My last accident was in 1981 or 1982.

Why can't people live close to work?

Let's say that houses run $600K where you work and you make $60K/year. Or maybe you want a decent school district for your kids but the city where you work has awful schools. Or your wife wants to live close to her family so that she can get help taking care of the kids. Or maybe the city where they work would make for a lousy place to live.

Or you work as a consultant and have to drive or fly to clients' offices.

There are obviously huge numbers of people that spend a lot of time commuting. They wouldn't if they had the choice whether to do so. So it's pretty obvious that there are some rather extreme pressures out there to do so.

I have a 20 minute commute but used to have 40 minute commutes. During that commute, I plan my day, work on problems in my head, enjoy some music or keep up on the news. I have a coworker that has a 40 minute commute. He moved a year ago from a five minute commute because his kids weren't getting a very good education where he was living and a very good district at a price that he could afford was 40 minutes away. He buys college course type materials that he listens to on the way to and from work.

the thing was i graduated from the #1 school in the tri-state region LOL so if i were to have kids... i'd love to send them to the same school =]
so i dunno... lol... when will i ever have kids? i'd not mind getting married immediately out of college but the thing is who cares about the job... money is only a number... if im desperate i can always print my own money

I know they dont compare to Honda's and Toyota's but.....

how much u get the car for?

If you have a lot of worries on it, see if you can find a forum for your model care or at least the make. When I drove Audis, I was on a mailing list for Audis and it was invaluable for getting an idea of what failed and when along with getting the options to fix problems. Back then, Audi was an enthusiast car company. Today it's more corporate.

Audi was near dead when it was 'an enthusiast' car company...

For some reason, younger folks think that it grows on trees. Perhaps it does. There have been so many caught up in the Home ATM, subprime loans and house flipping that one might think that it's easy to get something for nothing.

I grew up in a good district too but couldn't afford to live there. They didn't have the crazy subprime loans back then and that was good. The system wouldn't let you hang yourself.

Financial concerns dealt with when young make passage through life easier as small decisions made in youth have a way of exponentially compounding through adult life. Unless you were born with a silver spoon. Even then, prudent financial management can help avoid squandering old money.

The reasons for Audi's problems were many:

- Unintended acceleration
- Great whiz-bang technology that wasn't maintainable
- Great whiz-bang technology prone to failure
- Legendary electrical problems
- Legendary hydraulic system problems so that your power steering and power brakes could both fail at the same time
- Low volume production cars implying huge costs for replacement parts
- Weak service education - trying to find qualified mechanics was tough
- Dealer network problems

The 60-minutes unintended accelerations was probably the biggest blow to the carmaker's reputation and it took a long, long time to recover from that. They started going upscale in the mid 1990s and garnered more sales, especially in the colder climates. But they still had the same quality problems in the 1990s.

VW needed a luxury arm anyways and their only real option was Audi. It appears to have worked out well financially well for VW.

I don't think that I'll ever buy a European car again. The Japanese automakers have such a quality advantage over the Europeans that it isn't funny. And it isn't just in the physical construction of their vehicles. It's also in the processes and procedures that they put into place for vehicle maintenance and maintainability engineering.

yea the thing that gets me is why the other nations cant duplicate it. ihave read case studies where Ford and GM both sent engineers to Japan plants just to study and observe how they were doing it, and yet despite agreeing and rezliaing Japan is much superior, they are still not duplicating the process to improve quality...i guess the cost of overhaul throughout would just be too costly....but still we are talking cars here. you should be able to justofy that to the board of directors. stupid american car companies lol

What's funny is that the Japanese originally came to the US to find out how they could improve quality. And Deming went over there and explained it to them.

I think that you need to have a long-term focus on gradually building up a business. It happens all the time in the US with small businesses. But the
big companies are focused on the short term and the near-term rewards
for management. So putting into place long-term investments can be hard
to justify when your manager is looking to cash in his next round of stock
options that are vesting.

the dials are all cheap plastic from the regular brand (honda, nissan toyota etc.)
the turn signal lever from a $40,000 acura is the same as from a civic...

a bmw or mercedes on the other hand...

Good. I can't speak for the rest of the world, but here in Australia, of the japanese cars, Mitsu's 'cope' with high miles the very worst of the Japanese cars. I know some of the engines are locally made here, may be the problem, but yeah, on the whole, the cope the worst. Toyota and Subaru are much more famous for their ability to clock up the miles....

Dials and turn signal levers, that's where the rubber hits the road, that's what people really care about. NOT.

