I like following celebrity couture on Bravo.
Watching pro sports and listening to sports radio.
Buying fashion sneakers at full retail then trying to sell them to hypebeast poseur kids for like six hundred percent more, but telling my non-hypebeast poseur friends it was nine hundred percent markup.
Reading tabloids for the horoscope, relashenshep and bizniss advice.
Drinking chardonnay with mah gurlz on the porch.

I have exactly five extratenniscular interests:
talking to cool, funny people and pretending to be triggered by their political incorrectness.
Awkwardly not acknowledging racial differences, and telling my afroamerican friends that i do not see color.
I like seeking out a safe space when i am triggered.
I like eating comfort foods even though they are too crummy, bland and creamy for my actual culinary tastes.

I became a math geek so I could do physics. Eventually branched out into engineering and biology also. Math is powerful stuff, but without scientific applications, I would hate it.

My youngest two are in 11th and 12th grade now, and most of their coursework is outsourced: a mix of dual enrollment college classes and online stuff. In their younger years, their mom and I were their classroom teachers for lots of courses. It's not too hard to put together a curriculum that is worlds better than the public schools.

More and more distance learning resources are becoming available all the time for parents who prefer not to be the classroom teacher in every subject. I don't mind teaching at all, but after a while, it's nice to let someone else be the "bad cop" (authority figure who gives tests and issues grades) while I get to be the "good cop" (helps with homework and sympathizes with student).

Our family participates in several different shooting sports: F-Class, action pistol, steel challenge, etc. If I recall, I hold NRA Expert classifications in pistol, smallbore rifle, and defensive pistol. I think I hold sharpshooter classifications in F-Class and High Power sporting rifle. Still working toward Expert in those.

My wife, daughter, and sons all hold Expert classifications in pistol and F-Class. Yes, they are all better shots than I am. My wife and daughter have posted perfect scores (200-20X) in high power rifle.

Mathgeek, thanks for the thoughtful, and EXCELLENT response. You're brilliant to circumvent the public school system, while saving $20-30K per kid per year on independent/private schooling.

And the shooting...I like all of this...
... except Defensive Pistol.
You see, i talk to my instruments, and I can sometimes be undiplomatically critical. It is not healthy for me if the pistol acts the victim and makes all manner of excuses.
I prefer working with "rational/humble pistol", "small-intriguing rifles", and i always look forward to spending time with "self-soothing bow and arrow".

We did pay for one year of private schooling a while back. We found it to be completely unsatisfactory. The teachers were marginally better qualified than public school teachers, and academic rigor was a bit higher. But the unsatisfactory drawbacks were:
1. Even after promising that the spheres of parenting and school were different, the school made a big deal of it when we asked for the children to be excused from certain activities due to objections of faith and conscience. It only happened 4 times total with four children in the school over the course of the year. Public schools never had a problem with things like, "No, my children cannot draw pictures of Aztec gods in art class. Please allow them an alternate assignment." But the private school balked, kicked our children out, and suggested we home school.
2. Curricula are still "one size fits all." It's great if the curricula chosen fits your child, but we prefer the flexibility of tailoring each subject to each child. With home schooling, if one math curriculum is not working for a child, a parent can quickly dump it and pick another one. We found that boys tend to like reading different books for English and history than girls. We found that each teen likes to pick their own foreign language. Etc.
3. Sports were still more important than academics in the school culture.
4. Looking good was more important than being good in the school culture.
5. There was an "in crowd" of parents and teachers who held tremendous influence. Their favored students had license to do all sorts of misbehavior.

Ha! A couple of factors have me considering taking up archery: 3-D shooting is popular with the guys at a church we're attending, and there is a "senior games" nearby that includes an annual archery component. As I move away from several sports due to joint issues (singles tennis, Ultimate, basketball), I am trying to find some new sports which are interesting, easy to practice locally, easy on my body, fun, and not too expensive. Having a look at archery.
