Western media talking only about teenage final and not CYGS

Have been listening to several media outlets including NPR, CNN. CBS and everyone has a long segment on tennis talking about the routes taken by Raducanu and Fernanadez

The segment shows highlight of their matches and their teams etc at length.

Then when they are wrapping up the segment, they are saying ‘Finally, in closing, we also have the Serbian Djokovic chasing the grand slam, which is winning all 4 majors in a calendar year’

The western media bias is telling

Trying to market and hype the future probably. I don't know how women's tennis can reach the heights of the 80s, 90s, 00s. Its been going downhill since. The men's game will never reach the heights of the popularity it cones did either

ESPN has been hyping Novak's run nonstop for 12 days now. And they're as "Western Media" as Western media gets.

Not to mention the obvious fact that the previews for the women's final is happening now because the finalists are set. Check back tonight and the headlines will flip to the men's final.

i agree ESPN is doing a fair job but they are not a mainstream news outlet

NPR & CNN also have the luxury of making this about a story of immigrants and the journeys both have taken up to this point.

This highlighting of unorthodox backgrounds is, as we all know, is far more intriguing of a sociological story than 'Serbian man plays tennis really good, oh also his opponent might be a domestic abuser??'

NPR & CNN are political outlets offering social commentary.

See this is why any result in the men’s draw will be good.
The CYGS will get so much attention don’t worry but young players making the step will also be big.

Also I doubt if Djokovic loses it would be big in US due too Med being Russian

Who even watches women's tennis outside the die hards now? Its not like its going to be water cooler talk among casuals like the Big 3 were a few years ago. People I would work who didn't follow tennis were talking about the Djokovic/Nadal slam finals LOL

2 teenagers making the final is a big story. Novak winning his first 5 matches where he was the overwhelming favorite is not a big story. There's nothing to talk about yet.

Check back after he wins the CYGS. If there's still no attention on it, then complain.
10000%. Alcaraz beating Tsitsipas was the biggest talking point on the men’s side this USO. I remember when Djokovic beat AO in 08 it was huge. When something becomes the norm it’s expected.
I remember in 07 Fed won a slam and the news in Ireland just said Fed won his GS today as if it was casual

So just because ONE news segment wasn’t all about Joker that means “the western media bias is telling”? They’ve covered it more in-depth in other segments. Plus the women’s F is tomorrow, Joker still has to make the F.
it is not just CNN

That is the reason I mentioned CBS and NPR in addition

You do realize we have 24 hour news cycles right? Just because you caught one news segment talking about other tennis related events doesn’t mean they haven’t been talking about Joker’s possible CYGS.

The women's final is first. They know who's playing and it's 2 teenagers. If Djokovic wins tonight the press will step up. Let him get there first before lambasting them.

They've spent all year talking about him, cut them a little slack!

The media has an obsession with new young players bursting onto the scene and winning tournaments. Even this forum, other forums like r/tennis, and social media all have this weird obsession with new young players winning tournaments. Not sure why.

when media talks about djokovic, people complain all they can talk about is djokovic or the big 3
now when there is some different news to talk about, people complain they aren't talking about djokovic

a lot of media sucks but honestly the trend of bashing everything they do as bias is just as bad

You actually should get your news from as wide a range of sources as possible. In any event, the topic is about the parochial nature of the Western media, so you're way off base.

Those evil Western media. Much better to get your news from unbiased outlets like RT Russia and People's Daily.

I don't know about Media but here in India Djokovic's quest for CYGS is HUGE on Social Media. Dude trended top 5 for the country in his semis. And that was in the morning when almost nobody would watch, Djokovic still had 10k tweets about him.

I am convinced that if Djokovic was representing the UK or US, the run he is having would have got much more attention and media hype in the popular western media. As it is, Emma represents the West much more than Novak, so naturally the scale of what she's achieved, a very unique and impressive victory, is creating this huge sense of wonder and excitement in the West. For Eastern countries Djokovic is probably the one with considerably more hype because he is their guy. It's a cultural/national bias, not the greatest thing but it's not malicious or negative in its nature. The East needs to work on making their media more popular globally so our athletes can get more recognition and support.

Dylan Alcott (AUS) just won the Golden Slam without much hype.
Either Australia is too eastern or Nike and others do not find him marketable enough to invest in more articles about him.

It's a far more interesting story.

Like it or not, but winning a CYGS is more of a niche achievement outside of tennis circles.

An all-teenage final between a couple of exciting and dynamic breakout players is going to have a far broader appeal.

I'm British. I much prefer Rafael Nadal to Andy Murray. I don't see it as nationalities at all.

People are tired of Big 3 in general that's all. All the history just blurs into one.
But teenage qualifier winning ranked 150? That's fresh. People want fresh news.
To me it only made sense because it was a done final and most news is babbling about history being made with a possible CYGS! I would definitely cut off the herd news for something new in these little girls actually making history of their own! ;)

How would you explain Emma headlining the sporting news in the West and Djokovic being the main topic in the East?
Is Djokovic the main topic in "the East". Define the East? Traditionally, not even the Socialist Republic of Yugoslavia, of which Serbia was a part, was defined as being in the East.

To the east of Germany basically, stopping at China. That's what I meant, not saying this is the definition of 'the East'.

True.
Western media try to kill him with kindness.
Djokovic is sitting in his dressing room thinking "WTF?!?", will be very confused this evening.
Nothing to do with anything other than Djokovic, as good as he is, not being captivating for anyone. Even the great majority of his fans just want to see him win but rarely talk about how he gets there.
