What 2 things do these GOATS have in common? 1) They don't possess the best stats in their respective sports (e.g. most number of championships or titles), but 2) they made the greatest overall impact on the hearts and memories of their sport's followers.

Which tells me that the tennis GOAT will ultimately be judged on the same criteria.

You post as if those players are the undisputed GOATs of their respective sports. It’s debateable, especially , basketball, boxing, and soccer.

I think with GOAT discussions people don't distinguish between what dedicated fans will think, what casual fans will think and what the general public will think.

Of course fans on forums like this will discuss the minutiae of the statistics and at least pretend to base their conclusions on those. Casual fans will probably go by their own preferences and once the Big 3 are out of the way and there's no longer any emotional involvement may well go off slam count.

The general public, if they have any opinion at all, will go for Federer because he's the biggest name and has had a very effective GOAT marketing operation over the years. Often I think people who are very devoted fans don't realise how little tennis matters to the outside world these days. Other than during Wimbledon week I never hear it talked about at work. I doubt any of my colleagues would know that Novak is on a potential four-in-a-row for instance. Roger's 100th got a tiny little paragraph in the Sunday paper in my house - lost among 20 pages devoted to football (soccer)

People never fail to speak (often incorrectly) about "Fed fans," thus generalizing millions of people.

The moment another player passes Fed's slam mark, he's the GOAT in my book and will be considered to be my most tennis afficionados. Many other Fed fans will agree.

Djokovic would probably be over Federer with even the same number of slams. Most of his stats would be superior at that point- many more Masters, probably atleast equal WTF, more time at #1 (he is almost certain to pass Federer there as it is, if he reaches 20 or more slams he will probably dwarf him in this stat). He wouldnt have to pass Federer in slams, he would just have to reach him and he would already be ahead.

Laver and Gonzales are the mens GOATs anyway though.

Sadly as more time passes more delusional people will believe Messi and Ronaldo are above Pele and Maradonna which is a joke. Messi I could atleast half stomach, Ronaldo is the most overhyped joke in the history of the sport. If he looked like Lleyton Hewitt nobody would be talking about him in those terms.
