I didnt know what section to put this under but its for my college work.

I have to write a 1500 word essay and my topic is tennis, the essay has to be quite interesting and have a couple of arguments.

E.g i think im going to discuss the prize money between men and women and why in some comps they get different prize money.

Anyone else have any other ideas that fits into that kinda criteria.

Sorry if this isnt clear, its hard to explain.

Anything will do :)

lol i like your idea, yeah he has fallen quite a bit but not enough to actually compare i dont think, after all he still won a grand slam.

what are the most talked about things in tennis today? excluding the players?

maybe you could tie this into the economy right now, and how prices will rise up (sorry taking this from Tennis World), sorry i cant help more, brains malfunctioning...

Edit: The rigors of tennis, and what happens when your injured, ways to treat the injury... theres alot of debate going around there, hope it helps!

"Should there be a longer off-season?"

You could talk about injuries, Nadal and Del Potro's weak year-end finishes after playing so well in '08, etc. You could also tie that in with "should GS men's matches continue to be best of 5 sets?" Then you could go on and say whether men should be paid more because of this...

Just throwing out some ideas.

Thanks for all your ideas so far.

I like the idea of a longer off season .. :)

Try not to be player specific, i can use examples but i cant talk about the same players throughout the essay.

Hmmm maybe i could do the rise and fall of Roger, i'll have a word with my teacher. Although im thinking of doing it on Lleyton if its possible.

Personally, I'd like to read a paper about the "Young Turks of Tennis" (current 20-somethings) and how they usually start out when they're 4, 5, 6 years old. And how it's usually a family member who guides/forces, encourages them to work, work, work through their childhood, tweens and teens.

Question: Is the adult taking advantage of the child, (meal ticket)?
Or is it the child who ultimately benefits most?

Lots of examples to choose from.
Age (*) in 2008:
* 19 -- Kei Nishikori (JPN)
* 20 -- Juan Martin Del Potro (ARG)
* 20 -- Marin Cilic (CRO
* 20 -- Ernests Gulbis (LAT)
* 21 -- Novak Djokovic (SRB)
* 21 -- Andy Murray (GBR)
* 21 -- Sam Querrey (USA)

Obviously, it will be most fun for you if you research players who interest you.

I like the idea of prize money of men and woman. Refer back to the fact that the men have to play 5 set matches in Grand Slams as compared to the Women's 3 set matches.

Another topic could be how the financial crisis may affect players of the sport (and also players of a different sport)

Or for something simple, say how Pete Sampras' results were more impressive due to the great players he had to play, in comparison to the one demensional players Fed had to play

Technological advances in tennis racquets.

Yup. Equipment changes. You should be able to drone for 1500 words about racket and string technology and how that's changed the game.

But your first instinct sounds fine, the prize money topic. Go for it.

So, are they always paid the same in ATP and WTA where it's best of 3 for all?

Plus I wonder what portion of the total number of matches played in a year are in Grand Slams? And further, what percentage of those matches go to 5 sets? or even 4 sets.

Plus in doubles they all play the same amount.

And do all Grand Slams pay women and men the same?

In other words: How big of an issue is it, really?

The winner of a master series (man) : $400 000
The winner of a tier 1 (woman) : around $197 000

Only two times a woman has won more money than a man in a year : Martina Navratilova in 1984 and Kim Clijsters in 2003.

Mats Wilander won $252 499 for his title at the US Open in 1988
Patrick Rafter won $700 000 in 1998
And this year Roger won $1 500 000.

Again in 2003, Kim Clijsters past the $4 000 000 (the first time for a woman)
In 2007, Justine Henin past the $5 000 000 (the first time for a woman)
In 1997, Pete Sampras won more than $6 000 000 and an half and he held the record until 2006 when Roger won more than $8 000 000.

You can talk about the players who play futures and challengers and how hard it is for them $$$.
