What college could this guy possibly play in?

Looking through some older recruiting videos, I found this one. I don't really know what to say. It's just... bad. His footwork is terrible to say the least, and his form seems to be all wrong.

This prompts the question, is college tennis dropping down in terms of skill? I noticed that Brandon Holt was immediately put at line #1 singles for USC as a FRESHMAN, and I also see that Evan Zhu has instantly been put into UCLA's team as a freshman as well. And their line 1 is Martin Redlicki.

So is the level of competition in college tennis decreasing? Or am I just confused because it's 7am and I've gotten 2 hours of sleep. Sooner or later, I think a guy like this would be recruited by some schools, esp if they're putting his video up.

I don't think he's that bad, there are lots of D3 schools that would take a guy like that, he didn't miss much.

I'd agree that there are plenty of D3 schools that would take someone like that.

wait, you are complaining about Evan Zhu, the very same player that plays doubles with Redlicki and went 21-5 in 2016-17 season? Well, you are not easily impressed apparently....

The name is Ethan Wu, not Evan Zhu.

This guy was apparently a 1-star recruit on tennisrecruiting.net who posted a YouTube video hoping to get college interest. From that, you conclude that college tennis is going downhill?

I am not sure what your reference to Evan Zhu means. Are you confusing Evan Zhu of UCLA with Ethan Wu, whose YouTube video you linked to?

On the other hand, there are plenty of D3 programs where he would not be good enough to play on the women's team. He is rated a 5 on Universal Tennis.

Who are you referring to? The OP complained that 'Evan Zhu' has been playing on UCLA team as a freshman - and that is correct, at least according to UCLA site the name of the player on the roster is indeed Evan. I just made a comment that it is a bit silly to complained about Evan playing as a freshman given the fact he did quite alright last season.

'Ethan' is apparently the name of the player OP posted the video of - which is really, I assume, not related to Evan.

I played for an unranked D3 school, albeit one that made NCAAs. He wouldn't make our team.

It's completely unrelated, I just found it interesting that Evan Zhu is playing as a freshman for UCLA. I'm more surprised about Holt being line 1 as a freshman lol.

I see people are saying he can make D3 schools, and I see others say he wouldn't make a D3 team. If he can't make D3, do you think he could make NAIA or Junior College teams?

Another question, why is this video posted March 7th, 2017, when he's a class of 17? Seems a bit late doesn't it?

I don't disagree with that, but the OP seems to imply that there are no college teams on any level that would take a guy of this level and that's simply untrue.

I don't know about all of NAIA, but the teams I've seen are pretty solid. I'm sure there are plenty of bottom-feeder schools in all divisions where he could play though.

There's no way 'Ethan Wu' player who has 5 UTR is the same 'Ethan Wu' player OP posted the video of. There are multiple players with the name Ethan Wu on UTR, you just took the first player with that name that comes up on UTR.

The Ethan Wu in the video is not bad at all. It does not look like he cares much on that video (which is somewhat surprising if he wanted it to be 'recruiting video') - but he has the serve, footwork, loose arm, not bad at all.

Now, asking a very generic question if he would make D1 or D3 tennis team is like asking: is $20,000 enough to buy a car. Well, depends on the car.

I saw his REAL UTR, and he's unrated. He played multiple D2-3 players and had close, 3 setters against them.
