What does it mean for Nadal if he is unable to win RG this year?

Its actually Seppuku, no idea where sapuku came from because 'sa' is not even in the word... せ(se)っ(tsu - create a brief hold in the word hence the double p in romaji) ぷ (pu) く (ku)

On topic, I think he will struggle a little more than he has so far this year but still the likely favourite. More matches where he has to play at least 3 sets and unlikely to get so many default wins in early rounds.
Correct, it’s seppuku, thanks. I was sure it couldn’t be sudoku. It’s very unlikely that somebody would commit suicide playing that game :D

It means it will only be the 3rd time* that he fails to win it since he started playing it.

It also means he will not do a complete claysweep this year (assuming he won't have already fallen down in Madrid and/or Rome).

Edit: It will be the 4th time.

The 4th actually. Also it would be a huge upset. At least, at this stage of clay season, no one has stepped up.

Means 11 will have to happen another year and he loses some points before the next tournament he plays this year.

Probably posting from the court between sets.

Since he first played RG in 2005, he has only failed to win it 3 times: 2009 (lost in 4th round to Söderling), 2015 (lost in quarter-final to Djokovic), 2016 (withdrew ahead of his 3rd round match against Granollers).
It'd be the 4th this year if he were to fail to win it this year.

Rafa won't lose at RG this year, but if he didn't win RG I will say this:

1. The slam race is 85% over
2. It will be extremely difficult for Rafa to go on and play the remaining tournaments this season
3. Carlos Moya will no longer be coaching and uncle Toni will come back
4. It will have meant that Novak is back and has beaten Rafa at RG to win his 13th slam and 2nd at RG
5. Federer will have a strong chance to 100% seal the slam race and finish the year ranked #1

I know, slim to nil and slim is packing his bags...

But on the off chance that he loses early for some reason other than injury, do we still like Nadal's chances to break the slam record? Is his confidence irreparably destroyed going into grass and hard court season to where he may not win any Grand Slams this year or going forward?

Can Nadal afford to lose RG this year under any circumstances?
It means he will never catch Federer in the slam count.

If Nadal doesn’t win RG this year, it means he will have transcended this mortal realm and attained a higher state of consciousness before he could do so.

Either that, or he’s been secretly working with Pepe Imaz.

The pertinent question is what it means for VB? (cf. Aus Open Men's final 2017). They needn't worry though, Nadal has it in the bag.

What if he gets the flu the morning before one of his matches or has food poisoning? He could twist an ankle, break a finger... so there's actually a 0.000002% chance of him losing at RG. Be realistic.

If he breaks one of his left hand fingers, 100 percent lose. Racquet will slip a lot.

He lost 2008 Rome because of Blisters. Twisted Ankle, he will lose 100% again.

Federer was tired chasing number 1 hence he lost the last 2 matches.

Potro was due a victory, he was very close in last few meetings.

The real reason was choking by federer and wrong shot selection at MPs..
Come on man, couldn't you hit just a 1st serve of 200+ kmph ??
Okay you didn't, so could not you hit a BHDTL instead of dropshot when delpo was moving forward to the net??...
And you have one of the best and accurate serves of all time, then why 2 DF in TB??

The real reason is, del potro is only one player who can make federer frustrated as he does reply to his aggressive game by even more aggression so that is the case..

And also, federer was not tired but he was not well prepared like last year's IW (he had very hard training blocks and practice beford IW17).
And that kokkinakis loss was actually a strategical loss as federer did not want to injure himself or burning out, also not to have much pressure and play with free mind in Grass season.

Yes he has maybe the best peak game and abilities ever then why did he lose all those matches I don't understand. He should be winning even when he is 50. If you are that good why lose?

I don't care what it means for Nadal but I know what it means for me - a 2 week drinking spree until Wimbledon.

And you love it :p
Imagine how epic watching the FO with some quality Gandalf is ;)

It would mean that the GOAT standard would remain winning 10 of the toughest slam to win.

Tiredness. He had long physical matches in QF, SF and final. Tennis is never over until last ball, in a long match the opponent break backs Federer always lose because of tiredness. Potro is the fitter of the 2 having an easy SF.

Any top players need to play their best for whole match to beat potro. Of course everyone dislike to play him. He rests for years to try beat a big gun then disappear again.

I dont think is choke because Federer has no energy any more. The match points he hoped potro to make an error which is not going to happen.

Federer is not a physical giant in the game, there are many times he needs to win quickly.

Rubbish, he wanted badly to keep that number 1 ranking. Hes just not as consistent anymore.
Expect a shock come Wimbledon too.
