What do you play tennis for?

What is your goal everytime you go out and play? is it just having a good time? win? meet people regardless of the score? or improving?

for me... i think its not good... but I've gone from enjoying tennis to just focusing on getting better. I dont even want to play if I dont think I will improve. I feel like I want to get better everytime I play, which I am doing i think, but now i feel like Im not getting better fast enough. A lot of time I just want to go out and play, not because I really want to play, but because I want to get better for my highschool season and tournaments and the future. its like a never achieving goal... is this healthy?

Well I started playing about 10 years ago to meet girls. The first girl I ran into on the courts is actually my wife of 6 years. Right now I play to keep in shape and to have fun.

My main goal is to have a good time. Improvement will come along with having a good time, and so will winning; at least that's my theory about it. Meeting new people is just a perk, or in some cases not really so LOL.

I just enjoy playing it plus I think tennis is one of the most skillful sports. Of course making money would be a nice goal.

Wow! That's romantic! Soap operas should inspire your story to make it nice.

That's actually, super cute. I wish I had a cute story.

Are you saying that the 7 year itch is just around the corner? ;)

I started playing tennis again as a fun way for my girlfriend and I to keep in shape and get tanned. I try to stick to that, but I'm starting to be more and more driven to improve. I was afraid this was gonna happen because the more I improve, the more I'm going to want to play with more challenging partners. I just need to remember to chill out every now and then. :D

To beat the flying hell out of everyone, and attempt to be the best in the world one day...

Is there any other reason? :D

Multiple things - first of all - it's fun just to play! The "journey" when you are constantly trying to learn more and more/working to improve your shots is also very fun and interesting! A third reason is to get a good workout...

It is a good exercise, it's fun, you meet different people, you use your brain and it's good gentleman's sport. What more can I say, it's a great sport.

I play only to peg my opponents. So satisfying.

No, I play to improve aswell. If I'm not going forward then I'm not happy playing. Thank God I have a lot to learn still, otherwise if I thought that I couldn't get any better I'd just quit.

tennis gives me something to do and keeps me in good shape. its a great thing to do with my friends. i can play with really good players and i can play with beginners. its all still fun!

I get satisfaction out of improving but playing matches for fun is good too. You can have fun and improve, just depends on how competetive you are.

Girls!

Sike, anyways, the main reason why I play tennis.... I have no clue honestly. It's something I really love, with all my heart. If I go a day without tennis, or stop playing tennis for awhile -- I'll feel under-the-weather. Sometimes, I'll sit at home with a remote controller in my hand just close my eyes and imagine playing tennis. Just practicing my strokes. I use to do this a lot, it rains quite a bit here in Washington.

That's how I got real consistent and real good on my strokes. I can probably close my eyes right on the bounce and imagine it all in my mind and hit the tennis ball perfectly.

It's just this fire that burns in me, on playing. I don't know why I play, but I enjoy it a lot. It feels satisfying. Like it makes my day complete. If it were up to me, I'd spend like 12-14 hours a day playing tennis or until I got sleepy.

Pretty much the same as everyone else. Good exercise, social aspects, and the desire to improve. And a clean winner struck perfectly is an addictive feeling for me.

I play tennis because I love the sport. Been playing for over 20 years, and still having fun more than ever :)

i play because i love it to. now, im becoming more focused then ever now. my number one priority for playing tennis is to beat everyone at my school. i hate my coach too, and that is a giant motivational part too. he sticks lower level, younger players on varsity while i (a junior for freakin Christ sakes...) am stuck in JV class.

this is my total motivation from him: he points at me during tryouts (without even looking at us play) and tells me in exact words "Definitely JV". what the hell does definitely mean? is that some sort of consellation? right now, i just want to drop kick him in the face with 10 lb boots. many of my peers think i should be in the varsity class now because they have seen me playing and see how the others play and think i am surely better.

i have been practicing for 3/4+ hours a day and what do i get? DEFINITELY JV. thats my motivation to play tennis. i also have fun and always want to improve, but not so much as to completely block out the fun part.

I play becuase I love the feeling of satisfaction after you play an awesome match and win against somebody that you never thought you could beat.

Yeah, that's what I'm talkin 'bout.

I'd like to say that I play for fun, but it's just not true. I play to get better, and to get as good as I possibly can. I only really enjoy it when I'm kicking someone's ass, or I'm in a competative match and playing well. I love the feeling of nailing the ball where the other guy can't get it.

Perhaps even if I'm getting a kicking from a player who is just much better than me, but I'm playing better than I usually do or even learning how to handle the increase in quality, that's cool.

I start work next year and will only have time to play once or twice a week, with no time for fitness in between. I don't know if I'll carry on playing at all, because it'd be downhill all the way - I wouldn't be improving, I'd most likely be getting worse. It'll be hard, but I might just have to go out on top and take my retirement at 22. I'd rather try and forget that tennis exists than sit in my office all day long wishing I had more time to play. That'd kill me.

Another big reason I play is to vent my 'bronca' (Spanish-Argentine slang to denote anger, fury, hatred, resentment and bitter discontent).

And there's plenty bronca to go around, I can tell you...

i play because i love the feeling when you give it your best in a match you don't believe you can win, but end up winning. That, and because the result of a very very toned body, that could be in part to me working out a little bit.

Ahhhhhhhh... tennis!

Hello All,

I play it.. teach it.. coach it.. watch it. Wonderful sport. The best times are when I hit with my partners.. singles or doubles.. in a park.. play until we can't stand.. then grab some lunch and some cold ones! Miller TIME BabY!
