What are controversies in Djokovic’s career? Is it possible to list them all?

G.O.A.T.
I made a post about listing all the controversies in Federer’s career and there are hardly 10 posts on there as Federer barely generated any. However if we tried to list all of Djokovic’s controversies in his career including small ones, I have a feeling the list would be a very long one.

Djokovic has so many categories of controversies - racquet breaking angry fits on court, angry outbursts at box, yelling/hitting balls at linespeople, bouncing the ball a lot, MTOs, hard to tell if he takes unjustified timeouts when behind, vaccine/COVID stand, comments from parents about players, new age thoughts, weird coach, rumored affairs, making fun of players early, withdrawals early career, political nationalistic comments, PTPA positions, etc. It might be hard to make even a top 10 list.

Compelling player to say the least! Not a wonder that so many love or hate him - he evokes strong emotions.

2006 Davis Cup - MTO controversy
2008 USO , 2009 AO - injury and retirement controversy

2016 - Pepe Imaz and nanny controversy

2020 - USO dsq
2021 AO - Injury controversy
2021 FO - Outburst
2021 OG- outburst and withdrawal
2022 AO - Deportation controversy
2025 AO - Injury and tv boycott controversy

Federer's legacy lives on.
Djokovic's legacy is tarnished

Do you want the ones that bother me or the ones that bother most people?

I don't really care that he stepped out on his wife. That is between them. But it definitely counts as a controversy

The stuff that bothers me:

*Adria Tour
*Far Right/war criminal connections
*Kermode/Gaudenzi
*platforming pseudoscience
*on court behavior (too much to list but I'm more concerned with the screaming/racquet smashing near opponents than the USO DQ which was clearly an accident)

Boring and monotonous game.
Cringe gestures like bewb throwing, violin, hanging up the phone etc
Attention and popularity seeking
Generating or wading into controversies and playing the victim card.
Djoko sr
Antagonistic and offensive behavior towards the crowd, other players and officials.
Lack of class.
Big chip on the shoulder.

Most controversial is winning more Slams than Federer and Nadal. Their respective fans have always had difficulty accepting that.

If that was all, I think Fedal fans would have made peace with it the way Fedfans made peace with Rafa getting +2 on him.

But Djoko's behavior is very aberrant compared to other players. You have to go to the fringes or into the deep past to find players who acted like Djokovic does.

2006 French Open quarter final vs. Nadal: Djokovic loses the first two sets, 4-6, 4-6, and then retires during the first game of the third set. Djokovic said afterwards that he felt in control of the match, which resulted in a lot of mockery.

That was Nadal's 58th win in a row on clay. Nadal had just turned 20 years old.

Many of them are heavily exaggerated and sometimes even made up.

He did have them, of course, but a lot of them would be barely mentioned if it was someone else.

For example, the racket breaking and outbursts on court, basically everyone has them. Safin was the most-liked player on tour (won the award a few times before Federer started winning it) at one point and the one that broke the most rackets and nobody made a fuss about the racket breaking.

I don't know if it's a "controversy" but it was a very stupid thing to do the post he made before AO 2022, if he had just kept quiet NOTHING would have happened, he would have played the event and likely won. And if you post something wait until you are inside the country. It was just completely unnecessary, such a stupid move. Nothing that happened after that those days would have happened without all the backlash.

This is fans fault that they idolize safin. But he has pretty bad attitude as well .

Djokovic will not be compared to safins of this world but Federer. Few days back op created a thread on Federer and there was literally nothing to write about. For Djokovic , there is a lot to write and fans are not exaggerating. Some haters might but not the fans .

Agree

I think the Safin adulation is misplaced as well. He was Kyrgios before Kyrgios

Adria Tour is a big one. All the stuff around Covid really, like him apparently going to an interview with Covid.

ooooo I forgot that one, that's truly one of the worst

Either he laughed and breathed on everyone knowing he had COVID--or he faked his positive test to avoid the shot

Being a big hypocrite.

Having said that, I have always appreciated Djokovic's controversial character which however is real without filters.
From this point of view I have always seen Nadal and especially Federer as very constructed characters.

Djokovic might stab you but he does it while looking into your eyes, whereas the other two do it behind your back.

Even the way he accepts defeats has always made me think he is more transparent.
Even on many occasions when he continued to beat Fedal I saw a sort of sincere embarrassment on his part at the moment of shaking hands.

You are very right. I hope no one says nationalist is controversial.

Now being nationalist so much that you are friendly with far right people with criminal charges, that is where people should be stopped from having opinions.
There's quite big difference between a nationalist and a patriot. Djokovic is the later. He always promoted the brotherhood of all ex-Yugoslavian people and many hardcore nationalists hold it against him.

The fact that he was at a same function and photographed with some sketchy people doesn't prove he's friendly with them.

He showed his cowardice by not playing the resumption of the 2018 Wimbledon semi-finals outdoors, on a sunny day.

That was in December 2021, when he apparently had Covid again (and thus arrived in Australia a few weeks later with a vaccine exemption), yet he had been out and about in the week after apparently testing positive.

As you say, this means that he either had Covid and went out and about spreading it, or he didn't really have Covid and it was a fake positive test as a reason to get out of being vaccinated AND to enter Australia.

There is a lot to write about for Nadal.
I recently watched the 2006 Monte Carlo final. That was a funny one :D

Nadal took what was effectively a MTO before the match had even started, i.e. after the warm up, but before they walked out to start the first game (so it wasn't counted ), which made Federer nervous and edgy and Nadal won the first set 6-2. Nadal served for the second set at 5-4, and had a set point, but Federer finally found some momentum and won the second set 7-6 to level the match. Federer then went up an early break in the third set, before Nadal took a MTO (this time it counted ;)). Nadal immediately breaks Federer back, holds his own serve, and goes on to win the third set 6-3. The fourth set was a bit crazy, Nadal up 3-0 (with 2 breaks), Federer gets it back to 4-4, and has 5-4 and 6-5 leads. Federer also had an early lead in the tiebreak (3-0 and 4-2, if I remember right), but it was Nadal who won the fourth set tiebreak, and the match with it. 6-2, 6-7, 6-3, 7-6. It was Nadal's 4th win over Federer in 5 matches, and the 1 loss to Federer was after Nadal had led by 2 sets and a break.

Federer, used to being invincible at the time, was annoyed as heck by Nadal. You could really see it.

@vive le beau jeu !

Nah, Nadal got away with his issues in the media for some reason, while Djokovics are kinda exaggerated.
Because Nadal is smart with diplomacy, even when he's being a bit edgy. Djokovic seems to thrive on controversy and stirring the pot. Nadal likes order, Djokovic likes chaos.

For example, the whole 2022 Australia business was Djokovic's doing. Nadal even warned him in 2020 about what was coming up, basically advising "don't be silly, don't be stupid" about vaccines if you want to play all events, yet what did Djokovic do?

Countless fights vs the fans. Calling fans something like "now you will eat my $;+*+""

Holding Adrian tour

USA Open default

Deportation

Being friendly with far right Serbian groups.

There are far too many to count but this is the shortest high impact list I formed..
Following Andrew Tate for a nanosecond? I relember that one infuriated you.
