What is the cost to play for an hour in Manhattan? All those ants, trying not to step on each other, competing for the same cabs, same seats on the filthy subways, avoiding the same beg/homeless nut jobs, screaming on the sidewalk, in front of the grocery stores, so they can buy their booze, and forget how awful like is without tennis.

LOL so how is life in Oakland?

LOL. The cost is pretty variable. In the parks in the outdoor season, it can be free (or at least the cost of a season public park permit). In the winter, an hour of indoor can go for anywhere from $45 - $150. Still, most of those ants would tell you that there's no place else in the world they'd rather be. Even if you do have to work a little harder to get your tennis in...

You still around, D?

You two would have a great hit!

I am still around, and have been playing frighteningly well for the past month or so, so if you want to hit, let's do it soon before I go back to sucking again.

Shoot me a txt or e-mail.

Westchester...land of the most beautiful.

Generally the most beautiful women between ages 30-50 here have wedding rings on their fingers. (I realize "most beautiful" could refer to other things about life here, but I choose to focus on this one.)

One wonders, are these women married because they were more beautiful and thus snatched off the market, or do they work like hell to make and keep themselves beautiful so they don't get dumped for a younger woman?

Let's get out there some time. I'm impressed by your marathon training, but personally lean towards marathons of the television-watching and eating variety.

Thx, LP,
Training is definitely starting to get harder (eg. typical week 4x8M daily+1x14-20M)... i could probably get away with less training, but I wouldn't be content with just finishing (I'm only planning on doing this 1 time - just don't like running that much!).

Let's definitely play some time (i can usually squeeze in a day of tennis during the week - in lieu of a scheduled short run (eg. 4M)). Where are you traveling from? Does inwood work for you?

Wow....that's a pretty serious training regimen. I get tired just thinking about it. I'm in Manhattan, so like a typical city boy, I have no idea where Inwood is. I'll look it up and see how to get there. You can reach me off-thread for further arranging.

hehe, thx... actually i'm following an "adv-beginner" marathon training regimen. Adv runners are running 70-100M a week (which is really impressive - since I'm struggling with this regimen).

Inwood Park is at the very northern tip of manhattan (some folks think it's in the bronx). Just stay on the west side, all the way up to ~207th street, north of the George Washington Bridge. The A train on the westside gets you there.

Oh, THAT Inwood!:) When you first mentioned Inwood, I assumed you were referring to a place out Long Island, since JR comes in from that direction. Yes, I'm familiar with that Inwood, as I went to HS in the South Bronx. Never played at that park. But I can get the A train. I live all the way downtown.

reviving an old thread... i took a 4 year hiatus (ran a marathon, close to becoming a full instructor in martial arts (jkd, fma, muythai), purple in bjj, and coached alot of my kids soccer/baseball games).

getting smoked (2,2) at the end of summer, by a coworker (4.0 retriever) got my juices flowing again. (i avenged my loss in the fall (0,1)).

who's in? i'm sure there are lots new folks in the 4 years i've been away from the forums :)

I'm from Rockland County. I play #1 for the RCC tennis team. Let me get done with finals this upcoming week, and we can play during break. It would be easier if you could come to Rockland as I don't have a car, but I can try to get to Westchester.

let's try to figure something out over the winter break.... I'll be off from work for 2 weeks starting the 19th. maybe we'll even get lucky with a couple 40+ degree days and be able to play outside.

I don't think enough people realize how pleasant tennis can be on a non-windy day even when the temps are down in the high 30's.

I played a very pleasant game of softball last Saturday, with a touch of wind and the temperature around 42 on a sunny day. And there is a lot of standing around in softball. So tennis in those conditions with all that moving around is even better.

Egads!....global warming and 'paddle' don't mix....

Lol, I played paddle for a couple years, fun as hell in the cold winter (especially the post game drinking)... but I definitely had to quit tennis for the winter, otherwise my groundies would get messed up,... or I had to hit nothing but chip returns (which doesn't cut it in the upper divisions).

50 degree paddle means alot of balls are going over the wire and/or winners being returned off the screens :p

D,

Do you have a good track workout for tennis

I'm looking to take my white-man speed to the next level.

J
I haven't been running much in the last 4 years (after finishing the marathon),... but when I was (and what I plan to resume again) is:

* first build up to 5-7mi continuous for 4-5d a week (logic is that you want to prep the tendons and ligaments to be ready for the hard work of sprints)
* work toward 10x400m at 60s with 3m rest in between (I came up with this number based on an article where I read that andy murray ran this with the british olympic team). that said, the fastest I ever got was ~ 70s/400 for 10 reps.

