What did Federer Achieve in 2013

I think we can all agree that Federer's 2013 was absolute trash.

However, I think he did have some noteworthy achievements:

In reaching the Australian Open and French Open quarterfinals, he extended his consecutive Grand Slam quarterfinal streak to 36.

He set the record for most Grand Slam match wins on hard courts.

He tied the record for most consecutive Grand Slam appearances.

He tied John McEnroe for third most singles titles in history. He tied Jimmy Connors for the second longest streak of winning at least one title in a season.

It's trash for Federer's standards but Federer is 32, a ton of mileage on his clock and was battling a back issue.

His fans expect too much of him, rightly so after everything he's done but he is not the mid 20's consistent juggernaut who makes top players look like daults anymore.

LOL!
And he can continue with that list for consecutive GS appearances till age 40. Impressive, no?

Yes, he did tie Jimmy Connors, but impressive is that he won ONE title only to match it! :)

Such achievements definitely warrant a NEW thread!

Federer is still the most popular abd beloved tennis player in the world, win or lose. That's a remarkable achievement.

Also, hey there was a new book written about him this year called Facing Federer which is pretty good.

Increased grass title record

10 semis in a row at Aus

May stay on track to equal Agassi's 13 WTF participations. (12 if he qualifies this year)

Agreed with this. It's like people expect him to stay #1 until he is 35 or so. It's simply not realistic. Remember that he was still about the 8th, 9th best player in the world this year, grabbed a title and a deep run at the AO. Nothing to sneeze at for most players, period, let alone a 32-yr old player.
Sure, it was pretty crappy compared to his previous years, but hey, at some point that might happen once a player ages. I do think he has enough left in him to have one more good-great year though :)

Nothing to be proud about. There's nothing special about winning one title a year. Just because Fed did this longer than anyone doesn't mean he's better because of that.
Lets stop calling every little thing a record, it makes the real records look bad.

900 career wins, he's on about 917 now..just a few behind Guillermo Vilas.

His 1000th career win would be so cool! Wonder if the tournament will celebrate it by bringing him a cake after the math. 1000 wins is awesome, must feel great for Federer. It's pretty meaningless in itself if you look at it as just another win but just the realization that he's been doing this for so long and has actually won 1000 matches on the ATP circuit must make him a little emotional.

1000th win will happen in 2016

yeh lol..I was thinking that, a big cake with ONE THOUSAND CANDLES on it. :)

we're gonna need a bigger cake.

Too true. It seems that every few days someone discovers a new "record" that Fed has.

Something like 46 consecutive round-of-16 wins at slams.

(And I like Fed.)

Correct. Something, ******* fails to do every year.
Finally, you got it this time mate.

Murray, Nadal, Tsonga, Cilic, Troicki, Monfils, ...all these guys missed a grand slam this year, why this permanent obsession about Nadal ? Is he haunting your dreams or what ? :D

Not much. He's still in top 10 and he still has 1 tournament left to do something special. The good news for him is that the one left is one of his favorite events if not his favorite one.

No one misses with punctuality of *******. That is rare.
******* does not haunt me. It is Roger and ******* - both are haunting you actually. I am trying to help all the massage girls here.

Or you could have just said, you know have no idea how hard it is to stay fit at the highest level, especially when you've gone deep in almost all of the Slams (part of the streak).

Another swiss cow. :)

Making a fair assessment or Roger's season, he's had quite a disappointing year by his own standards. I think that everyone is so used to seeing him going deep into tournaments, that the few early losses to players he should/would be beating easily under normal circumstances pretty much shocked anyone.

However, at 32 years of age, with a bad back and a lackluster season, Roger is still well inside the top 10, gave himself a very good chance of winning against Nadal in Cincinnati and Djokovic in Paris, both of those players are in they're prime and pretty much the most 2 dominant players this season.

Let's face it, RF ain't getting any younger, but raw talent just doesn't disappear like that. In the past couple of weeks, he's showing signs that he's still got some more mileage left in the tank. He's slowly getting his confidence back and that will help him in 2014. He also mentioned that he will work on his fitness during the off season, which should help his back as well.

Overall, 2013 has been a forgettable year for Roger, but I definitely think that he will bounce back to his usual level in 2014 and go back inside the top 4.
