western grip flat vs. topspin shots

Can I still hit a flat or penetrating shot with my forehand using a wester grip?

I can hit with lots of spin when I'm in rallies, but when I'm inside the baseline or attacking a short-ball I need more pace and a flater shot. Is this harder to do with a western grip?

You can't hit a completly flat shot but you can hit it flater and with less topspin. Instead of starting your racquet low and coming up through the ball, start it just under the height of the ball and hit through it. It's tough at first if you're used to hitting topspin but keep practicing and it will come.

Yes, though its easier with higher balls. Hit it with a level swingpath.

A flat shot is bad for a short ball if you intend to put a lot of power on it...
