What are the most prestigious master events ???

1. Rome (has way more history than IW)
2. Indian Wells
3. Monte Carlo (again, a nod to the history of the event)

Miami used to be epic in the 80's and 90's, but it's diminished a lot in stature, maybe because they slowed down conditions there to a pitiful level.

Miami courts are faster than those in IW. It's humidity which makes the ball travel slower through the air than in IW, and there's little they can do about that.

OT

I think IW has been the most prestigious MS1000 for the past 10 or so years. The least important one is Paris.

Of course I am biased being an American.

I would have to think Cinncy is in the top ranks because the event is utterly superb and right before US open.

Also think Indian Wells is a great event. I have heard the Miami masters is not as good.

I am guessing Rome and Monte Carlo would be the top clay ones.

The lesser ones must be the ones after the US open that nobody really pays much attention too.

Sorry OP, Cincy isn't a masters. It's a slam. :)

I did hear that, it took them that long to upgrade, I guess cause the players voted Indian Wells as their favorite tournament which is why they decided to upgrade.

Indian Wells has the best facilities out of all the Masters tournament, players have said that they feel happiest at Indian Wells.

Actually, in their annual vote for best ATP Masters tournament of the year, the players have consistently voted for Shanghai ever since it came into existence in 2009!

As masters don't really hold prestige, compared to slams, except in this little bubble called talk tennis, prestigious = best.

Well, the ATP and the players clearly don't agree with you otherwise they wouldn't bother playing them and the ATP wouldn't bother awarding the players who win them a whopping 1,000 ranking points!

Wow this thread as huge various opinions all over the place ??

Looks like the winner is Indian Wells

Yes the Miami master event used to be far bigger and better in the 90's and 80's.
Rome is utterly bankrupt city. Still most prestigious clay event around outside Paris.
Not sure why Cincy is getting only mixed love. I guess because its in Cinncy lol

The most prestigious probably is Rome Masters.

As far as the best here in the US, in my point of view would be as follows: IW > Cinci > Miami.

I've been to all 3, and that's my ranking. Never been to the other Masters, outside of my country. I hated Miami oPEN. nEVER coming back

I hear Miami is not as good as it used to be. That is why Fed has skipped it a few times !!!

I agree that Rome, IW and Cincy are the tops

Rome is an amazing city but utterly bankrupt and falling apart rapidly.

or maybe Mirka does not want him looking at hot bikini bunnies on the beach ;) naw i'm kidding but to your point, I think it's because Federer is older, his mentality is becoming more like a old man in always complaining about everything nowadays, and I think he can't handle the humidity down in Florida. Humidity is worse then dry desert heat, I dare anybody who lives in a dry area to come to Florida, they don't know what hot and oppressive. Fed does not live in Florida like Serena Williams and Andy Murray so that is probably the main reason, everyone else seems to like playing in Miami.

The advantage that Miami has over Indian Wells is that Serena Williams has put them over as her favorite tournament and we have seen more celebs make appearences at the Miami Open.

The center court at cincy is beautiful on a blue sky day. It's almost surreal looking to me, when the camera pans up and its endless blue skies

Prestige is all about perception, and for most people it's a mixture of history and current quality, but places like Talk Tennis have their own criteria. The first is "has my favourite won it?", with the added qualifiers of "how often, and what about their rivals?". Other important criteria are "is it shown on a tv channel I have easy access to, or at least in a convenient time-zone for me to follow".

We all have our faves, for a number of reasons. I'd say the weakest is Paris, because the very best players are resting up for the WTFs, or it's in the time of year when players are recovering from surgery. Next to suffer is Monte Carlo because it's not mandatory. Mind you, with so many of the top players now eligible to skip at least one Masters without a doctor's note, it evens up a bit.

Everything else is about favourite surface for the tennis you like to watch, or that your favourite likes to play on. I know IW looks pretty, but it all feels a bit fake for me to have prestige. Ironically, the slightly crumbly vibe of Miami lends it a feel of greater history for me! I'd say Cincy is top for hard courts, and Rome for clay, but it's very subjective.
