What a start for the old guys

Even I think that 2019 is likely to be the year in which younger players make a real impression. But if this is the last stand for the old guard, they are raging against the dying of the light.

First week of 2019:

In Pune, Anderson (32), Darcis (34, almost 35), and Karlovic (39, almost 40) through to the semis, and Simon (just turned 34) is two holds of serve from joining them. Even if he loses, Paire is 29.

In Doha, Djokovic (31) and Bautista Agut (30) through to the semis. Berdych (33) playing his quarter-final now. None of the players left in is younger than 26.

In Brisbane, Chardy (31, almost 32) and Nishikori (29) through to the semis. Tsonga (33) and Raonic (28) still to play their quarter-finals. This is the only tournament with young players left - De Minaur (19, almost 20) and Mededev (22, almost 23).

Particularly noteworthy is that Tsonga and Berdych have both made encouraging starts as they try to rescue their careers after injury at a fairly advanced age. I think Berdych has a decent shot of making the final in Doha, though we'll have to see how his fitness holds up.

"Meet the new boss. Same as the old boss."

Update: Simon beat Paire in Pune. So all four semi-finalists in Pune are 32 or older: 32, 34, 34, and 39!

And Berdych off to a flyer against Herbert in Doha, leading 5-2 with a double break in the first set.

I think it's quite obvious 35 is the new marker for pros. They're not thinking of retiring prior. It use to be 30-31. How things have changed.

Ivo will inspire Isner and Kandy to continue until 36-38 for certain now.

Christ I hope not. Imagine how many rules Isner will have had changed by the time he's 38.
