But again, it's a public court (albeit alot more courts), so if there's alot of interest, we'll probably need to do it at a fairly early time to guarantee courts side by side.

Otherwise NickC/T1000/Dedans - we should just hook up sometime/somewhere to hit.
HeyCal, you pinged me a while ago to play.. still interested? I'll play lefty :) We'll play for pushups :p

Or better yet, CT Tennis center at Yale would be a good place to play( and closer to me lol).

I know Dedan's and Heycal wouldn't mind swinging to Pepe's after......

C'mon, it's the same courts where they have the Pilot Pen tournaments......

I've been up to Yale... I'd have to decline that offer. Stamford seems to be a central locale for CT folks, and even Westchester folks.

Yeah,... I offered the same challenge a year ago, and you're still a no show... so right now all I see is hot air :p

I don't remember any specific challenges, though I do remember some discussion of you using your other hand in a match with me or other lesser opponents.

I'm going to New Haven tonight actually, and there was talk of dining at Pepe's or the other old place nearby that might actually be a tad better. (Sal's?)

Where are the courts? Maybe I'll scout them.

Thanks. I'll keep an eye out for them. Don't know New Haven well, and neither does my hostess, so may not see them. But as you say, I guess they can't beat Flushing Meadows.

Well New Haven has a bit of an advantage wherein it's more intimate when the pros come around. The players mill about with the crowd like it's nothing. Contrast that to the US Open where they are waaaaaay more guarded.....
Otherwise, courts at Flushing are better I'd say. It's just amazing to get to play on these courts and how nice and different they are from the public courts....

Don't get me wrong.....it's not that far from the New Haven train station where you can take a taxi( if you are commuting by Metro North). Just take a peek.....

CT Tennis center is quite nice, they've got a billion courts and if we can sneak into the stadium court it would be badass. And it's right near my grandmother's place, which is good.

Pepe's is the best pizza in the world, besides Glenville Pizza in Greenwich. Truly awesome stuff.

How about next weekend?

Yes, and sorry I couldn't come out last weekend, I had some personal matters that came up and took me by surprise and I couldn't make it out.

So obviously this meetup never happened :( but I did get to hit with Jolly. Perhaps I'll repost in a week or so seeing if anyone is avail...

Jolly, thx for driving out from LI... and all those rumors about your big forehand are true :)

I needed to take 2 steps back off the baseline to handle them!

No problem man, it was great meeting up with you, and surely breaking the land speed record getting to your courts in under an hour!

Had an absolute blast hitting with you, hopefully we have another hit this summer.

I'll post up the pics of the trip and such this weekend.

For anyone in the area, nytennisaddict is about the best practice partner you could ever ask for, super fit, consistent, has all of the shots and a well rounded game, and plays very smartly. Absolutely reccomended to anyone looking for a quality player.

LPShanet and VSBabolat, maybe we could set up some dubs. Or one hour of singles, one hour of dubs. Whatever.

Did you ever play at Inwood Park in Upper Manhattan, nytennisaddict? I'm pretty sure we know each other.
Yeah, I used to play at the Inwood Park courts all the time... haven't played there in a while. I still stop by the neighborhood (did a couple of 60 mile round trip rides from Westchester to NYC), and always drive/ride by the courts :)

If you can run, and you can get the ball back... there's always stuff for me to work on... eg. there are a group of 3.5's I occasionally play lefty with, that don't know I'm really a righty - IMO it really helps me focus on my 2hbh footwork, backhand positioning relative to the ball - particularly for inside outside backhands (as folks will naturally attack my lefty 1hbh which i run around on every opp), as well as help make my left hand more equal with my right hand.

Okay, cool.

When/where? Would prefer to wait another week, but needs to be before August 7th (surgery that day). :(

Let's do it. You may want to write VSB directly, as he may not check this thread. He mentioned to me that he'd be into some doubles, I think.

I'm in Manhattan (downtown). I don't have a car, so that's also a factor.

I wouldn't mind picking you up/dropping you off at the train station near whatever courts we decide on...

I also don't mind playing at the Inwood courts at the tip of Manhattan.

What is the cost to play for an hour in Manhattan? All those ants, trying not to step on each other, competing for the same cabs, same seats on the filthy subways, avoiding the same beg/homeless nut jobs, screaming on the sidewalk, in front of the grocery stores, so they can buy their booze, and forget how awful like is without tennis.