Please! For a start, Lexus often do unique dial-clusters (a major 'oooohhhh' factor for the IS were the funky dials), and either way....who cares? Only pretentious people who care more about silly aesthetics than almost anything else (including overall safety, design, engineering, longevity, price, etc etc etc).

Final thought: weight is normally a negative in cars (hence the true respect manufacturers like Lotus receive). The more they weigh, the worse they handle. This especially applies to weight that is further from balance & rotation axis, hence the reason some cars go for CF roofs - remove weight from the point furthest from the axis between the wheels. I'm quite happy knowing the dials and turn-levers are plastic in most Japanese cars!

You missed my (subtle) point about weight. Maybe re-read or re-comprehend my last post....

Completely unrelated to my point. Completely. I appreciate engineering and innovation, especially as it pertains to safety. I don't appreciate a 'weighty indicator stalk' for the sake of it, and I could care less what other vehicles that indicator stalk is used in.

if u care about clocking up miles and mpg's then u should just be looking for retirement and wait for urself to die

Or perhaps you're someone who would prefer a reliable car that will last a long time, so you could spend your money elsewhere.

cars the way i put it... is a luxury to life... luxuries shouldnt last long, luxuries should be enjoyable, luxuries need to be nice, flashy, stimulate senses...

You're really lacking in some serious values, and you're a sucker for the modern generation. By definition, a luxury good in many categories should last for a long time, it should be higher quality than a standard good.

its like women buying purses... it cost like $1000 for a LV bag, it'll last a season ... but who cares... its a luxury...

You are so out of touch with reality it's just scary.

Do you live your life in a hip-hop video (and are somehow delusional to the point you think most people do?) My god. Get out in the real world. Go for a hike in the bush for a weekend. Walk somewhere. Ride a bike. Actually live, and learn the value of life instead of the price of something that someone decides to rip you off with!

Quality is part of the engineering process. Serviceability
is a part of the engineering process. Maintainability is
part of the engineering process. Now companies like Audi
and BMW might not have a problem with charging $300 each
for rear bushings or eight hundred dollars for a windshield
wiper motor but the average person wouldn't view this as
a favorable cost of ownership issue.

Audi did market their cars based on cost of ownership in
the past. But against other German cars.

Japan's GDP for 2006 was $4.9 trillion. Germany's was $2.89
trillion. Germany has far more than Japan in terms of natural
resources.

Japan has 55% more people but 69% higher GDP. And what's the
number one car company in the world now? BMW? Volkswagen?
Daimler-Chrysler? Which car companies have the highest growth
rates?

> if u care about clocking up miles and mpg's then u should just be
> looking for retirement and wait for urself to die

Why look for retirement? Life is to be lived and enjoyed. But one need
not waste the resources of the planet to do so. Or burden others with
our personal excessive energy use.

> cars the way i put it... is a luxury to life... luxuries shouldnt last

The ultimate luxury is time. Not things. You can always get more things.
You can't get more time.

> its like women buying purses... it cost like $1000 for a LV bag, it'll

I offered my new wife a $1,000 bag shortly after we got married. Coach
I think. She turned me down. That was back in the 1980s when a thousand
dollars was worth a little.

Actually, the first airbag goes to GM. They put them in select Buicks, Olds, and I believe Chevy models as well back in the early 70s. Adaptive cruise, it doesn't go to the Germans, but I cannot off the top of my head remember who did. ABS, that actually goes to the British in the form of the Dunlop Maxaret or something like that they called it, part of the Ferguson system, which was applied to Jenson Interceptors, and even at least one early 70s Ford Mustang. It was four wheel drive and 4 wheel abs disc brakes.

One other point of interest is that the Germans and the Japanese both build

I do not know the quality comparisons on Mercedes and BMW production in the States vs Germany but I think that labor costs are far lower in the US than in Germany.

That's one other thing that's played out in the global car game. Asia is willing to keep its currency weak which is a plus for cars built in Japan. Europe's currency is smoking hot which means that anything shipped across the Atlantic gets jacked up.

I know quite a few people with B*** (X5s and M3s). To a lot of these people, it's just a vehicle that they've bought as their regular cars. Though they don't drive the M3s in the winter. These people have major accomplishments in their lives (as being the best in the world at what they do) and they've received the benefits for their hard work over the years. One of them did complain to me about a broken X5 windshield wiper motor that cost him $800 to fix and some other problems with the interior that he didn't expect on this class of vehicle.

I've driven some of DC's cars and the only cars worthy of mention are the newere 300C's, esp with the Hemi and SRT8 engine package and an older Viper GTS which was a brute to drive. Personally, I'm glad Daimler is dumping Chrysler. Lets see what the new company has in store for Chrsyler.
