What does Blake need to do to beat Fed?

I think their last meeting was in Cincy 2007. I remembered Blake played poorly in the first set and lost the match. What does Blake need to do?

Here is my list:-

1) Show patience instead of trying to out hit Fed.
2) Hit to Fed's backhand.
3) Stop saying "Too Good".
4) Don't fall behind in the sets.
5) Ask Tipsy for tips.

be aggressive at all times. Go for the deep fast pace shots to the corners especially towards the backhand side and quit being such a wimp mentally.

Tactics has very little to do with it but tactically he needs to relize he can't hit a winner on every stroke, he needs to play a bit more spin and set up his points, I think he knows this though.....
other than that and most importantly he need to grow a pair and not be such a b***** to be on court with federer, if he continues to put Fed on a god like pedestal hes only playing for second place and no tactics can help him what so ever

Like Roddick does? Thats not how you beat Federer, you beat him by playing great defense and setting up your points, Andy can't play great defense so hes out of luck, James can play defense so he needs to play smart and do what he does well but smarter, he needs to hit a bit more spin and set up his points, he can't just expect to hit a winner from everywhere on the court every stroke, Nadal/Djoker play great defense but still pressure Federer, Blake has a game that can do this so he needs to find this blend of defense and pressure...good luck James

Pray that Fed is sick or injured otherwise he is going home.Blake along with Roddick is the best possible match-up for Federer,he couldn't have wished for an easier quartefinal opponent.

As Janko Tipsarevic said, to beat Federer, you have to believe that you can beat him. I don't know if Blake has that belief.

Do what Tipsarevic did and "try" to break Fed's backhand, hitting deep, penetrating shots. He's also got to have a solid set of mind like he did against Cilic. Its still going to be a stretch for him to beat Fed considering the fact that Blake is 0-7 against Fed lifetime.

Are we telling Blake to actually use tactics? He's the second most brain dead tennis player (tactically speaking) on tour, only behind Roddick.

Here are some things he needs to do:

1. Hit the ball hard but consitently.
2. Mix up the game
3. High percentage of first serves
4. Use his speed at his advantage
5. Play out of his mind.

Serve as well as he's ever served before.
Be ultra aggressive and attack the net way more than usual.
Hope his backhand is on fire.
Hope Federer is playing at less than 90%.

avoid buying a whip for fed to use

Blake loves being Fed's B itch

Well I agree on the no buying a whip part. But we all know andy roddick is RFed's lil' B itch to knock around the court. too bad our friend andy hasnt been able to even get to the quarters in many a recent slams.

James Blake probably needs to pull a tonya harding to stand a chance.

Blake looked okay against Federer in 2006 at the US Open. By okay I mean he stood a chance, and that was in his home town.

Good luck Blake.

I think he should go for broke, not that he ever has any other game plan.

a brain transplant would help.. Blake needs to play consistency. He just went for broke everytime he plays against Fed. Fed loves hard hitters so patience is the key.

It's easy to say than face it in reality. Fed balls are very heavy compare to the rest of the guys so chasing those down would be problems already.

Fed's balls are indeed heavy. His physician assures the press it's nothing serious. Mirka's been having too many late night "headaches".

Another armchair genius who knows exactly what the pros are thinking and what they should be doing instead.

Sorry, but brain dead players don't make it to the top 10. What looks like "brain dead" tennis to you is actually probably much more complicated.

Play like Agassi, a style that he just cannot play. He doesn't have the patience, or the ability to create angles consistently.

He'll go for low percentage crushing shots as usual, which means he'll blow Federer away in some points, but still end up losing the set 6-3 or 6-4.

I haven't even read this thread, but I sure hope someone has made a Nancy Kerrigan joke, as that's the only way Blake takes this.

It's not impossible for Blake to beat Fed with the way Roger's playing. I mean, don't get me wrong, Federer WILL win. But usually with these two Federer wins 99% of the time, but considering all facts I'd say it's only 91% certain this time.

Again, took your lips off Nadal's bum for just long enough to bash some Americans. You are as predictable as the topspin chimp you root for.

The only hope for Blake is for Federer to have a letdown and play VERY poorly while Blake himself consistently executes his high risk game.

But as far as matchups go, this is one that Federer loves. Blakes game plays right into Federer's hands. Feds in straight sets is my prediction.

1. Serve well
2. Keep his head up, even when he goes down in a set.
3. Use his speed to run down balls and get them back - but don't try to always hit winners from these positions.
4. Make his shots when he gets an opening.

I like Blake, but chances are slim against Fed. Fed just seems to eat up Blake's hard, flat ball and redirect his shot at impossible angles.

JT lost a 5-setter to Federer, then everything he said is true?

Volandri believed he was going to beat Federer last year? Don't think so. If you believe things that are not true, then you are delusional.

Blake got a chance if he is on top of his game, and Federer is off. His game doesn't match well against Federer's.

nothing much blake can do to beat federer... they are in different class... only thing that blake can do is to pray federer will play badly or not feeling well....
even that, might be not enough for blake to upset federer....

This is the best advice I've seen so far (not that he'd listen to any of us). Endless aggression's all well and good if the ball's going in, and if you're not playing Fed, who is able to redirect pace so perfectly.

That's an excellent summation which will lead to holds, some high percentage points, get into cross court backhand exchanges to elicit some weak balls, and of course hope that Federer isn't playing his best and can't go into overdrive the way he does in tie breaks.

One more thing others mentioned, he has to believe he can win and not let his head get in the way when he's down 2 sets to 1, or the match is over no matter what he does.
