What do you all think of Cameron Norrie?

It's strange that here in Britain the media doesn't really care about Norrie even though he's been ranked as high as 8th last year. The guy doesn't have the most aesthetically pleasing shots but it's his drive and fight which gets him through matches. He's not going to beat the very best consistently but he'll be there playing against them, making the latter stages of tournaments. I like the fact Cam Norrie has maximised every skill he has.

He has finalitis aka he usually loses in finals of tournaments yet usually he plays players who are better than him. In 2023 so far he's in his 3rd ATP final. If you look at how many top 10 players he beats per season it isn't a good ratio to be honest, so to me he's like a gatekeeper between the top players and the rest.

The way he plays the game, his forehand takeback and backhand look more suited to Clay strangely enough.

Norrie is in my top 5. I like his unconventional strokes, and how he hold his emotion well on court. Great player to watch live.

Good litmus test of whether you’re a mug or not. If you’re good you’ll destroy his disgusting eyesore of strokes, if you have flaws though his relentless grinding and massive spin variations on both wings will frustrate you.

I find him interesting to watch despite being ugly. His matches always get very tactical and his opponents have to do a lot of thinking.

He's not very interesting to watch plus his backhand literally hurts the eyes.

Also he's from about 17 different countries so I doubt anyone sees him as a true Brit.

He probably gets the Rusedski treatment, i.e. the idea that he's not a "real Brit".

Even Murray was just "the Scotsman" when he lost, and Henman was "gutless" when he lost.

Always makes me laugh that "Scotsman" is treated as though they are some kind of foreigner in the gutter press! :p

He's a good player and has fighting spirit but can't seem to bring it against the very best eg. Alcaraz and has embarrassing losses against guys he should be routining eg. getting beaten by Old Man Gasquet in the final of Auckland.

I am IMPRESSED! He has now made it to 2 clay court finals - his worst surface. Norrie continues to improve. He outlasts opponents in long baseline rallies. His flat backhand is working great including his down-the-line shots. Is he a contender at this year's French Open? I have to say YES!

I will repost what I've said about Norrie in a different thread earlier this year:

Norrie's game is very basic, but that's what is good about it.

I'll admit that I never thought much of his talent watching him play on TV. His strokes look kind of ugly. However, I watched several of his matches up close in person in Indian Wells the year he won the title there (the special October edition in 2021). From that, I came away with an appreciation of what he can do.

Norrie's forehand is very loopy and he hits a heavy spinning ball on that side. This contrasts well with his extremely compact and flat backhand that stays low and skids through the court. He's also in tremendous shape and gets to way more balls that you'd expect, and he doesn't make too many silly errors. Add in the fact that he's left handed, and as a result, I don't think opponents enjoy playing against him. So, although his game is very basic for a pro, I respect that he is maximizing his abilities and carving out a very respectable career. He's basically a journeyman that has figured out how to overachieve using the best of the tools he has been given.

I find him a chore to watch. The only thing I enjoy is his serve+1 when he goes DTL with his forehand. He plays with such little margin on that shot that it's always impressive when it lands in.

I'm guessing he won't actually be too popular in Scotland after he made remarks about his dad's "filthy Scottish accent". ;)

He has a weird kiwi accent.
His last name is from a children's programme called Duggee.

He thinks he "feels" British.

Why do you think the British media is not going gaga over him?

Let's face it. He's not Roger Federer on court. His shots are pretty ugly. He's done well and I think he knows his limitations as a player.

Solid .I appreciate effort &dedication Although I’m big lover of textbook tennis technique sometimes I don’t mind unorthodox even irregular.Used to enjoy a lot F.Mayer style &strokes Norrie game hits different for some reason .I’m trying (when I have to ..) without much success for now.

Played college tennis in the USA. Let's call him Mr. Continental

I'm not a fan but I thought he looked really good this week. Even at that he probably would have lost in straight sets today had Alcaraz not suffered the leg injury.

And on the other hand, we get matches like the one today

Good player who has made the most of the tools he has and the opportunities presented to him in this era

Norrie isn't gonna do anything of note. (I mean he almost blew a match to a guy that couldn't even run LOL) . I would be more worried about Carlos. Another week, another injury. You can't keep going like that
