What a great career Rafa.....but

It's clear that he is probably at the beginning of the end with those knees. I think it's been great watching him but that jerking and all that running around backhands is surely going to cut his career short...so here is saying farewell to one of the greats of all time...especially on Clay.

Or maybe, just maybe, it's not the knees but the fact that the other guy was playing well. I mean Nadal won a major less than a month ago and now, after playing 0 matches since then, his knees are bothering him? Nadal had a bad day while Darcis was playing really well. Also, it's tough to say farwell to Nadal as he just went on an amazing run, winning 7 out of 9 tournaments.

@Def 1, @chatt_town 0.

Give it up, Nadal Children. Just like the Rosol match, he was running like a gazelle. It was the talent of the opponent and the speed of the surface that did him in.

Well darcis is nearly 30 years old and is below 100 in the world. I can understand if nadal loses against a guy with a big game like rosol but darcis is 5-9 and has nothing to hurt a guy like nadal (or any top player-do you think darcis could ever beat ferrer or murray?)

nadal played **** poor.

Did you watch? First off, Darcis was crushing his 1st serves, FHs, and BHs. And getting to net at times and volleying effectively.

If Nadal didn't play well it was because he was under constant pressure.

I agree that Nadal played a terrible match...none of the usual fist pumps, amazing shots. Inability to get the important points (eg 2 wasted tiebreaks) a general feeling that he didn't even want to be playing that match.

these threads show just how stupid this generation is..he won FO two weeks ago!!! People have been saying his career were over since 2005!!! He will be back and he will win another major....and if it is the French guess what, it still counts!

yea, maybe you are right...but lets see just how many majors he misses after these last 8 matches. Lets see if he comes back for the US Open or the year end tourney and even the AO for next year. I think all that jerking and running around backhands while impressive during the French is obviously shortening his career.

Nadal has been running away from his backhand like it's on fire because that shot is painful for his knee. When he's feeling good and his knee is somewhat manageable, he can still hit his backhand like he used to. It's no coincidence he was so desperate to run around his backhand against Darcis after he said bending down low on grass hurts his knees the most.

I posted this on another thread, but it seems appropriate to post it here.

Boris Becker had a few thoughts during the match and after.
QUOTE from http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/tennis/23040937
Boris Becker, three-time Wimbledon champion

"This is a big, big shock. Nadal has come back from injury so strongly this year but he was playing mainly on clay. Grass is very different compared to the other surfaces. Your movement is different and you have to have healthy legs because you're changing direction, you're slipping and sliding.

"Even though he won all those tournaments, Nadal had been struggling somewhat with the knee and I always thought he might struggle at Wimbledon this year. I almost thought that he should contemplate not playing because he was out for a long time and you shouldn't underestimate it.

"Early on in the match I thought, 'This isn't the Nadal I've seen in Paris, this isn't the Nadal that won Rome'. Credit to Darcis; he took his chance, played aggressively, wasn't afraid, went for the groundstrokes and went for the serve. He kept his composure, wasn't getting too nervous, wasn't getting too crazy out there and and ended up achieving something you don't do every day.

"In a way, maybe it's a good thing for Nadal because if he had been knocked out in, say, the fourth round or quarter-finals it would have put a lot of strain on the legs. Now he has a few more days and weeks off and he can think about his schedule for the rest of the year.

"Nadal wasn't confident in his movement - normally that's his best part. He wasn't confident, he was hitting a lot of unforced errors and I was wondering, 'Why is he making these errors? The ball was there!'. Then I observed a bit better and noticed his foot placement wasn't the way it normally is, especially when he had to move. When he was set, he was good. But when he had to move, he wasn't the same and he didn't have that solid base he had on the clay.

"If you have a knee problem, grass is the worst surface. Hard courts are not as bad because you have a firm position, you can put your foot down and stand up to hit the ball - the bounce is higher so you don't have to bend as low. I wouldn't worry about Nadal playing on hard courts or indoors, but I always thought grass was an issue.

"In terms of his whole career, he has answered the questions. He won the French Open and, in my opinion, is the player of the year so far. He is surrounded by great people and I'm not going to suggest anything to him but, from an outside point of view, he definitely has to reconsider his future on grass."
