What Changes Would You Make To ESPN's Tennis On-Air Personnel

My complaints about the commentators are not so much personality dislikes, but what I dislike is when they fill every second with prattle and yap through the points. Also, it annoys me when they act like they are inside the minds of the players and know what they are thinking etc.

And, I know I've posted this before, but regarding Mary Carillo (an unabashed fan of Stefan Edberg): In 1996 (his farewell tour year), I sent her an Edberg t-shirt that I designed and printed in our family screen printing shop. She not only sent me a very sweet handwritten thank-you note, but she actually made me a postcard out of a photo she had taken of Stefan. That was very cool and I appreciate her taking the time to add that personal touch. I'd be happy to see her back on ESPN.

Keep list:

Carillo (she's actually tells it as it is and is blunt)
Cahill
BG
Goodall/Koenig
I'm shocked it took me so long to find someone defend Carillo. She really does tell it like it is and has a hilarious sense of humor e.g. "Gilles Simon looks so slight a gust of wind might knock him down" bahahaha & the whole badminton rant.

Let's also not forget she was one of the very, very few high-level personalities that didn't publicly toe the line with Serena after her blow up at last year's USO, which she deserves mad props for.

I'm a Carillo fan.

Disclaimer: No one cares about my opinion and these people are all super lucky to watch and talk about tennis for a career so power to them, but here it goes:

Chris McKendry- She's fine, she seems super nice, but kind of bland.
Chrissie Evert- She's gotten better since she debuted at the '09 open (I think) but there's something about her style that grates on me.
Pam Shriver- Super snarky
Mary Jo Fernandez- Very professional and she can be technical. She's good.
Rennae Stubbs- She's fine, but seems stuck on the B-team. I can take her or leave her.
Chris Fowler- I really like him. Seems like a real pro and a cool dude. Plus, he calls two of my favorite sports to watch. He's got a good Instagram and gives behind-the-scenes updates at the tournaments.
John McEnroe- He gets worse and worse every year. He can't string a complete sentence together. He rambles on, interjects randomly, and can be downright rude sometimes.
Patrick McEnroe- He can't pronounce Nadal's last name. Please tell me I'm not the only one who notices how he pronounces the last syllable like the name Al. But he's fine I guess.
Darren Cahill- Ultimate pro and great insight.
Brad Gilbert- The shtick wears thin sometimes but he's got a great feel for the game.
Cliff Drysdale- I think back to decades of watching Wimbledon with him. He's a gem, but not quite where he used to be.
Jason Goodall- I've liked him the more I've seen his personality. Can be a little uptight, but I go way back to listening to him on the world feed with Robbie Koenig.

Honorable Mentions:
Tom Rinaldi- Seems like a nice guy but can seem like he's trying too hard sometimes. His interviewing questions are awful and during his play-by-play he just takes the worst parts of each of his colleagues, i.e. "The DROPPA" for a drop shot or "One set to the good" or something like that.
Carillo- Not ESPN, but she was mentioned a lot: she's not that bad. People just like to pile on.
Alexandra Stevenson- Wow. Ditto to what people are saying. Very happy that ESPN is trying to give people different opportunities, but what a double fault of a trial run.

Might update if more names come to mind.

Need more of Taylor Dent, James Blake, Robbie Koenig, Mattek Sands. Most of the commentators are simply horrible.

The Evert-Shriver-Austin trio needs to go. They are too old and constantly keep boosting each other.

Davenport should be there and also Prakash Amritraj.

And James Blake.

The one name that hasn't been mentioned is Patrick Mouratoglou. I'm not even sure if he's officially employed for ESPN, but he does a ton of work for them "in the studio."

Get ride of Chris evert, Jmac, mary. Just get some new blood. Get A-Rod and Mardy Fish in there to give it some spice

Okay, Tom Rinaldi has to go too. His first question to Nadal after interviewing Schwartzman was, ‘Last night your opponent was 6’6” and tonight 5’7”... how do you make that adjustment?’

Seriously, that’s your question? Never in my life have I ever looked at the height of my opponent and thought, woah better adjust my game for that. I tend to focus more on how they hit the ball and move around the court.
The way they hit the ball and move on court is built around how tall they are...

Bring in James Blake. Also, Cahill, Goodall, Koenig are great. McHenry's fine for host.

Upend everything else.

Just 86 Gilbert, Mary Jo, and Chris and I'm happy. I can tolerate anyone else.

Can't switch over to Tennis Ch. either....Navratilova's voice , Tracy etc could strip paint.

For me Evert is by far the worst commentator. Everything is about her and her career. She is also irresponsible as a commentator such as holding new talent to very high expectations despite still developing and really never brings facts or is misleading with some stats to support her opinions.

All of ESPN’s on air staff need to stop gushing over Serena.

Last night’s non-coverage of Andreescu’s on court interview was telling enough. Apparently the ES in ESPN stands for Everything Serena when it comes to tennis.

I think I'd pretty much fire everyone and start from scratch.
Even Cahill? He's pretty inoffensive and does a good job. He's about as unbiased as they come in his commentary, though he's been really critical and bitchy this tournament.

Maybe I've been watching tennis on TV for too long. I look forward to first week matches that I can stream on my laptop, and I hope and pray that they don't have commentators.

In general, I think there are way too many people in the studio and doing the play-by-play. And that's not just in tennis. I think that's every sport on TV. Way too many people talking, trying to be clever; too many "experts." During the course of a match, there might be one or two things said which provide some real insight. The rest is just chatter I can do without.

Fire them all !
Each time I find a web tennis link to watch that has no commentators I feel almost guilty.
Like I've died and gone to heaven. :)
It's such a pleasure to watch like that.

And you want to know the craziest part?
I understand the match completely.
The players' strategies, what they need to do to improve their game during the match etc. etc.
But then I guess, most spectators are stupid and need to be told what's happening on court. :)
And they love to have their concentration stolen from them as the commentators blabber during the serve and play.

The only time I enjoy listening to Rinaldi is when Goodall is giving him crap in commentary

BG is pretty funny, never thought much of him before...

Please put the McEnroe brothers out to pasture, they are way past their best by dates.
John is the worst (and I AM serious!).
The team that did this afternoon's match (Monfils/Berrettini) were better then last nights crew (D Cahill > J McEnroe (and yes Cliff seems like a nice man but...no mas no mas !
Yep the McEnroes need to go, especially Pat who didn't win anything.

If you could control ESPN's on-air tennis staff, who would you hire/fire/promote/demote?

Includes: Chris McKendry, Chrissie Evert, Pam Shriver, Mary Jo Fernandez, Rennae Stubbs, Chris Fowler, John McEnroe, Patrick McEnroe, Darren Cahill, Brad Gilbert, Cliff Drysdale, Jason Goodall, etc.
Fire Chris Evert and Chris Fowler

I prefer not to say that anyone get fired. That’s too harsh.

Gilbert was my least favorite player of all, but as a commentator he has grown on me.

Fowler for a football guy does an admirable job and shows he’s done his homework.

Evert has earned her place there but she spends too much time blowing smoke up Serena’s a**.

Just as in their playing days Fernandez is a very poor mans Evert. Not kind of me, but I’m not sure she adds much on TV. She should look into coaching.

Contrary to the comments here I enjoyed Stevenson’s contribution. Perhaps it was great to hear from her again and I really enjoyed her as a player but I thought she brought something good to the broadcast.

Shriver has improved since she belittled Wickmayer years ago.

Chris Fowler is pretty annoying commentary. He is always got to say something. Let us watch the tennis !
Also, in love with Rafa and Fed which is fine but we don’t need anything but your unbiased commentary
