'The Johns - Sex for sale, and the men who buy it' by Victor Malarek.

The absolute sickness that human beings are capable of is beyond mind boggling.

^ Dan Fante's LA is so different from John Fante's. Both speak mostly of the seedy, lower class LA, but... You'll see. I think the Bruno Dante trilogy goes in this order: Chump Change... Mooch... Spitting Off Tall Buildings. Dan is really good. Super raw, very original voice although you can see his dad's influence. Bruno Dante, not sure how closely he's based on Dan Fante, but in the novels, his dad is very much based on John Fante, and in Chump Change, Bruno looks for one of his dad's earlier novels called Ask the Wind at a Venice Blvd used book store.

You'll like them. I almost want to say read Mooch first. It's superior to Chump Change, which I just finished last night. Actually, you might even love them. Tell me what you think. :)

Ernest, sorry for the late response. Like you, I do take reading and books very seriously. I will check out the trilogy per your recommendation.

Since I live down here, I am particularly interested in L.A. area-based literature. Fante, of course, is a starting point. I was really into Ellroy for a while. I mostly read non-fiction. Ever read Kevin Starr's volumes on California history? He just came out with a volume on 1950s-early1960s California. L.A. seemingly changes almost every month. It would be impossible to write the L.A. novel at this point. Drive-by shootings in Compton? Old news.

Does that avatar have anything to do with the book? I mean is that a scene from hell?

today I started: "They call me Maximon, Satan in a tie and hat"

written by a spanish priest named to a small diocese in indigenous towns in Guatemala, and shares his experiences performing tons of exorcisms and how false idols (witchcraft, ancient mayan ceremonies, etc) are a gateway to evil. This 'Maximon' is an ancient post-mayan "saint" to whom indigenous people offer cigars, alcohol, money, etc, so he will do favors for them, both good and evil. This character is a product of mixture of cultures, a blend of christian beliefs and ancient mayan, and while many consider him/it to be harmless and even goofy, the author shares his stories about how it is everything but harmless. Really interesting, even more so if you believe in those things, but even if you dont, the stories he shares are reaaaaally creepy, a good read for anyone who enjoys horror stories.

I reread Harry Potter 7 again. It was amazing. Finished in two days and I feel empty and bit depressed. I have been reading since I was 10. Oh well I will get over it. It is an amazing series though .

I'm reading "Know-It-All" by A.J. Jacobs. Hilarious book about a guy trying to read the entire encyclopedia from A to Z. And you also get to learn some cool stuff. For example, did you know that Vladimir Nabakov was a tennis coach in Berlin before he became a writer?

malakas -- how are you getting on with Celine?

cc

hi cc!Sorry for the late response!

Simply amazing! One of the few books that will stay with me long after.
Celine's prose is one of the most vivid I have ever read.
And so alive his pictures of the WW1 battlefields,Afrika jungle, life in New York and the french suburban life.
I'm not suprised that his book has affected authors such as Roth,Miller,Sartre and Kerouarc and even the Doors have written a song about it.
10/10 from me.

"Sophie's World" by Jostein Gardner

For those of you that haven't heard of it, it's basically a summation of philosophy from pre-Socratic times to modern philosophy, packaged nicely within a story that is in itself philosophical. Written very well, and best of all, it's clear easy to read even though it's been translated from Norwegian.

Feel jealous or feel sorry for you?:p Good luck!

I have it,but only read a part of it,it's a big and a bit tiring book. But I would definitely reccomend the movie!:) It's a fast and easy guide to the history of philosophy. They made us watch it in school.

I've just finished the "Bel-Ami" by Guy de Maupassant which was all in all a sypathetic book and now I'm ready to start Middlemarch by George Elliot. Not sure if I'll finish it though because my friends have told me it's quite long and boring.:?
