What’s the consensus on using a dampener in a 18x20 racket?

Do most still use a dampener in this string pattern ? Or, is the string pattern so dense it doesn’t feel necessary?

The consensus (and science) says dampeners only affect the sound, which is beneficial because a lot of polys make pingy sounds.

I personally never used one in my 18x20, just string a little looser for greater comfort

Yes--but it really depends on the size of the dampener. With my open pattern racquets, doesn't matter--but with the 18/20 I have to use a much smaller dampener or else it messes with the mains and makes them too tight-feeling.

I use the small, square Babolat Custom Damp

+1 for the Babolat Custom Damp > with the center piece removed. Or the Prince Tour Damp ... small and soft so they don't cause a tight feel... just good ping blockers if that's what you're after.

This is what I use (Prince) and they are perfect in my 18/20

I use it to change the sound at ball contact in all my racquets - used a 18x20 for five years. A dampener doesn’t do anything else for me.
