What does Wawrinka do better than Almagro besides volley?

Stan won 6 out of a total of 7 encounters between the two that were played on clay, though - and if you watch (or...re-watch...) the highlights from their duels at the Copa Claro 12/13, for example, you'd surely come to see that one is just as good as the other when it comes to trading backhands.

Yes watching their matches and rallies from the baseline Wawrinka even pre prime had every bit as strong a backhand, indeed probably better, despite this being by far Almagro's outstanding and signature shot. Wawrinka had a MUCH better forehand (as I mentioned on another thread his forehand is probably the most underrated shot in tennis today) than Almagro, even then. And he moves better. So as a result dominated and won the vast majority of baseline rallies, the bread and butter of both guys games. This is an obvious troll thread, atleast I hope so.

No, Almagro is balanced off both wings, he has a huge forehand AND a huge backhand - just that people take more note of his backhand because it's a one-hander and one-handers are in modern tennis.

For my money, peak Almagro hits a bigger ball off both wings than peak Wawrinka - but Wawrinka maybe had a bit more variety. You can see it in how violent Almagro's groundstrokes look compared to how Wawrinka's groundstrokes look - and no, it isn't because Wawrinka gets more 'effortless power', it's because Wawrinka is actually swinging at the ball slower than Almagro, hence his ball has less on it.

You have man love for Almagro. Stan is clearly superior to Almagro. FACT - Stan has 3 Grand Slams, Almagro has 0. Stan has a 6-3 record against Almagro. Stan is currently ranked # 3 , Almagro is ranked # 48, Stan has won $26m , Almagro has only won $10m. Stan has won hard court and clay court tournaments, Almagro has only won tournaments on clay. Even when you are presented with overwhelming evidence in Wawrinka's favor, you attempt to rationalize that they are equals or Almagro is better. Case closed, over and out.

My genuine answer would be that Wawrinka has much more consistency of placement / depth, consistency in ball striking, better anticipation, better control of the pace of the point, better hitting off balance, just a far more controlled ball.

Almagro looks like he's just trying to run people off the court with power, and his shots are all over the place.

Wawrinka is incredibly energy efficient, mixes up his shots, forces opponents into bad spots, etc.

Almagro is just blasting around every point from what I'm watching. He is that big hitter you run into at the club and can't believe he's at your level until you actually play him and see how much he gives away.

I am pretty disappointed at the quality of replies you got. I think there is a reasonable discussion to be had about why big spin hitters lose, etc.

Wawrinka and Djoker are great at not giving anyone anything to attack. Almagro hits those type of spinny shots that ocassionally set up opponents to hit easy winners if he doesn't get enough of his body into them. Nadal does the same thing, but Nadal's defensive game can be exceptionally good to make up for it.