So while this requires some speed to reach 60s, this won't actually build tennis speed (since we're typically running only 2-7meters in any one direction), but tennis endurance (imagine that to win every point required 10-15 shots).

* I found doing agility drills (eg. ladder drills) with different footwork patterns, suicides in a star pattern for time (180 degree change of directions), etc to develop efficiency in changing direction (and accelerating from a dead stop) will be far more valuable in shaving off time on the tennis court.

* Building leg strength (by doing sprints), or by doing exercises like single leg squats prep my legs for handling the stress of extreme start stops. Sprints build linear strength/speed. single leg squats build strength laterally as well linearly.

yeah, deads and sgl leg romanians are great at building up the posterior chain... which is especially usefully when needing to stop and pushback 180 degrees, or anytime we need to backpedal (eg. run around forehand, overheads, etc...). at some point I used to run 2 miles backwards to develop this (read about boxers like sugar ray leonard doing alot of backwards running for backpedaling speed/endurance)

Haha, yes paddle is about the apres' paddle "hang" afterwards. They have 'lo-bounce' balls now for warm weather. Actually imho I think paddle and tennis can co-exist in that paddle cleans up your volleys and on returns you don't have to chip returns in paddle unless you're facing someone with a major kick-off-the-screens type of serve, and yes I'm talking the top divison on Tuesday night as well (although some noteables have skedaddled to the Fairfield League):

Kick and topslice serves are effective in paddle :)

What team/div did you play for? I used to play on a Bronxville Village team (div 3, and some div 2)

Ah, Paxton Road. www.bronxvillepaddle.com Beers in the hut or at Fogerty's on Kraft Ave. afterwards. Good stuff.

Back in the day, D-1 for Greenburgh. Also played the Thursday Night "Northern Westchester" league for Birchwood (Chappaqua).
Yes sir, Fogerty's is good stuff!

Whoa D1, hard core. I've played a couple "fun" matches with D1 guys, I couldn't hang... all of them were former D1 college tennis players (which I'm guessing you are), and way more consistent.

I've played many a cold match at Greenburgh :)

Let's hit sometime!

Thought you guys were playing tennis!

The heck with tennis. I want to hear more about paddle! Love the 'glamour' of the game, under the lights with breath visible… I first played about 3 years ago, at the freshly cooked Ardsley CC where a friend is a member, and have only played maybe a dozen times since, but sure did like it.

What's with the doubles only thing though? How come no one plays singles?

Not even sure how to play paddle???

I used to hang around that area of Westchester with friends to play tennis. I remember going to sneak on the Ardsley tennis courts and getting kicked off by some kids who figured we didn't live there and they were right. lol. We went to play in Bronxville most of the time where we legally could play.

Nowadays I worry people from other towns will play on my area courts and monopolize them. That happened in a town nearby me in which one large group went there during the summer starting at around 6 am and held the courts for many hours. What goes around comes around I guess. lol.

met up with topspin to hit in Rockland in an amazing 55 degree day 2 days after Xmas!

3-6, 2-0.. before we had to stop. some great hitting and consistency from topspin. looking forward to the next hit.

http://youtu.be/n5-ZXt7tuhU

feedback welcome! (though i already have a laundry list for myself).

after editing, I realized that we tennis players spend more time resting than actual playing! 56 min vid edited down to 20 min of actually playing. almost 2-1 rest to work... we're just a bunch of slackers :p

I watched this clip a few weeks when it was posted, and thought "Wow. Look at that serve! There is no way I can do that myself, since I'm even less experienced in paddle than as a 3.5 level tennis player, and I had neither the skills or the young back needed to pull off an American Twist serve, the tennis equivalent of this. This will definitely be out of reach for me."

Then I had a chance to play paddle last week (Ardsley). Just for fun, I decided to try one casual effort at this serve, figuring I'll try it once and then never again after I fail miserably. But it worked like a charm! Spinning one way, then hitting the ground and spinning in the other direction. Totally unreturnable, at least by the similarly lame folks I was playing with.

Now, I'm not saying I could do this consistently enough to use it on most every serve, but the fact that I could do it all, and that it seemed fairly easy, was astounding to me. So thank you for posting.

What's with the doubles only thing though? How come no one plays singles?

Still like to the know the answer to this one.
